Step 1. Understanding what is FMC225 RS232/RS485 TCP
Link mode
In this mode link with external device (for example PC) using text messages can be established.
FMC225 has to be connected to the external device through RS232 or RS485. Any string of data
coming to RS232 or RS485 will be routed to server (if link is currently active). Messages that are
exchanged between FMC225 device and server, have to be packed in Codec.12 format. Here for TCP
link establishment we will be using Hercules. For sending messages from external device to server
over FMC225 Terminal will be used.
Step 2. Setting parameters in configurator for TCP Ascii
mode test
First of all, in the FMC225 configurator you have to set parameters for RS232 or RS485 (depends on
which RS232 or RS485 port you are using) in global parameters window.
Here in RS232 settings section Baudrate can be chosen to any available. Mode has to be chosen to
TCP Ascii.
2.1. Message Timestamp
Message Timestamp parameter is used to determine if it is necessary to include timestamp in RS232
TCP packet when sending to server. If parameter is Enabled, then Codec 13 is used for data sending.
Otherwise, Codec 12 is used.
You can also use RS485 which is also suitable for Ascii TCP Link mode. In order to make a link

Overview

This document describes the process of testing the FMC225 device in RS-232 and RS-485 TCP link mode, focusing on establishing communication between the device and a server using text messages.

Function Description

The FMC225 device, when configured in RS-232/RS-485 TCP Link mode, facilitates communication with an external device (such as a PC) using text messages. Any data string received via RS-232 or RS-485 is routed to a server, provided an active link is established. Messages exchanged between the FMC225 device and the server must be packed in Codec.12 format. For testing purposes, the Hercules SETUP utility is used for server-side operations (sending and receiving messages), and a Terminal application is used for sending messages from the external device to the server.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Communication Interfaces: RS-232 and RS-485. The device supports either interface for establishing the link with an external device.
  • Data Format: Messages exchanged between the FMC225 and the server must be packed in Codec.12 format.
  • Timestamp Inclusion: The "Message Timestamp" parameter determines whether a timestamp is included in the RS-232 TCP packet when sending data to the server.
    • If "Enabled," Codec 13 is used for data sending.
    • If "Disabled," Codec 12 is used.
  • Baudrate: Configurable for RS-232 settings within the FMC225 configurator. Any available baudrate can be chosen.
  • Mode Setting: The RS-232 or RS-485 mode must be set to "TCP Ascii" in the global parameters window of the FMC225 configurator.
  • Server Connection Parameters: Domain and Target Server Port must be configured in the device's working profile, specifically in the GPRS data sending Settings section, to establish a link between the FMC225 and the server.
  • Cable Connections:
    • External device RX cable connects to FMC225 device TX cable.
    • External device TX cable connects to FMC225 RX cable.
    • Port ½ cable connects one end to RS232 RX/TX cables on the FMC225 device and the USB side to the computer. The correct COM Port for Port ½ cable must be selected in the device manager.

Usage Features

1. Configuration of FMC225: * Access the FMC225 configurator. * In the global parameters window, set the parameters for either RS-232 or RS-485, depending on the port being used. * Select the desired Baudrate for RS-232. * Set the mode to "TCP Ascii." * Configure the "Message Timestamp" parameter as needed (Enabled for Codec 13, Disabled for Codec 12). * In the GPRS data sending Settings section of the working device profile, set the Domain and Target Server Port for server communication. * Save the configuration to the FMC225 device.

2. Establishing a Test Link with Hercules (Server Side): * Connect the FMC225 device to the PC (acting as both server and external device) via RS-232 or RS-485 cables, ensuring correct RX/TX connections. * Start the Hercules SETUP utility on the PC. * Navigate to the "TCP Server" section. * Enter the server (PC) port number and click "Listen." * Monitor the "Client connection status" to confirm successful connection between the server and FMC225.

3. Sending Messages from Server to External Device via Hercules: * In Hercules, pack the message in Codec.12 format. An example HEX format is provided: 00000000000000260C01050000001e48656c6c6f2c206c657473207465737420544350206c696e6b206d6f64650100001aef. * Paste the packed message into the "Send" field. * Ensure the "HEX format" box is unchecked if the text is already in HEX format. * Click the "Send" button. * The message will appear in the "Sent data" field (Terminal) in Hercules. * To verify successful transmission to FMC225, check the Terminal window.

4. Sending Messages from External Device to Server via Terminal: * Connect the Port ½ cable to the RS232 RX/TX cables on the FMC225 device and the USB side to the computer. * Identify the correct COM Port for the Port ½ cable in the device manager (e.g., COM21). * Open the Terminal application. * Select the correct COM Port and click "connect." * Type the desired text message into the marked field in the Terminal application. * Press the "Send" button. * To verify data reception on the server, check Hercules. Special characters (ASCII Names) need to be marked.

Maintenance Features

  • Software Updates: While not explicitly detailed, regular updates of the FMC225 firmware and configuration software are generally recommended for optimal performance and security.
  • Cable Management: Proper connection and labeling of RS-232/RS-485 and USB cables are crucial for reliable operation and troubleshooting.
  • Parameter Verification: Regularly review and verify the configured parameters in the FMC225 configurator, especially after any changes or updates, to ensure correct operation.
  • Diagnostic Tools: The Hercules SETUP utility serves as a valuable diagnostic tool for monitoring client connection status, sending/receiving data, and verifying message formats.
  • Documentation: Referring to the provided manual and online resources (like the Teltonika Wiki) is essential for understanding device functionality and troubleshooting.

This comprehensive overview covers the key aspects of using and testing the FMC225 device in RS-232/RS-485 TCP Link mode, providing a clear guide for its configuration, operation, and basic maintenance.
