SHELL
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Imagine a curved surface covering the outside of
this model. In architecture, a shell is a structural
element that is defined by its shape. It is a curved
three-dimensional shape that is very thin in one
dimension compared to the other two
dimensions.
A shell is a curved plate. A plate is another
architectural element defined by its shape. Like a
shell, it is a three-dimensional shape that is very
thin in one dimension compared to the others.
The difference is that it is flat, not curved. The
surface of the plate is in one plane.
