Overview

This document is an installation and owner's guide for the VOXX Electronics Corporation ACA800 Backup Camera.

Function Description:

The ACA800 is a wired backup camera designed to assist in safe driving by providing a broader rear view when the vehicle is in reverse. It integrates with the vehicle's rear license plate without obstructing it, or can be surface mounted using an included universal bracket. The camera is compatible with most monitors/TFT screens and connects via a standard RCA connector. The system includes features for adjusting parking lines and mirroring the image.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Connection: The camera requires a RED wire for the Reverse Trigger Wire (+) and a BLACK wire for Ground (-).
  • Video Output: Standard RCA connector for compatibility with most monitors/TFT screens.
  • Wiring: The camera uses a Y-Harness with specific loops for feature adjustments:
    • GREEN loop: Cut to remove parking lines.
    • BLUE loop: Cut for reverse image mirroring (horizontal, Left to Right axis).
  • Mounting Hole Size (for drilling):
    • License Plate Mounting: 5/16 inch hole.
    • Surface Mounting: 5/8 inch hole.
  • Warranty: 1-year limited warranty on control modules and sensors (including the camera itself). Transmitters are also warranted for 12 months.

Usage Features:

  • Backup Assistance: Provides a visual aid for the driver when the vehicle is in reverse, enhancing safety and visibility.
  • Parking Line Adjustment: The camera can display parking grid lines, which can be removed by cutting the GREEN loop on the Y-Harness if not desired.
  • Reverse Image Functionality: The camera can be mounted on the front or rear of the vehicle. If the image needs to be reversed (mirrored horizontally), cutting the BLUE loop on the Y-Harness will achieve this.
  • Automatic Activation: When connected to the monitor's camera input, the display will automatically turn on when the vehicle's reverse gear is engaged.

Installation and Mounting Options:

The ACA800 offers two primary mounting options:

  1. License Plate Mounting:
    • The camera bracket is designed to be placed behind the rear license plate.
    • The camera can be positioned either above or below the license plate. If mounting below, the camera must be flipped over by removing a screw to ensure the image is displayed correctly (not upside down).
    • Anti-theft screws are provided for securing the camera bracket and license plate to the vehicle.
    • Wiring involves routing the camera cable into the vehicle, ideally through an existing grommet, behind a tail lamp, or under trunk molding. If necessary, a 5/16 inch hole can be drilled, which should be coated with rust preventative, and a grommet inserted to prevent water entry.
  2. Surface Mounting:
    • A universal surface mount bracket is included for alternative mounting locations.
    • Requires finding a suitable location on the vehicle that does not interfere with equipment, doors, or line of sight, and allows access for wiring.
    • The surface mounting bracket is attached to the vehicle with provided hardware.
    • The camera is detached from the license plate bracket and then attached to the surface mount bracket.
    • Wiring involves routing the cable into the vehicle, similar to license plate mounting, but if drilling is required, a 5/8 inch hole is specified.

Camera Wiring (Electrical):

  • Reverse Trigger Wire: Locate the reverse lamp in the tail light assembly. Use a Digital Multi-Meter to find the reverse trigger wire, which will show Ground (-) at rest and 12-Volt (+) when the vehicle is in reverse gear. Connect the RED camera power wire to this reverse trigger wire.
  • Ground Connection: Connect the BLACK Ground (-) wire to the vehicle's chassis ground.
  • Note on Power Supply: Some vehicles may not supply sufficient current to power both the reverse light and the backup camera, potentially requiring an additional relay and wiring.

Video Signal Connection:

  • Route the supplied video cable from the rear of the vehicle to the display monitor, ensuring it does not obstruct any airbag or safety features.
  • Connect the camera video cable to the monitor's camera input.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: Users are advised to regularly inspect all components and cabling for damage.
  • Careful Handling: Handle all components with care to prevent damage, as excessive force can void warranties.
  • Proper Installation: Adherence to the installation manual's procedures is crucial; improper installation or modification will void all warranties.
  • Rust Prevention: If drilling holes for wiring, coat the edges with rust preventative to protect against corrosion.
  • Water Sealing: Ensure grommets are properly inserted into drilled holes to prevent water from entering the vehicle.

Safety Precautions:

  • The product is intended to assist in safe driving, but the driver remains solely responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle and the safety of passengers, in accordance with local traffic regulations.
  • Avoid using features that distract from safe driving.
  • The product utilizes high voltage; unauthorized modifications or damage can result in electrical shock.
  • Verify that installation does not void or affect the vehicle manufacturer's warranty. VOXX Electronics Corporation is not liable for issues arising from improper installation.
  • Do not apply excessive force to components, as this can cause damage and void warranties.
