Overview

The Max Series Nozzles, manufactured by Task Force Tips (TFT), are fire fighting equipment designed for emergency services personnel. These nozzles offer both automatic pressure control and fixed gallonage options, available in manual and Electric Remote (ER) versions.

Function Description:

The Max Series Nozzles are primarily used for firefighting, delivering water at a flow rate sufficient to absorb heat. Automatic pressure control nozzles, such as the Max-Force and Max-Matic, sense the pressure at the nozzle's inlet and adjust the discharge opening to maintain a constant pressure throughout the flow range. This allows the stream pattern to be varied from wide fog to straight stream while flowing. The Max-Flow model operates at a fixed gallonage. All Max Series nozzles are compatible with fresh water and firefighting foam solutions.

Important Technical Specifications:

Models and Flow Ranges:

  • MAX-FORCE Dual Pressure Model:
    • Normal Pressure Setting: 100-500 GPM @ 100 PSI (400-2000 LPM @ 7 BAR / 700 KPA)
    • Low Pressure Setting: 100-500 GPM @ 55 PSI (400-2000 LPM @ 4 BAR / 400 KPA)
  • MAX-MATIC, 100 psi Single Pressure Model: 100-500 GPM @ 100 PSI (400-2000 LPM @ 7 BAR / 700 KPA)
  • MAX-MATIC, 80 psi Single Pressure Model: 100-500 GPM @ 80 PSI (400-2000 LPM @ 5.5 BAR / 550 KPA)
  • MAX-FLOW, 100 psi Fixed Gallonage: 500 GPM @ 100 PSI (2000 LPM @ 7 BAR / 700 KPA)

Mechanical Specifications (Table 3.2.1):

  • Weight:
    • Max-Force: 6.7 lb (3.0 kg)
    • Max-Matic & Max-Flow: 6.5 lb (2.9 kg)
    • Max-Force ER: 10.2 lb (4.6 kg)
    • Max-Matic ER & Max-Flow ER: 10.0 lb (4.5 kg)
  • Standard Operating Pressure: Varies by Model (see Table 3.0)
  • Maximum Fog Angle: 100°
  • Operating Temperature Range of Fluid: 33 to 120°F (1 to 50°C)
  • Storage Temperature Range: -40 to 150°F (-40 to 65°C)
  • Materials Used: Aluminum 6000 series hard anodized MIL8625 class 3 type 2, stainless steel 300 series, nylon 6-6, nitrile rubber.

Flow Characteristics (Graphs 5.0A, 5.0B, 5.0C):

The manual provides detailed flow charts illustrating pump pressure (PSI) versus flow (GPM/LPM) for various hose lengths (100 FT, 150 FT, 200 FT, 300 FT) and diameters (2 1/2" and 3"). These charts help determine adequate flow rates under different operating conditions. Nozzle reaction can be as high as 250 lbs (for 500 gpm + 100 psi).

Stream Trajectory Data (Graphs 5.1, 5.2, 5.3):

Trajectory graphs show approximate effective stream trajectory at 30 degrees elevation in no wind conditions. The distance to the last water drops is approximately 10% farther than shown. The addition of foam is expected to decrease reach by 10%. Tail or head winds of 20 MPH (30 KPH) may increase or decrease the range by approximately 30%.

Usage Features:

  • Pattern Control: Max-Series nozzles offer full pattern control from straight stream to wide fog. The pattern can be adjusted using a linear actuator (for ER versions) or by twisting the OVERRIDE KNOB (for manual versions). Moving the STREAM SHAPER forward transitions to straight stream, while moving it rearward results in a wider pattern. The stream should be "trimmed" after changing the flow to obtain the straightest and farthest reaching stream.
  • Flush Control: Small debris can be removed by moving the SHAPER rearward past the full fog position until it stops traveling, which opens the nozzle to allow debris to pass through. For ER nozzles with Smart Stream technology, the Fog button must be pressed and held a second time to reach the Flush position, preventing unintentional flushing.
  • Standard/Low Pressure Knob (Max-Force Only): The Max-Force dual pressure knob allows switching to a low pressure mode (55 PSI / 4 BAR) when 100 psi is impractical. This reduces nozzle pressure by about 50% while maintaining a usable stream and increasing flow. To switch, shut off water flow and turn the knob counterclockwise (for low pressure) or clockwise (for 100 psi operation).
  • Electric Installation (ER Versions): Non-plug ER nozzles are shipped with wiring diagram LIM-040. Plug version ER nozzles refer to LIY-500 Remote Control (RC) Monitor Electrical Controls. ER nozzles are equipped with manual override for electrical power failure. These devices are not rated as ignition proof, explosion proof, or intrinsically safe and must be used in locations with adequate ventilation and no hazard of flammable vapor buildup.
  • Foam Aspirating Attachments: Multi-expansion or low expansion aspirating attachments can be used to increase the expansion ratio, though this may decrease the nozzle's reach by approximately 10% compared to water only.

Maintenance Features:

  • Salt Water Use: Permissible with salt water, provided the nozzle is thoroughly cleaned with fresh water after each use. However, service life may be shortened due to corrosion and is not covered under warranty.
  • Field Lubrication: TFT nozzles are designed and manufactured to be damage resistant and require minimal maintenance. However, periodic lubrication of the O-rings with a waterproof lubricant is recommended to ensure continued smooth operation and prevent swelling.
  • Service Testing: Equipment should be tested annually in accordance with NFPA 1962. Factory serviced equipment is repaired by experienced technicians, and repair parts and service procedures are available.
  • Repair: Performance tests must be conducted on the equipment after a repair or anytime it is subject to possible damage due to freezing.
  • Exploded View and Parts List: Available at tft.com/serial-number for detailed repair and maintenance.
  • Operation and Inspection Checklist: Provided for pre-use and pre-service inspection, covering aspects like damage, obstructions, coupling tightness, valve operation, flow adequacy, pattern adjustment, and overall condition. Equipment failing any part of this checklist is unsafe for use.

The Max Series Nozzles are designed for rugged use, with hardcoat anodized aluminum and UV resistant rubber construction, ensuring durability and compatibility with various firefighting scenarios.
