This document serves as a comprehensive operator's manual for the Toro Titan® X4850, X5450, XS4850, and XS5450 Riding Mowers, covering models 74874, 74877, 74887, and 74889 (all with serial numbers 400000000 and up). It provides detailed instructions for safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the machine.
Function Description:
The Toro Titan® Riding Mower is a rotary-blade, riding lawn mower designed for residential applications. Its primary function is to cut grass on well-maintained lawns. It is not intended for cutting brush, mowing alongside highways, or agricultural uses. The machine is equipped with a foot pedal deck-lift system, allowing the operator to raise and lower the mower deck from the seated position to avoid obstacles or adjust cutting height. Motion-control levers enable forward, reverse, and turning in either direction, providing enhanced maneuverability. The blade-control switch (PTO) engages and disengages power to the mower blades. The MyRide™ suspension system (on MyRide models only) offers adjustable rear springs for a smooth and comfortable ride, allowing operators to customize the suspension to their preference. The mower deck and blades are designed for optimum mulching and side-discharge performance.

- Engine Torque: Gross or net torque is laboratory rated by the engine manufacturer according to SAE J1940 or J2723. Actual engine torque will be significantly lower due to safety, emission, and operating requirements.
- Fuel Type: Clean, fresh (less than 30 days old), unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher ((R+M)/2 rating method). Ethanol content should not exceed 10% by volume. Methanol-containing gasoline is not recommended.
- Engine Oil Type: Detergent oil (API service SF, SG, SH, SJ, or SL).
- Crankcase Capacity: 2.4 L (81 fl oz) with oil filter.
- Spark Plug Type: Champion® RN9YC or NGK® BPR6ES.
- Spark Plug Air Gap: 0.76 mm (0.03 inch).
- Tire Pressure: Front caster wheel tires: 103 kPa (15 psi); Rear drive wheel tires: 90 kPa (13 psi).
- Fuses: Main—F1 (15 A, blade-type); Charge Circuit—F2 (25 A, blade-type).
- Maximum Slope: Do not operate on slopes greater than 15 degrees.
- Sound Levels: The machine produces sound levels in excess of 85 dBA at the operator’s ear, which can cause hearing loss through extended periods of exposure. Hearing protection is recommended.
Usage Features:
- Starting and Stopping: The engine starts when the blade-control switch (PTO) is disengaged, motion-control levers are in NEUTRAL-LOCK, and the parking brake is engaged. The engine shuts off if control levers are out of NEUTRAL-LOCK and the operator rises from the seat.
- Throttle Control: Continuous-variable setting from SLOW to FAST. FAST position is recommended for engaging the PTO and best performance.
- Choke Control: Used for starting a cold engine.
- Hour Meter: Records engine operating hours for maintenance scheduling.
- Height of Cut Adjustment: Adjustable from 38 to 114 mm (1-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches) in 6 mm (1/4 inch) increments using the height-of-cut pin.
- Anti-Scalp Rollers: Adjustable to prevent scalping on uneven turf; should not touch the ground on normal, flat mowing areas.
- Side Discharge: The mower has a hinged grass deflector that disperses clippings to the side and down toward the turf. Conversion to side discharge involves removing mulching baffles and installing a cutoff baffle.
- Driving: The machine's drive wheels turn independently, powered by hydraulic motors, allowing for tight turns and pivots. Operators should use caution and reduce speed during sharp turns.
- Slope Operation: The maximum safe slope for operation is 15 degrees. Operators are advised to avoid starting, stopping, or turning on slopes and to use caution on wet grass or near drop-offs.
- Towing: Towed equipment should only be attached at the hitch point. The towed weight must not exceed the combined weight of the machine and operator, especially on slopes.
- Transporting: Use a heavy-duty trailer with a full-width ramp. The ramp angle should not exceed 15 degrees. Back the machine up the ramp and drive it forward down the ramp. Secure the machine with straps near the front caster wheels and rear bumper.
Maintenance Features:
- Daily Maintenance: Before each use, check the safety-interlock system, air cleaner, engine-oil level, engine air intake screen, blades, and grass deflector.
- Engine Oil: Change engine oil and filter after the first 5 hours, then every 100 hours or yearly (more often in dirty conditions). Check oil level daily when the engine is cold.
- Air Cleaner: Clean the foam element every 25 hours/monthly and replace it every 100 hours/yearly. Clean the paper element every 100 hours and replace it every 200 hours. Do not clean the paper filter with pressurized water.
- Spark Plug: Check spark plugs every 100 hours/yearly and replace them every 200 hours/2 years. Ensure the correct air gap of 0.76 mm (0.03 inch).
- Cooling System: Clean the cooling system (debris and grass from fan housing) every 100 hours.
- Fuel System: Check the in-line fuel filter every 100 hours/yearly and replace it every 200 hours/2 years.
- Battery: Charge the battery before storage and disconnect cables. Check voltage periodically.
- Fuses: The electrical system is protected by 15A (main) and 25A (charge circuit) blade-type fuses. Replace blown fuses as needed.
- Tire Pressure: Check tire pressure every 25 hours.
- Belts: Inspect belts for wear or cracks every 25 hours. Replace the mower belt if worn.
- Cutting Blades: Inspect blades for sharpness, wear, or damage daily. Sharpen or replace blades as needed. Check for bent blades and level the mower deck side-to-side and front-to-rear.
- Grass Deflector: Inspect for damage daily and replace if necessary.
- Cleaning: Clean grass, dirt, and grime from external parts, engine, and hydraulic system after each use. Do not pressure-wash the machine, especially near sensitive components. For MyRide models, do not clean shock assemblies with pressurized water.
- Storage: Prepare the machine for storage if not used for over 30 days, including adding fuel stabilizer, draining the fuel tank, and removing/checking spark plugs. Store the battery in a cool, dry, upright position.
The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to help diagnose common issues and provides an electrical schematic for reference. Safety is emphasized throughout, with clear warnings and cautions to prevent personal injury and product damage.
