WHAT’S HAPPENING
When you added the braces, you
made the cylinder much more
resistant to deformation. Even
the flexible plastic rods become
more rigid when connected like
this. It’s partly thanks to
triangles. Continue to the next
page to find out more.
Architectural Engineering
Architects want to design buildings in
all sorts of different shapes and sizes
to meet the needs to the inhabitants
and users of the spaces in them. Let’s
try building a simple three-
dimensional volume — a cylinder. And
then, we’ll make it more structurally
stable by adding braces to it.
