Do you have a question about the Toshiba KT-4568 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Toshiba KT-4568 is a stereo radio cassette player, designed for portable audio entertainment. It combines the functionality of a cassette player with an AM/FM radio tuner, offering a versatile listening experience.

Function Description

The device primarily functions as a stereo cassette player and an AM/FM radio. It supports various tape types, including normal ferric, chrome dioxide, and metal alloy, with tape lengths from C-30 to C-90. The cassette player features auto-reverse, allowing continuous playback without manually flipping the tape. Tape direction indicators (FWD, REV) are present, along with battery indicators (BATT).

For radio reception, the KT-4568 includes both FM and AM bands. It offers digital tuning with precise frequency steps: 0.1 MHz for FM in U.S.A./Canada, 0.05 MHz for FM in Europe/Australia/others, 10 kHz for AM in U.S.A./Canada (Case 1), and 9 kHz for AM in Europe/Australia/others (Case 2). The radio tuner also features 10 station presets for quick access to favorite stations.

A built-in graphic equalizer with controls for 100 Hz, 1 kHz, and 10 kHz allows users to customize the audio output. The device also incorporates Dolby noise reduction, which can be switched on or off, to enhance sound quality during cassette playback. A digital tuner display shows the current frequency, and a time display includes an alarm function with an "ALARM ON" indicator.

Control buttons include STOP, REW/FF (fast rewind/fast forward), PLAY, DIRECTION, REVERSE MODE selector, GRAPHIC EQUALIZER controls, MEMORY, FM/AM band selection, TUNING buttons (also used for HOUR, MIN time setting), MODE, ALARM, ALARM STOP, and VOLUME control. Additional controls include an OPEN button for the cassette compartment, a TAPE selector (NORMAL, METAL/CrO2), an FM mode selector (FM-MONO, FM-ST), a Function selector (TAPE/RADIO OFF, RADIO), and a PHONES jack.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides detailed disassembly instructions for servicing the device. Back Cabinet Removal:

  1. Remove specific screws (one screw Ⓐ, two screws Ⓑ, and two screws Ⓒ). Note that models with manufacturing numbers #22001 and higher may have an additional screw in the Ⓓ section.
  2. Carefully remove the back cabinet. A mask sheet is pasted on the Ⓓ section for servicing; if a screw is tightened on this section, the mask sheet must be removed with a screwdriver. Front Cabinet Removal:
  3. Remove the back cabinet.
  4. Remove two screws Ⓔ.
  5. Remove the front cabinet from the Ⓕ or Ⓖ section. Note that steel balls and springs are present in the Ⓕ and Ⓖ sections, requiring careful handling to avoid loss.

The manual also includes comprehensive adjustment procedures for AM and FM alignment, output level, and motor speed, ensuring the device can be calibrated for optimal performance. These procedures involve using specialized equipment such as signal generators, sweep generators, oscilloscopes, and VTVMs. For instance, AM alignment involves adjusting coils and trims to achieve maximum signal indication, while FM alignment focuses on setting intermediate frequencies and ensuring proper stereo separation. Output level adjustment ensures consistent audio output, and motor speed adjustment maintains accurate tape playback speed.
