Overview

The Thermo Scientific TSG Series 5.5 cu.ft. Undercounter Refrigerator is a laboratory-grade appliance designed for professional use, specifically for cold storage in research and as a general-purpose laboratory refrigerator. It is intended for storing samples and inventory at operating temperatures between 2°C and 10°C. This unit is not classified as a medical device and has not been evaluated for the storage of samples for diagnostic use or for samples to be re-introduced into the body. It is also not intended for use in classified hazardous locations or for storing flammable or corrosive inventory.

Function Description:

The refrigerator utilizes a solid-state refrigeration system with a single 125 W thermoelectric heat pump. This system employs a non-toxic, non-hazardous R744 refrigerant embedded in the walls to absorb and channel heat energy. The heat pump cools the refrigerant material by channeling heat out of the system and into the ambient environment. This design eliminates internal mechanical parts, contributing to ease of operation and minimal maintenance. The unit is designed to pull down to its target set point temperature within a couple of hours in a normal ambient environment.

  • Storage Conditions: Indoors, -40°C to 32°C, Relative Humidity 10% - 95%.
  • Warranty: 2 years on all parts and labor, 5 years on thermoelectric heat pumps part.
  • Certifications: ENERGY STAR® certified (Laboratory Grade Refrigerator and Freezer category), SGS & CSGSus listed, CE Marked (RoHS, EMC, LVD), REACH compliant.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The unit requires leveling using adjustable feet. Proper ventilation is crucial; the ventilation area above the door handle must not be blocked. It should be plugged into a grounded three-prong receptacle, and the power cord must be secured to prevent accidental disconnection. It is advised not to connect to a GFCI circuit to avoid nuisance tripping.
  • Power On and Set Point Temperature: Upon powering on, the fan runs to reach the default set point temperature of 5.0°C (41°F). Once reached, fan speed reduces to conserve energy. Temperature range alarms are enabled after the unit reaches its preset temperature range plus an offset of 3°C (e.g., 8°C if set point is 5°C).
  • Loading Products: Do not load products until the default set point is reached. Ensure at least one inch (25 mm) of clearance around the air temperature sensor. When loading room temperature samples, do so in small increments to maintain stable temperature.
  • Door Management: To minimize temperature fluctuations, users are advised to list contents on a chart, use labeled bins, and avoid storing non-sample items. The unit has a visible and audible open door alarm that sounds if the door is open for more than a minute.
  • Automatic Defrost Cycles: The refrigerator performs automatic defrost cycles, with periods varying from 6 to 96 hours depending on usage. During defrost, fans may cycle on and off, and air temperature may briefly rise to 6°C (43°F).
  • User Interface: The 1.44" TFT-LCD display with capacitive touch buttons allows navigation and control.
    • LED Indicator: Green when ON and running normally; red for concerns like low battery or other alarms. A flashing red light and audible beep every 5 seconds indicates a power outage/backup battery until the battery is exhausted.
    • Preprogrammed Settings: Default set point is 5.0°C (41°F). Upper threshold alarm is 10.0°C (50.0°F), and lower threshold alarm is 2.0°C (35.6°F). These settings can be customized.
    • Preset Alarms/Alerts: Includes Temperature Range Alarm (Min 2°C Max 10°C), Door Ajar Alarm (1 minute), No Power Alarm (>10 seconds outage), and Battery Low Alarm (<15% remaining). Alarms can be cleared via the display.
    • Set Point Temperature: Adjustable in 0.5-degree increments (Celsius or Fahrenheit).
    • Calibration: Allows coordination with a third-party external NIST calibrated reference thermometer. Changes to calibration offset will affect performance and should only be made to reflect NIST readings.
    • System Information: Displays current settings, including set temperature, high/low temperature alarms, and calibration.
    • Model Information: Displays model number, UI FW version, UI FW date, and TEC FW version.
    • Firmware Updates: Conducted via the Firmware menu using a BIN file on a USB drive.
  • Backup Battery: A non-rechargeable lithium CR123A battery (or IEC16340 type) provides continuous power for audible and visual alerts during power loss. It does not power the refrigeration system itself. The battery is activated by removing a protective tab from inside the I/O Dock panel.
  • Door Lock: Mechanical door lock with two keys provided.
  • Access Port: Located on the back, sealed with a foam plug that must be removed for use. Reinserting the plug snugly and flush is recommended to insulate against cooling loss.
  • Adjustable Shelving: Shelves are shipped with protective wrapping and can be repositioned using support clips in mounting rails. Only shelves should be used for storage; the cabinet floor should not be loaded.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Interior/Exterior: Clean with a mild detergent and a damp cloth. Avoid chlorides (bleach), abrasive cleaners, and steel wool, as these can degrade the protective coating and lead to rust.
    • Ventilation Area: Periodically inspect and clean dust accumulation above the door with a duster or vacuum cleaner. Do not remove the top cover or attempt to clean the power supply.
    • Condensate Tray: Located at the bottom rear of the exterior cabinet. The bottom shelf can be removed for periodic cleaning or if excessive moisture/spills affect the unit's bottom.
  • General Maintenance: Occasional checks for dust buildup on the external fan and cleaning are recommended. Otherwise, no specific maintenance is required to keep the system working at peak performance.
  • Calibration: The air sensor should be calibrated annually to ensure proper calibration in the working environment.
