This document describes the setup, usage, and maintenance of a TCL Roku TV, specifically the 4-Series 85S435 model, which features 4K HDR. The manual emphasizes ease of use and integration with the Roku platform for a comprehensive entertainment experience.
Function Description
The TCL Roku TV is a smart television designed for home entertainment, offering access to thousands of streaming channels, live TV, and various input options for external devices. It supports 4K Ultra HD resolution with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for enhanced picture quality. The integrated Roku platform provides a user-friendly interface for navigating content, managing channels, and accessing smart TV features. The TV can be controlled using the included remote control or through a mobile app with voice search capabilities. It also supports integration with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice control, allowing users to search for content, control playback, adjust volume, switch inputs, and turn the TV on/off using voice commands.
Usage Features
Initial Setup:
The setup process begins with unboxing the TV. Users are advised to handle the TV carefully due to its weight. For stand installation, the bottom foam packaging should remain attached initially. Ten stand screws are removed from the back of the TV, and two plastic covers are taken off from the stand holes. The stands are then inserted into these holes, aligned with the screw holes, and secured with the previously removed screws. It is recommended that three people assist with stand installation: two to hold the TV upright, and one to install the stands. Once the stands are secure, the bottom foam packaging can be removed.
Alternatively, the TV can be wall-mounted. For wall mounting, users should skip stand installation. Four screws are removed from the back of the TV, and a VESA bracket (not included) is tightly screwed onto the back cover using these four screws. The TV can then be hung on the wall following the wall mount's instructions. The manual specifies a VESA 600x400 mount with 4 M8x20mm screws for the 85" model, emphasizing that the wall mount must support at least five times the TV's net weight.
Powering On and Remote Control:
After physical setup, the power cable is connected to the TV and plugged into a wall outlet. The TV remote requires two AAA batteries, which should be inserted with correct polarity. The remote is designed for intuitive navigation of on-screen menus. Key buttons include Power (on/off), Back (return to previous screen), Home (return to Roku Home screen), Volume (raise/lower), Instant Replay (replay last few seconds of streaming video), Options (view more options), RWD Scan (rewind streaming video, scroll left), and FWD Scan (fast forward streaming video, scroll right). The Options button provides access to picture settings and display options.
Connecting Devices:
The TV offers various ports for connecting external devices. These include an Ethernet port for wired internet, HDMI ports (including one with ARC for audio return channel) for high-quality audio/video connections (e.g., cable box, Blu-ray player, gaming console), an Antenna/Cable In port for outdoor antennas or cable TV feeds, a USB port for accessing photos, music, and movies from a USB device, an AV In adapter for older devices with analog audio/video outputs, a Headphone Out for external speakers or headphones, and an Optical (Digital Audio Out) for external digital audio systems.
Smart TV Features and Content:
The TCL Roku TV automatically detects wireless networks during setup. Users need to provide their network name and password. To activate the TV and access streaming channels, a Roku account is required. Roku accounts are free, and while a credit card is not mandatory for creation, it facilitates renting, purchasing, and subscribing to entertainment. Once connected and activated, the TV automatically updates its software, allowing immediate streaming. If not connected to a wireless network, the TV can still function as a regular TV.
The TV provides access to a vast library of content, including over 500,000 movies and TV episodes from services like Netflix, Hulu, GooglePlay Movies & TV, and VUDU. It also offers over 140 sports channels and hundreds of other streaming channels covering various interests. The 4K UHD Spotlight channel highlights 4K content available from different streaming services. The TV can upscale 1080p HD content to near 4K Ultra HD quality using TCL Creative Pro upscaling.
Voice Control:
Voice control is available through the Roku mobile app (iOS or Android) or compatible third-party voice assistant devices and voice-enabled remote controls (purchased separately). It requires a free Roku account.
- Google Assistant: Users can link their Roku account to their Google account via the Google Home mobile app. This enables searching for content, controlling playback, adjusting volume, muting, switching inputs, and turning the TV on/off. Netflix content is not supported for voice commands or search results via Google Assistant on TCL Roku TVs.
- Amazon Alexa: Users can link their Roku account to their Alexa account via the Alexa Mobile app. This allows searching, controlling playback, adjusting volume, switching inputs, and powering the TV on/off. The Roku skill for Amazon Alexa is currently supported only in the United States, and Netflix content is not supported for voice commands or search results.
Troubleshooting:
The manual includes a troubleshooting section for common issues.
- 4K Picture Quality: Ensure the source content is 4K and a broadband speed of 25Mbps is available for streaming. For external devices, use "High-Speed HDMI cables."
- Picture Too Small: If black bars appear, play the movie/video, press the asterisk (*) button on the remote, and select "Picture Size" to adjust.

Product Registration:
Users are encouraged to register their TCL TV online at www.tcl.com or by texting a photo of the camera icon to 71403. Registration makes it easier for TCL to contact the user if necessary and helps protect the purchase. It is not required for warranty coverage.

This plan offers extended manufacturer coverage (up to 4 years for parts and labor), priority service (3-5 day turn-around, free shipping), product replacement (one-time if unfixable), genuine TCL parts and factory-certified service, no deductible, pixel repair and burn-in coverage, accidental damage protection (after 30 days), complimentary removal and reinstallation for TVs 65" and larger, and a one-time remote replacement.
General Care:
The TV should be cleaned only with a dry cloth. Ventilation openings must not be blocked, and the TV should not be installed near heat sources. The power cord should be protected from being walked on or pinched. If the power cord is damaged, it should be replaced by a service person. No naked flame sources (like candles) should be placed on the apparatus. The TV should be unplugged during lightning storms or when unused for long periods. Only manufacturer-specified attachments/accessories should be used. When using a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table, caution should be exercised when moving the combination to avoid tip-over.
Servicing:
All servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required if the apparatus has been damaged in any way (e.g., damaged power-supply cord or plug, spilled liquid, fallen objects, exposure to rain or moisture, abnormal operation, or dropping).
Battery Disposal:
Used batteries from the remote control should be disposed of according to local regulations. Alkaline batteries are recommended, and mixing old and new batteries or different types (e.g., rechargeable with standard) should be avoided. Batteries should not be disposed of in fire.
Environmental Considerations:
TCL encourages consumers to recycle end-of-life electronic devices. Information on electronics recycling in all 50 states, including drop-off locations, is available on the TCL USA website.
