Do you have a question about the SystemAir Fantech Rn Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Fantech Rn Series Inline Radon Fans are designed for radon mitigation, offering a reliable solution for improving indoor air quality. These fans are specifically engineered to be used with 3" and 4" Schedule 40 PVC pipe, utilizing appropriate LDVI™ couplings for secure installation.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Rn Series fans is to extract radon gas from beneath a building and vent it safely to the outdoors. This process, known as radon mitigation, helps reduce the concentration of radon indoors, thereby minimizing health risks associated with prolonged exposure to this radioactive gas. The fans are designed for continuous operation, creating a negative pressure field under the building's slab to draw radon-laden air through the piping system and exhaust it outside.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides detailed dimensions for three models: Rn1, Rn2, and Rn3.

  • Rn1 and Rn2:
    • A: 4 15/32 inches (114 mm)
    • B: 10 inches (254 mm)
    • C: 1 1/4 inches (32 mm)
    • D: 9 1/4 inches (235 mm)
  • Rn3:
    • A: 5 7/8 inches (149 mm)
    • B: 11 1/2 inches (292 mm)
    • C: 1 1/4 inches (32 mm)
    • D: 9 1/4 inches (235 mm)

These dimensions are crucial for planning the installation and ensuring compatibility with existing or new piping systems.

The fans are permanently connected appliances featuring a reinforced polymeric construction. This non-conductive design acts as a "Double Insulated" protective system, complying with UL 1097 standards for electrical equipment. This double insulation eliminates the need for a grounding conductor, simplifying electrical installation while maintaining safety. All Fantech radon fans are tested and reviewed by Underwriter Laboratories and are deemed suitable for outdoor use, adhering to UL 507 standards for safety-electric fans.

The wiring diagram illustrates a typical three-wire connection: Load (Black), Neutral (White), and Ground (Brown). However, due to the double-insulated construction, the ground wire provides an additional safety path in case of an accidental electrical short or discharge of metal components, but it is not strictly required for the fan's operation as it is for single-insulated devices. The motor leads are Blue, Black, and Brown, connecting to the N (White), L (Black), and Capacitor, respectively, for the supply voltage.

Usage Features:

  • Radon Mitigation Specific: These fans are exclusively designed for radon mitigation purposes. It is explicitly stated that they MUST NOT be used to exhaust hazardous or explosive materials and vapors.
  • Outdoor Installation: The fans are suitable for outdoor use, which is a common requirement for radon mitigation systems to vent gases away from living spaces.
  • Ducting Recommendations: For optimal performance, the manual emphasizes using the shortest, straightest duct routing possible. Installing the fan with smaller ducts than recommended should be avoided, as this can negatively impact airflow, noise levels, and energy consumption. Insulation around the ducts is recommended to reduce energy loss and prevent mold growth.
  • No Solid State Speed Control: Users are warned against using these fans with any solid-state speed control devices.
  • Safety Guards: If the fan is installed within reach of personnel or within seven (7) feet of the working level, or if deemed advisable for safety, guards MUST be installed.
  • Incline for Drainage: The suction pipe should be installed with a slight incline to ensure water drains away from the fan, preventing potential water accumulation and damage.
  • No Direct Connection to Building Structure: The manual explicitly states, "DO NOT connect fan directly to building structure," indicating that proper mounting and isolation from the building's structural elements are necessary to prevent vibration and noise transmission.

Maintenance Features:

The manual highlights the importance of safety precautions during installation, operation, and maintenance due to the presence of rotating parts.

  • Power Disconnection: Before any installation, servicing, or cleaning, the power supply to the unit MUST be switched off at the service panel and locked in the "OFF" position to prevent accidental power-on. If locking is not possible, a prominent warning device (e.g., a tag) should be securely fastened to the panel.
  • Qualified Personnel: Installation work and electrical wiring must be performed by qualified persons in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including fire-rated construction.
  • Airflow Considerations: The unit's operation may affect the combustion airflow needed for fuel-burning equipment. Users are advised to follow the heating equipment manufacturer's guidelines and safety standards from organizations like NFPA, ASHRAE, and local code authorities.
  • Wiring Protection: When cutting or drilling into walls and ceilings, care must be taken not to damage electrical wiring or other hidden utilities.
  • Outdoor Venting: Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.
  • Voltage Verification: Before operation, the voltage at the fan should be checked to ensure it matches the motor nameplate specifications.

Warranty:

Fantech offers a Five (5) Year Warranty, which supersedes all prior warranties. During this period, Fantech will repair or replace any part with a factory defect in workmanship or material. To claim warranty service, customers must obtain a Return Materials Authorization (RMA) number by contacting Fantech support (USA: 1.800.747.1762, Canada: 1.800.565.3548) and provide a copy of the bill of sale. The RMA number must be clearly written on the outside of the carton. The warranty does not cover damages from shipping, improper wiring or installation, acts of God, improper consumer procedures (maintenance, misuse, incorrect voltage), or alterations to the Fantech label. The user must retain the bill of sale to verify the purchase date.

Limitation of Warranty and Liability:

The warranty does not apply to failures resulting from faulty installation, abuse, incorrect electrical connections, alterations, or use under abnormal operating conditions. Fantech will not approve payments for repairs not made by them or their authorized agents without prior written consent. Fantech's liability is limited to the repair or replacement of defective parts and does not extend to special or consequential damages such as loss of profits, revenue, or costs of removal/reinstallation.

Warning on Reliability:

While Fantech products are designed for reliable performance, they are not guaranteed to be 100% free from defects. The manual acknowledges that even reliable products may experience occasional failures. If these products are used in a life support ventilation system where failure could result in loss or injury, the user should provide adequate backup ventilation, supplementary natural ventilation, a failure alarm system, or acknowledge willingness to accept the risk of such loss or injury.
