Overview

This document is a Use & Care Guide for a Frigidaire Electric Range, providing comprehensive instructions for its operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. It covers various aspects of the appliance, from initial setup to advanced cooking functions and cleaning procedures.

Function Description

The Frigidaire Electric Range is a cooking appliance designed for both surface cooking and oven baking/broiling. It features multiple surface heating elements and an oven cavity with various cooking modes, including bake and broil. The range is equipped with an electronic oven control system that allows for precise temperature settings and includes a kitchen timer. A self-cleaning function is integrated into the oven, simplifying maintenance. Safety features such as an anti-tip bracket and an oven lockout mode are also incorporated.

Usage Features

Surface Cooking:

The range includes multiple surface heating elements, typically a mix of 6-inch and 8-inch elements, each controlled by a dedicated knob. An "Element ON" indicator light illuminates when a surface element is active, serving as a visual reminder to turn off controls after cooking. The control knobs offer various settings from "LO" (simmer) to "HI" (high heat) for different cooking needs, such as boiling, frying, stewing, and melting. Proper cookware selection is emphasized, recommending flat-bottomed pans that match the element size for efficient heat transfer and optimal cooking results. Users are advised to turn utensil handles inward to prevent accidental contact and spillage.

Oven Operation:

The oven features an electronic control panel with pads for "Bake," "Broil," "Clean," "Clock," "Timer On/Off," and "Clear/Off."

  • Baking: The oven can be programmed for baking temperatures ranging from 170°F (77°C) to 550°F (287°C). Users can set the desired temperature using the "Bake" pad and arrow pads. A preheat indicator light signals when the oven has reached the set temperature. The oven also includes a "Continuous Bake" feature that overrides the 12-hour energy-saving shut-off, allowing for extended cooking times.
  • Broiling: The "Broil" function provides direct heat cooking. Users can select between "HI" and "LO" broil settings, with recommendations for different food types and rack positions. The oven door should be opened to the broil stop position during broiling to ensure proper ventilation and prevent excessive smoke. The broiler pan and insert are designed to drain fat away from the heat source, and users are cautioned against covering the insert with aluminum foil to prevent grease fires.
  • Minute Timer: A separate minute timer can be set for up to 11 hours and 59 minutes, functioning as a kitchen timer without affecting oven cooking operations.
  • Clock: The time of day can be set and displayed, and can also be turned off if desired.
  • Oven Lockout: This safety feature locks the oven door and disables the oven control pads, preventing accidental operation, especially useful in households with children.

Oven Racks:

The oven is equipped with flat oven racks that can be positioned in multiple locations to accommodate different types of cookware and cooking needs. Instructions are provided for removing, replacing, and arranging racks, with a strong recommendation to adjust rack positions when the oven is cool.

Maintenance Features

Self-Cleaning Oven:

The self-cleaning cycle uses high temperatures to burn off food soils, reducing them to a fine ash that can be wiped away. Users can select between a 2-hour cycle for light soils and a 3-hour cycle for heavier soils. Before initiating the self-clean cycle, it is crucial to remove all oven racks, the broiler pan, utensils, and any aluminum foil, as these items cannot withstand the high temperatures. Excessive spillovers, especially those with high sugar or acid content, should be cleaned manually beforehand to prevent heavy smoke or damage to the oven surface. The oven door gasket should not be cleaned or rubbed, as it is essential for a good seal. During the self-cleaning cycle, the oven door automatically locks, and the "DOOR LOCKED" light flashes. The kitchen area should be well-ventilated during the first self-clean cycle to dissipate normal odors.

General Care & Cleaning:

The manual provides a detailed cleaning recommendation table for various surfaces of the range:

  • Glass, Painted Plastic Body Parts & Control Knobs: Clean with a soft cloth, mild dish detergent and water, or a vinegar and water solution. Avoid spraying liquids directly on the control panel and display areas.
  • Painted Control Panels & Display Areas: Remove control knobs and clean with the same method as above.
  • Cooktop Surface, Below Cooktop, Broiler Pan & Insert, Door Liner & Oven Bottom: Gentle scouring with a soapy scouring pad is recommended for most spots. Ammonia-soaked paper towels can be used for difficult spots. Avoid spray oven cleaners on the range top.
  • Oven Racks: Clean with a mild, abrasive cleaner. After cleaning, rub the sides of the racks with wax paper or salad oil to facilitate gliding.
  • Oven Door: Clean the top, sides, and front of the oven door with soap and water. Glass cleaner can be used on the outside glass, but avoid immersing the door in water or allowing cleaner to enter the door vents. Do not clean the oven door gasket.
  • Stainless Steel: Clean with hot soapy water and a dishcloth. Avoid cleaners with high concentrations of chlorides or chlorines, and harsh scrubbing cleaners.
  • Surface Elements & Drip Bowls: Surface elements clean themselves when turned on. Drip bowls can be washed in hot, soapy water or a dishwasher. For stubborn stains, soak in a diluted liquid cleanser or ammonia solution. Avoid abrasive cleaners or steel wool on drip bowls. Instructions are provided for safely removing and replacing surface elements and drip bowls.
  • Lift-Off Oven Door: Detailed instructions are provided for removing and replacing the oven door for cleaning or service, emphasizing caution due to the door's weight and the need to handle hinges carefully.
  • Oven Light: Instructions are included for changing the oven light bulb, requiring the appliance to be unplugged and caution when handling the glass shield.

Troubleshooting:

A "Before You Call" section lists common problems and their solutions, such as the range not being level, surface elements not heating properly, oven control errors, excessive smoke during broiling, and issues with the self-cleaning cycle. This section helps users diagnose and resolve minor issues before contacting service.
