Overview

The TELUS Automation Hub is a central component of your smart home security and automation system, designed to connect and manage various smart devices within your home. This guide provides comprehensive instructions for setting up, operating, and maintaining your Automation Hub, ensuring a seamless integration into your existing internet network and a robust foundation for your smart home ecosystem.

Function Description

The Automation Hub acts as the brain of your TELUS SmartHome system, enabling communication between your smart devices and the TELUS SmartHome app. It supports various wireless protocols, including Wi-Fi and Z-Wave, allowing it to connect to a wide range of smart door locks, light bulbs, smart plugs, thermostats, garage door openers, and other sensors. By centralizing control, the hub allows you to monitor and manage your home's security, lighting, climate, and more from a single interface, whether you're at home or away. It facilitates the creation of automated routines and scenes, enhancing convenience, energy efficiency, and security. For instance, you can set up a "Goodnight" scene that locks your doors, turns off lights, and adjusts the thermostat with a single command. The hub's robust connectivity ensures reliable performance for all connected devices, providing real-time updates and alerts directly to your smartphone or tablet.

Usage Features

Setting up your Automation Hub is a straightforward process, beginning with its physical connection to your existing internet modem. The guide outlines a clear, step-by-step procedure:

  1. Locate Your Modem: The first step involves identifying your internet modem, which is typically found near your TV, digital box, electrical panel in the basement, or garage. If you have trouble locating it, TELUS support is available 24/7 to assist.

  2. Connect to Modem: You'll use the provided Ethernet cable to connect the Automation Hub to an available LAN port on your modem. If your modem lacks available LAN ports, an alternative setup using a Network Switch is detailed. This involves connecting the hub to the Network Switch, and then the Network Switch to your modem, using additional Ethernet cables and power supplies. This ensures that even in complex network configurations, your hub can be properly integrated.

  3. Connect Power: Once the Ethernet connection is established, you'll connect the Automation Hub to a power outlet using its dedicated power supply.

  4. Booting Up: After connecting power, the hub will begin its booting sequence, indicated by the flashing and eventual solid illumination of its LED indicators. This process typically takes about 5 minutes. The LED Reference Guide provides detailed explanations of what each LED state signifies, helping you monitor the hub's status.

  5. Get the TELUS SmartHome App: To interact with your hub and connected devices, you'll need to download the TELUS SmartHome app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. After installation, log in using your My TELUS credentials.

  6. Add Automation and Video Devices: The app serves as your control center for adding and managing smart devices. The guide directs you to telus.com/SmartHomeGuides for specific instructions on installing various devices such as smart door locks, light bulbs, smart plugs, thermostats, range extenders, and garage door openers. It's recommended to install smart light bulbs and smart plugs first, as they often form the basis of many smart home automations.

  7. Add Device to Your Account: Within the app, navigate to the "Add Device" section to pair your smart devices with the Automation Hub. The app provides an intuitive interface to guide you through the pairing process for different categories of devices, including lighting, appliances, locks, doorbell cameras, and other video cameras.

  8. Return to Home Screen: Once your devices are added, the app's home screen will display an overview of your smart home, allowing you to monitor and control all connected devices from a centralized dashboard. You can view the status of locks, garage doors, thermostats, and lights, and make adjustments as needed.

The Automation Hub features several buttons and ports for direct interaction and connectivity:

  • Ports: Includes Ethernet for network connection and Power for electrical supply.
  • Buttons:
    • Reset: Used for factory resetting the device, which can be helpful for troubleshooting or reconfiguring the hub.
