Overview

This document provides installation instructions for the OXBOX J4AH4P Series High Efficiency Air Handlers, designed for 1.5-5 ton systems and compatible with R410A or R22 refrigerants.

Function Description

The OXBOX J4AH4P Series Air Handler is a multi-speed blower motor unit designed for residential heating and air conditioning systems. It functions as the indoor component of a split system, circulating treated air throughout the building. The unit is designed for multi-position installation, supporting upflow, horizontal right (standard), and field-convertible horizontal left or downflow configurations, offering flexibility for various installation requirements.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Capacity: 1.5 to 5 tons.
  • Refrigerant Compatibility: R410A or R22.
  • Motor: Multi-speed blower motor.
  • Electrical Connections: Multiple electrical entry locations are provided, with high voltage knockouts (7/8", 1-3/8", 1-3/4" diameter) and low voltage knockouts (5/8", 7/8").
  • Electric Heater Kits: Field-installed electric heater kits are available as accessories in 5, 7.5, 10, 15, and 20 kW options.
  • Cabinet Leakage Rate: Factory-sealed cabinet certified to achieve 2% or less air leakage rate at 1.0 inch water column.
  • Drain Pans: Horizontal and vertical condensate drain pans are standard, made of polymer with UVC inhibitor. Primary and secondary condensate drain fittings are included (3/4" female pipe thread NPT).
  • Filter Rack: Integrated filter rack with tool-less door access.
  • Certifications: AHRI and ETL listed.
  • Dimensions (H x W x D):
    • 1.5 Ton (Model 18): 41-3/8" x 18-1/8" x 20-1/2" (1050 x 460 x 520 mm)
    • 2-3 Ton (Models 24, 30, 36): 46-1/2" x 19-5/8" x 21-5/8" (1180 x 500 x 550 mm)
    • 3.5-5 Ton (Models 42, 48, 60): 54-1/2" x 22" x 24" (1385 x 560 x 610 mm)
  • Supply Duct "A" Dimensions:
    • 1.5 Ton (Model 18): 16" (406 mm)
    • 2-3 Ton (Models 24, 30, 36): 18" (456 mm)
    • 3.5-5 Ton (Models 42, 48, 60): 19-1/2" (496 mm)
  • Piston Metering Device: Factory-installed piston metering device, with specific sizes varying by model and outdoor unit combination. TXV kits are optional for certain system combinations.

Usage Features

  • Multi-position Installation: The unit can be installed in upflow (bottom return), horizontal right (standard), horizontal left, or downflow (top return) configurations. Conversion to horizontal left or downflow involves reorienting the indoor coil assembly.
  • Ease of Maintenance: Features a dual front panel design, and both the blower and coil assemblies can slide out for simplified maintenance.
  • Electrical Wiring: Top and side power and control wiring options are available, with accessible screw terminals for control wiring. It is crucial to ensure proper grounding and compliance with national, state, and local electrical codes.
  • Refrigerant Connections: Coil connections are sealed until refrigerant lines are brazed. Nitrogen flow is recommended during brazing to prevent oxidation.
  • Condensate Drainage: The unit must be installed in a level position, with a slight pitch towards the primary drain connection (up to 1½" rise over width/depth) to ensure proper drainage. A 3-inch trap is required in the primary drain line. An auxiliary drain line should be run to a noticeable location to alert homeowners of potential issues.
  • Air Filter: An external air filter (not factory-installed) is required. The unit includes an integrated filter rack with tool-less door access. Filter dimensions vary by model.
  • Airflow Performance: Airflow performance data is provided for cooling with a wet coil and no filter, allowing selection of appropriate air volume for different applications. Heat pump systems require specific airflow (350-450 CFM/ton, nominally 400 CFM).

Maintenance Features

  • Blower and Coil Access: The blower and coil are designed to easily slide out, facilitating inspection and cleaning.
  • Filter Replacement/Cleaning: The integrated filter rack allows for tool-less access. Filters should be cleaned or replaced regularly. Instructions are provided for manual removal of bolts, filter cover, and the filter itself, followed by cleaning with a vacuum cleaner or pure water and mild detergent if heavily soiled.
  • Condensate Drain Maintenance: Provisions for disconnecting and cleaning the primary drain line should be made. Regular checks for proper drainage and leaks are essential.
  • Motor Fix Status: Before operation, it is important to check that the blower motor support is tight (3-motor mount bolts) and the wheel is secured to the motor shaft.
  • Wiring Inspection: Periodically check all wires and lugs to ensure they are secure and tight, matching the unit wiring diagram.
  • Clearance: A 25-inch clearance is required in front of the unit for filter and coil maintenance. Adequate space (≥40" on sides for horizontal, ≥25" in front for vertical) must be maintained for installation and maintenance.
