Overview

The device described in the manual is a 21in Recycler®/Rear Bagging Lawn Mower manufactured by Toro. It is a rotary-blade, walk-behind lawn mower designed for residential homeowners to cut grass on well-maintained lawns. Its primary function is to cut and either recycle grass and leaf clippings back into the lawn or collect them in a grass bag.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides specifications for two models: 21332 and 21352.

  • Model 21332:
    • Weight: 30 kg (67 lb)
    • Length: 142 cm (56 inches)
    • Width: 56 cm (22 inches)
    • Height: 102 cm (40 inches)
  • Model 21352:
    • Weight: 34 kg (76 lb)
    • Length: 142 cm (56 inches)
    • Width: 56 cm (22 inches)
    • Height: 102 cm (40 inches)

Engine Oil Specifications:

  • Engine oil capacity: 0.44 L (15 fl oz)
  • Oil viscosity: SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30 detergent oil
  • API service classification: SJ or higher

Fuel Specifications:

  • Type: Unleaded gasoline
  • Minimum octane rating: 87 (US) or 91 (research octane; outside the US)
  • Ethanol content: No more than 10% by volume
  • Methanol content: None
  • MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) content: Less than 15% by volume
  • Oil: Do not add to the fuel.
  • Fuel should be clean, fresh (no more than 30 days old), from a reputable source. Fuel stabilizer/conditioner is recommended to reduce starting problems.

Blade Torque Specification:

  • Blade bolt tightening torque: 82 N·m (60 ft-lb)

Usage Features:

The mower offers several features for operation and convenience:

  • Self-Propel Drive (Self-Propel Model Only): The self-propel drive is engaged by pulling the self-propel-drive bar to the handle. The maximum speed is fixed, but speed can be reduced by increasing the space between the self-propel-drive bar and the handle.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: The cutting height can be adjusted by setting all wheels to the desired height. The manual illustrates various cutting heights ranging from 32 mm (1-1/2 inches) to 95 mm (3-3/4 inches).
  • Recycling and Bagging: The machine comes factory-ready to recycle grass and leaf clippings. A grass bag can be installed to collect clippings.
  • Handle Folding: The handle can be folded for storage or transport by loosening the handle knobs and moving the handle forward.
  • Engine Start/Stop: The engine is started by holding the blade-control bar against the handle and pulling the recoil-start handle. To shut off the engine, release the blade-control bar. The engine should shut off and the blade stop within 3 seconds.
  • Operating Tips:
    • Cut only about a third of the grass blade at a time, not below 51 mm (2 inches) unless grass is sparse or it's late fall.
    • Avoid mowing in wet conditions to prevent clumping and stalling.
    • Alternate mowing direction for even clipping dispersal.
    • Slow down mowing speed when cutting leaves for finer results.
    • Always inspect the mowing area for objects that could interfere or be thrown.
    • Wear appropriate clothing, including eye and hearing protection, long pants, and slip-resistant footwear.
    • Do not operate the machine while ill, tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
    • Mow across slopes, not up and down, and use caution near drop-offs.

Maintenance Features:

The manual outlines a comprehensive maintenance schedule and procedures:

  • Before Each Use or Daily:
    • Check engine-oil level and add oil as needed.
    • Ensure the engine shuts off within 3 seconds after releasing the blade-control bar.
  • After Each Use:
    • Clean grass clippings and dirt from under the machine. This involves lowering the cutting height, moving the machine to a paved surface, and spraying water in front of the right, rear wheel with the engine running and blade engaged, then running the engine for a few minutes to dry.
  • Every 25 Hours:
    • Service the air filter more frequently in dusty conditions.
  • Yearly:
    • Replace the air filter.
    • Replace or sharpen the blade (more frequently if the edge dulls quickly).
    • Clean the engine by removing dirt and debris from its top and sides (more frequently in dusty conditions).
  • Yearly or Before Storage:
    • Empty the fuel tank before repairs and yearly storage.
  • Engine Oil Check/Change: The manual details how to check the oil level using the dipstick and how to add oil. While changing engine oil is not required, a procedure is provided for those who wish to do so, including warming the engine, tipping the machine to drain oil, and refilling.
  • Blade Replacement: Instructions are provided for safely removing and installing the blade, emphasizing the use of a torque wrench for proper tightening.
  • Air Filter Servicing: Steps include lifting the tab to open the air-filter cover, replacing the filter, and closing the cover.
  • Preparing for Maintenance: Always shut off the engine, wait for moving parts to stop, and disconnect the spark-plug wire before performing any maintenance.
  • Storage:
    • Add fuel stabilizer to fresh fuel for the last refueling of the year.
    • Run the machine until the engine shuts off from running out of fuel to ensure it is sufficiently dry.
    • Disconnect the spark-plug wire.
    • Remove the spark plug, add 30 ml (1 fl oz) of engine oil through the spark-plug hole, and pull the starter rope slowly to distribute oil.
    • Loosely install the spark plug.
    • Tighten all nuts, bolts, and screws.
    • Store in a cool, clean, dry place.
  • Removing from Storage: Check and tighten fasteners, remove the spark plug and spin the engine to blow out excess oil, install and tighten the spark plug, perform maintenance, check engine oil, fill with fresh fuel, and connect the spark-plug wire.

The manual also includes safety warnings, instructional decals, and information regarding California Proposition 65. It stresses the importance of using genuine Toro replacement parts and accessories to ensure optimum performance and safety.
