Troubleshooting: Electronic Rat Trap (M241)
Troubleshooting
Have you encountered an issue with your Victor® Electronic Rat Trap, or just
want to learn more about it? Our convenient troubleshooting section will walk you
through the most common customer questions to ensure successful trapping.
Where do I place my trap?
What kind of bait should I use?
How do I know if my trap is working?
What is the output voltage of the trap?
Is it safe for children or pets?
What might cause the trap NOT to work?
How long will the batteries last?
Where do I place my trap?
Electronic traps are for indoor use only. Place the trap on a flat surface against a
wall where you have seen signs of rodent activity. The trap should be placed
lengthwise with the rodent entrance nearest to the wall. Be sure that the area is free
of dust and debris.
Can I use my trap outdoors?
No, an electronic trap cannot be used outdoors. It uses batteries and electronic
components that cannot be exposed to the elements. Placing the trap outdoors will
interfere with the functionality of the trap, causing it not to work.
What kind of bait should I use?
Rodents prefer foods that are high in protein and fat. Try using peanut butter,
hazelnut spread, chocolate and meats such as bacon or beef jerky. Be careful not to
use too much. Rodents have a very strong sense of smell, so only a small amount
of bait is needed to attract them to the trap. Do not overfill the bait cup.

Overview

The Victor® Electronic Rat Trap (M241) is an indoor-use electronic device designed for rodent elimination. It operates by delivering a high-voltage electrical shock to kill rats, providing a humane and effective solution for rodent control.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Victor® Electronic Rat Trap is to detect and electrocute rodents. When a rodent enters the trap, it completes an electrical circuit, triggering a high-voltage shock that quickly and humanely kills the animal. The trap is designed for indoor use only, specifically in areas where signs of rodent activity have been observed. It should be placed on a flat surface, lengthwise against a wall, with the rodent entrance facing the wall. This positioning optimizes the trap's effectiveness by aligning it with common rodent travel paths. The trap is armed by turning it OFF and then ON again, indicated by a single green light flash and a buzz, confirming it is ready for use. A continuous indicator light is not used to conserve battery life.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Victor® Electronic Rat Trap delivers a powerful 6,000 volts of electricity per shock, ensuring a quick and effective kill. It is powered by four "C" batteries. A new set of batteries can last approximately 3 years on standby if no rodents are caught. However, if rodents are caught, the same set of batteries can kill up to 50 rats. Battery life can be significantly reduced if a caught rodent remains in the trap unchecked, as the indicator light will blink constantly, leading to battery drain within 2-4 weeks. The trap is not designed for outdoor use due to its electronic components and battery operation, which are susceptible to damage from environmental elements.

Usage Features:

  • Baiting: Rodents are attracted to foods high in protein and fat. Recommended baits include peanut butter, hazelnut spread, chocolate, bacon, or beef jerky. It is crucial to use only a small amount of bait, as rodents have a strong sense of smell. Overfilling the bait cup should be avoided. To prevent transferring human scent to the bait, which can deter rodents, a cotton swab, toothpick, or tweezers should be used to place the bait through the bait door located on the back of the trap. Before baiting, the trap must be powered OFF, and batteries should be removed.
  • Placement: The trap is strictly for indoor use. It should be positioned on a flat, dry surface against a wall, with the rodent entrance closest to the wall. The area around the trap should be free of dust and debris to ensure proper functionality.
  • Safety: The trap features an open tunnel design and is not recommended for use around children or pets due to the high voltage it delivers.
  • Indicator: A single green light flash and a buzz confirm that the trap is armed and ready for use. There is no continuous indicator light to preserve battery life.
  • Disposal: After a rodent is caught, the unit should be turned OFF, and the batteries removed. The rodent can then be properly discarded. The trap should be cleaned and re-baited after each use for optimal performance.
  • Battery Life Management: To maximize battery life, it's important to check the trap regularly. If a rodent is caught, promptly dispose of it and reset the trap to prevent the indicator light from continuously blinking and draining the batteries.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining the trap's effectiveness. After each use, the trap should be turned OFF, and batteries removed. The kill chamber can be cleaned using a hydrogen peroxide topical solution and an old toothbrush. For stubborn corrosion, a wire brush can be used gently, taking care not to remove the protective zinc plating. The interior and exterior of the kill chamber must be thoroughly dried before reassembly.
  • Reassembly: To reassemble the trap after cleaning, hold the base with one hand and slide the top forward with the other hand until the pieces reconnect.
  • Troubleshooting Common Issues:
    • Trap Not Working: This can be caused by old or improperly inserted batteries. Always use a new set of fully charged batteries and ensure they are inserted with the correct polarity.
    • Bait Placement: Placing bait directly on the metal plates can interfere with the trap's operation. If this occurs, power OFF the trap, remove batteries, and clean the inside.
    • Debris Buildup and Corrosion: Extended use can lead to the buildup of debris, residue, or corrosion on the metal plates. Regular cleaning after each use is recommended to prevent these issues.
    • Water Damage: The trap is designed for dry indoor environments. Water damage from outdoor use or damp/wet indoor areas can impair functionality. If the trap gets wet, power it OFF, remove batteries, and allow it to dry completely before attempting to reuse it.
    • Battery Drain: A caught rodent left in the trap will cause the indicator light to blink continuously, significantly draining the batteries. Prompt disposal and resetting are crucial for battery longevity.

The Victor® Electronic Rat Trap (M241) is a user-friendly and effective tool for managing indoor rat infestations, provided proper placement, baiting, and regular maintenance are observed.
