Starting
Make a habit of visually checking the engine, engine bay and transmission before start. This will help you to
discover quickly if anything abnormal has happened, or is about to happen. Also check that instruments and
warning displays show normal values when you have started the engine.
To minimize cold start smoke we recommend the installation of an engine heater or engine bay heater if temper-
atures below +5°C (41°F) are encountered.
WARNING!
Never use start spray or similar agents to start an engine. This may cause an explosion in the inlet manifold.
Danger of personal injury.
Before Starting
IMPORTANT!
Make sure you know how to stop the engine before
starting it (in case of emergency). If the engine is
started for the first time, have someone stand-by at the
at the emergency stop button to stop the engine in case
abnormal noise should occur during start up. Block air
intake in case of stop button malfunction. This has to
be prepared in advance.
WARNING!
Before starting the engine make sure people and tools
are out of contact with moving parts of the engine.
Notify people in the vicinity of the engine when starting.
General information about starting
The engine control lever must always be in neutral
before starting. The engine management system
ensures that the engine receives the correct amount of
fuel – even when the engine is cold.
The engine is pre-heated by the engine control unit,
which allows the engine to crank several revolutions
with the starter motor before fuel is injected. The colder
the engine is, the more revolutions the engine makes.
This raises the temperature in the combustion cham-
bers, which ensures reliable starting and reduces start-
ing smoke.
The idling speed is also governed by engine tempera-
ture, and is somewhat raised after a cold start.
