Tuner control
This button switches in turn to the following reception
modes: 'narrow band STEREO', 'broad band STEREO',
'narrow band STEREO with attenuator' and 'narrow band
MONO'.
The mode just selected appears briefly in the display
every time you press the
button. Glowing sym-
bols in the display window indicate when you have
selected the WIDE mode and the attenuator
(ATTENuator).

The receiver 's basic reception mode is 'narrow band
STEREO' (NARROW). At this setting the tuner
suppresses interference from adjacent transmitters, and
produces outstanding reproduction quality even under
difficult reception conditions.
However, if reception conditions are very good, and if
there are no transmitters adjacent to the station selected,
then you can achieve even better results by switching to
the WIDE setting. The theoretical drawback of this mode
is reduced selectivity, so if you hear interference on the
WIDE setting, we suggest that you switch back to
NARROW.
If you are listening to a station close to an unusually
powerful local transmitter, you may hear intermodulation
effects (whistling and twittering sounds). If this happens,
switch on the attenuator (ATTEN).
When you want to listen to a very weak or very distant
station, you may find that the programme is accompanied
by severe background hiss. In this case you can use the
same button to switch to MONO, which reduces
background hiss considerably.
Selecting MONO mode also reduces the seek threshold
automatically. The effect is that an automatic search now
also stops at distant, weak and slightly hissy stations.
This button is used to store and erase transmitter settings
(presets) - see the section entitled 'Storing and erasing
presets'.

button briefly switches between
the operational modes 'preset select' and 'manual
tuning' (see also the description of the buttons

).
• If you hold the
button pressed in for longer,
you gain access to another (less frequently needed)
menu which controls the display; see the section
entitled 'Display Functions'.

Pressing the
button briefly switches toggles

Selecting a preset:
Press the
button to select the operating mode
"preset select".
Now you can press the buttons
and
to
run up and down respectively through the stored presets.
The tuner automatically skips any vacant memory spots.
If you hold a tuning button pressed in for a longer period
(approx. 1 second), the tuner initiates a station search in
the downward or upward direction, according to the
button selected. The search stops automatically at the
next station broadcasting a strong signal, and tunes it in
accurately.
If you release the tuning button at this point, then the
tuner stays on this station. If you press and hold again,
the search resumes after about a second.
The search can be interrupted at any time by briefly
pressing the other tuning button (opposite direction).
Pressing any tuning button briefly activates the preset
you were listening to most recently.
Manual tuning:
Press the
button briefly to select the operating
mode 'manual tuning'.
Manual tuning is achieved by pressing either of the
tuning buttons; each brief press of the button increases
or decreases the reception frequency by 25 kHz.
This facility allows you to tune in a station very accurately
when reception conditions are very difficult, or the station
is very weak.
You can check the accuracy of tuning using the tuning
indicator on the left-hand side of the display. The station
is tuned in correctly when the cross symbol is in the
centre position; it will now be received as well as
possible.
If you hold a tuning button pressed in for longer (approx.
1 second), then the tuner initiates a station search in the
downward or upward direction respectively (as described
above).
