Overview

This document serves as an instruction manual for the Greenlee DM-200A, DM-210A, and DM-510A Digital Multimeters. These devices are hand-held testing instruments designed to measure various electrical parameters.

Function Description

The Greenlee DM-200A, DM-210A, and DM-510A Digital Multimeters offer a comprehensive range of measurement capabilities. They are primarily used for measuring AC and DC voltage, AC and DC current, frequency, and resistance. Additionally, these multimeters can perform diode checks and verify continuity in circuits. For enhanced data management, an optional optically isolated computer interface with accompanying software is available, allowing users to record readings from the meter directly to a computer.

The DM-210A and DM-510A models extend these capabilities by including temperature measurement (specifically for K-type thermocouples) and capacitance measurement. The most advanced model, the DM-510A, further integrates an AutoCheck™ function. This feature automatically selects the appropriate measurement mode for AC voltage, DC voltage, and resistance, and incorporates a low input impedance to effectively suppress "ghost" voltages, which can often lead to inaccurate readings. The DM-510A also boasts a crest function, designed to capture voltage or current signal peaks, and a recording function that stores both maximum and minimum input readings. Notably, the DM-510A is a true RMS meter, providing accurate readings for both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal waveforms.

Usage Features

All models of the Greenlee Digital Multimeters share several common features designed to improve usability and safety:

  • Backlighted LCD: The display is backlit, enabling clear readability in dimly lit environments.
  • Beep-Jack™ Audible Warning: This safety feature alerts the user with an audible beep and an error message on the LCD if a test lead is incorrectly plugged into the mA/μA or A input terminal while the selector switch is not set to the corresponding current position.
  • Non-Contact and Single-Probe Voltage Detection: These multimeters can detect voltage without direct contact or using a single probe, enhancing safety and convenience.
  • Bar Graph Display: In addition to the numeric display, a bar graph provides a quicker visual response to changes in readings, which is particularly useful for identifying faulty contacts, potentiometer clicks, and signal spikes.
  • Relative Zero Mode (REL): This function allows users to set the current measurement as a zero reference, displaying subsequent readings as a difference from that reference.
  • Data Hold Mode (HOLD): Users can freeze the current reading on the display for easier recording or observation.
  • Selectable Automatic Power Off: To conserve battery life, the meter automatically shuts off after approximately 30 minutes of inactivity. This feature can be disabled if continuous operation is required.
  • Frequency Measurement (Hz): The meters can measure frequency in various voltage and current settings, with adjustable sensitivity levels to ensure stable readings.
  • Electric Field Detection (EF): This feature allows the detection of electric fields around current-carrying conductors, using either the built-in antenna for tracing live circuits or a test lead for direct contact verification of AC voltage.
  • Disabling the Beeper: The audible beeper can be temporarily disabled for situations where silence is preferred.

Specific to the DM-510A:

  • Low Impedance AutoCheck™ Mode: This mode automatically identifies and measures voltage or resistance, with a low input impedance to eliminate ghost voltages. It also provides continuity testing.
  • Range-Lock and Function Feature: In AutoCheck™ mode, users can lock the displayed function or measurement range, allowing for focused analysis.
  • Energized Circuit Alert: When in resistance mode in AutoCheck™ and leads are placed across an energized circuit, the meter emits an audible warning.
  • Recording Mode (REC): This function records maximum and minimum input values over time, with updates every 50 ms.
  • Crest Recording Mode (CREST): This mode captures voltage or current signal peaks, with measurements taken every 5 ms.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of these multimeters. Key maintenance aspects include:

  • Battery and Fuse Replacement: The manual provides clear instructions for replacing the two 1.5 V AAA batteries and the internal fuses. Users are warned to disconnect the unit from any circuit and turn it off before opening the case. The fuses are critical for overvoltage protection, and only specified types, sizes, and capacities should be used to maintain the unit's safety rating.
  • Cleaning: The case of the multimeter can be cleaned periodically with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Abrasives or solvents should be avoided to prevent damage to the unit.
  • Storage: For long-term storage, it is recommended to remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage to the device. The multimeters should be stored within specified temperature and humidity ranges.
