Overview

The Toshiba Electric Rice Cooker, model TRSH01, is a household appliance designed for cooking various types of rice and grains, as well as steaming. It incorporates Fuzzy Logic technology to sense moisture levels and accurately adjust heat and timing for optimal cooking results.

Function Description:

The rice cooker offers multiple cooking programs, including:

  • LOW CARB: For cooking rice with reduced carbohydrate content. It requires the use of a metal steamer for washing rice and specific water level lines on the steamer. Recommended volume: 1-2 cups.
  • QUICK RICE: For faster rice cooking. Recommended volume: 1-5.5 cups. Water levels are based on the "WHITE RICE" line on the inner pan.
  • WHITE RICE: Standard program for white rice. Recommended volume: 1-5.5 cups. Water levels are based on the "WHITE RICE" line on the inner pan.
  • BROWN RICE: Program for brown rice. Recommended volume: 1-3 cups. Water levels are based on the "BROWN RICE" line on the inner pan.
  • MIXED GRAIN: For cooking mixed grains. Recommended volume: 1-3 cups. Water levels are based on the "WHITE RICE" line on the inner pan. Mixed grains require soaking in water above 176°F (80°C) for 2 hours before cooking.
  • QUINOA: Program for quinoa. Recommended volume: 1-5.5 cups. Water levels are based on the "WHITE RICE" line on the inner pan.
  • STEAM: For steaming food. Default cooking time is 30 minutes, adjustable up to 1 hour or by minute increments using the HR./MIN. buttons. Water levels are based on the "STEAM" line on the inner pan.
  • OATMEAL: Program for oatmeal. Recommended volume: 1-2 cups. Water levels are based on the recommended amount for oatmeal.

The appliance features a "Keep Warm" mode that automatically activates after cooking, maintaining food warmth for up to 24 hours. A "Preset" function (Delay Timer) allows users to set two different cooking completion times (Timer1 and Timer2) up to 24 hours in advance, though it's recommended not to exceed 12 hours to prevent food deterioration. The "Preset" function is not available for Quinoa and Oatmeal programs.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: 120 V, grounded electrical supply is required. A separate circuit is recommended to prevent overheating.
  • Plug Type: 2-prong plug.
  • Capacity: The cooking pot has a maximum capacity of 5.5 cups (2.5 L) for total food and water.
  • Control Panel: Features "MENU," "KEEP WARM/CANCEL," "START," "PRESET," "HR.," and "MIN." buttons. A digital screen displays current time, cooking time countdown, and program status.
  • Safety Features: Includes warnings against using adapters or extension cords, touching hot surfaces, immersing the unit in water, and operating with damaged parts. It also advises against exceeding MAX fill levels and using metal utensils.

Usage Features:

  • Measuring Rice: Use the provided Rice Measure cup for accurate rice-to-water ratios. Level the rice in the cup.
  • Rinsing Rice: Some rice types require rinsing to remove excess starch. Rinse under cool running water, stirring to separate grains, until the water runs clear. Measure rice before rinsing.
  • Adding Ingredients: Add other ingredients or seasonings after adding water to ensure proper cooking.
  • Placement: For indoor household use only, on a stable, level, non-heat sensitive surface. Maintain a minimum clearance of 12 inches (30.5 cm) from walls or cabinets to prevent steam/heat damage.
  • Cooking Process:
    1. Wash and dry the cooking pot, inner lid, steam port, and accessories before first use.
    2. Measure and rinse rice (if needed).
    3. Add rice to the cooking pot.
    4. Add water up to the corresponding numbered Water Line in the pot.
    5. Stir rice to ensure even immersion.
    6. Place the cooking pot into the rice cooker and rotate 2-3 times for solid contact with the heating plate.
    7. Close the lid until it clicks.
    8. Plug into a grounded 2-prong outlet.
    9. Select the desired cooking program using the "MENU" button.
    10. Press "START."
    11. After cooking, the unit automatically switches to "Keep Warm" mode.
  • Setting Current Time: In standby mode, press "HR." for 3 seconds, then use "HR." and "MIN." to set the 24-hour clock. The setting is completed after pressing "START" or 10-15 seconds of inactivity.
  • Delay Cooking: Select a function, press "PRESET," then use "HR." and "MIN." to set the desired completion time. Press "START" to activate.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Cleaning: Unplug and allow the rice cooker to cool before cleaning. Clean and dry all parts after each use to prevent odors and maintain performance.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth with mild dish soap, then dry thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth. Do NOT immerse the rice cooker in water.
  • Cooking Pot: The non-stick coating can be damaged by abrasive cleansers, vinegar, bleaching agents, steel wool, harsh scrubbing brushes, or metal cooking utensils. Wash with a soft cloth and nonabrasive cleanser or mild dish soap, then dry thoroughly. Seasonings left in contact with the pot may damage the coating.
  • Inner Lid: Open the lid, press upward on the tab to release and remove the inner lid. Wash and dry, then replace by setting the lower edge into the groove and pressing the upper edge under the tab until it snaps into place.
  • Steam Valve: Clean frequently to ensure proper venting. Ensure the cooker is cool. Grasp the tab on the Steam Valve Cover, lift to remove. Push in to release the latch and open the valve seat. Wash the steam valve with soap and water, then dry. Reinsert the steam vent gasket if it comes off. Reinstall the steam valve cover by aligning the valve seat with the opening and pressing downward until it clicks.
  • Condensation: Dry any condensation that collects around the cooking pot and under the steam valve cover with a soft cloth.
  • Heating Plate: Remove any burned residue with a steel wool pad, then wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

Troubleshooting Tips:

The manual provides solutions for common issues such as:

  • Rice cooker not operating: Check power cord, power failure, or tripped circuit breaker.
  • Mushy, sticky, or clumping rice: Adjust water amount, fluff rice after cooking, or ensure proper rinsing.
  • Hard or dry rice: Adjust water amount, or soak rice for a short time.
  • Scorched rice: Clean temperature sensor, avoid adding ingredients before water, or reduce soaking time.
  • Rice does not taste good: Allow cooker to cool between batches, clean sensors/vents, ensure inner lid/steam vent are attached, use correct ingredient-to-water ratio.
  • Unpleasant odor: Normal for first uses (plastic odor). Avoid prolonged "Keep Warm" mode, remove cooked rice promptly, rinse rice thoroughly, clean dirty parts, remove accessories from pot before cooking.
  • Dry/discolored rice: Reheat only once, sprinkle with water during reheating, ensure steam vent is attached.
  • Steam escaping: Check inner lid/gasket, ensure inner lid/cooking pot are not deformed, clean foreign substances from rim.
  • Boiling over/spattering: Ensure inner lid/steam vent are attached, clean steam vent/temperature sensor, select correct program.
  • Difficult to close lid: Ensure inner lid is attached properly, remove debris from lid latch well.
  • Film on interior of cooking pot: Use a non-abrasive plastic scouring pad to remove starch film.

Error codes (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, C2, EU, C4) are displayed for various sensor issues, communication errors, or missing pot.
