Overview

This document describes the 22-inch Recycler Lawn Mower, Models 20066 and 20067, from Toro. It serves as an operator's manual, providing essential information for safe and proper operation, as well as maintenance procedures. The manual emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding its contents to prevent injury and product damage.

The primary function of this device is to cut grass and leaves, with options for bagging, side-discharging, or recycling clippings back into the lawn. The "Recycler" feature suggests an emphasis on mulching, which returns finely cut grass and leaves to the soil as natural fertilizer.

Usage Features:

The mower is designed for walk-behind operation, with a self-propel drive system that automatically adjusts to the operator's walking pace. This feature enhances user comfort and reduces effort during mowing.

Starting the engine involves a primer button, which needs to be pushed a specific number of times depending on the air temperature (3 times for temperatures above 55°F/13°C, 5 times for colder temperatures). For Model 20067, an ignition key is used for electric starting, while both models also feature a recoil start handle. The blade control bar must be held against the handle to engage the engine. To stop the engine, the operator simply releases the blade control bar. A critical safety feature is that both the engine and blade should stop within 3 seconds of releasing the control bar; if not, immediate service is required.

Cutting height adjustment is a key feature, allowing the user to select from various heights ranging from 1-1/4 inches (32mm) to 4-1/4 inches (108mm). It's recommended to set the front and rear wheels to the same height for even cutting. The manual advises against cutting more than a third of the grass blade at a time and suggests mowing at the highest setting for very tall grass, followed by a lower setting for a better finish.

The mower offers different methods for handling clippings:

  • Recycling: The mower is factory-ready for recycling grass and leaf clippings. This involves removing the grass bag or side discharge chute and locking the side discharge door.
  • Bagging: For collecting clippings, a grass bag can be installed by raising the rear door and attaching the bag. The manual warns to frequently check the grass bag for damage and replace it if necessary, as a worn bag could throw debris.
  • Side-discharging: This option is useful for cutting very tall grass. It requires unlocking and installing a side discharge chute. If the grass bag is on, it must be removed first.

Safety is a paramount concern, with warnings about keeping hands and feet away from the blade, operating only in daylight or good artificial light, and never operating the mower in wet grass. The manual also highlights the dangers of gasoline, emphasizing safe handling, storage, and refueling practices. For Model 20067, a Proposition 65 warning regarding engine exhaust and battery components is included.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides a recommended maintenance schedule to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the mower.

Engine Oil:

  • The engine comes without oil, so it must be filled before the first use. The manual specifies SAE 30W detergent oil with an API service classification of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or higher.
  • The first oil change is recommended after the initial 5 operating hours, and yearly thereafter.
  • Checking the oil level is a daily or pre-use task, ensuring it stays between the "Add" and "Full" marks on the dipstick.
  • When changing oil, the engine should be run for a few minutes to warm the oil, making it flow better and carry more contaminants. The mower is then tipped onto its side with the air filter up to drain the used oil.

Air Filter:

  • The air filter should be replaced yearly, or more frequently in dusty conditions. Replacement involves opening the air filter cover with a screwdriver and swapping out the filter.

Battery (Model 20067 only):

  • The mower comes with a 40-amp fuse that must be installed for the electric starter to work and for the battery to charge.
  • The battery requires an initial 24-hour charge, then monthly (every 25 starts) or as needed. Charging should occur in a sheltered area at room temperature.
  • The manual provides instructions for connecting the charger to the mower's wire harness and plugging it into a wall outlet.
  • If the battery doesn't charge or the electric starter fails, the fuse may be blown and needs replacement with a 40-amp plug-in type fuse.

Blade:

  • The blade should be checked frequently, especially when running out of gasoline. It should be sharpened or replaced if dull, nicked, or cracked.
  • Replacing the blade involves stopping the engine, disconnecting the spark plug wire, tipping the mower, holding the blade steady with a block of wood, and removing the mounting hardware. A torque wrench is required to tighten the new blade bolt to 60 ft-lb (82 N·m).

Self-propel Drive Cable:

  • Adjustment of the self-propel drive cable is necessary when installing a new cable or if the drive is out of adjustment. This involves loosening a support nut, pulling down the cable jacket to remove slack, and then tightening the nut.

Cleaning:

  • The mower should be cleaned after each use. This involves lowering the cutting height, moving the mower to a paved surface, attaching a garden hose to the washout port, turning on the water, starting the engine to clear clippings, stopping the engine, shutting off the water, and running the engine again briefly to dry the housing and prevent rust.

Storage:

  • Before storage, fuel stabilizer should be added to the fuel, and the engine run until it stops from lack of fuel to ensure the fuel system is dry.
  • The spark plug should be removed, 1 oz. (30 ml) of oil added to the cylinder, and the starter rope pulled slowly to distribute the oil, preventing corrosion. The spark plug is then loosely reinstalled.
  • All nuts, bolts, and screws should be tightened.
  • For Model 20067, the battery needs a 24-hour charge before storage and every 90 days if stored in a heated area.
  • The handle can be folded for compact storage by loosening the handle knobs and folding the upper handle forward, ensuring cables are routed outside the knobs.

The manual also includes important warnings about carbon monoxide from engine exhaust and Proposition 65 warnings for California residents regarding chemicals in engine exhaust and battery components. It stresses the importance of using genuine Toro parts and contacting an Authorized Service Dealer for repairs or if any safety device malfunctions.
