Overview

This document is an owner's manual and safety instructions for a Warrior 4-1/2" Angle Grinder, model 58089. The manual provides comprehensive information on the device's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Warrior 4-1/2" Angle Grinder is a power tool designed to function as a grinder, sander, or wire brush. It is intended for operations such as grinding, sanding, and wire brushing, but polishing or cutting-off operations are not recommended. The tool operates by rotating an accessory (such as a grinding wheel, sanding disc, or wire brush) at high speed to perform material removal tasks. The design incorporates a Wheel Guard for safety, an Auxiliary Handle for improved control, and a Spindle Lock Button for easy accessory changes. The motor's fan draws dust inside the housing, and regular cleaning of air vents is crucial to prevent electrical hazards from powdered metal accumulation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Rating: 120VAC / 60Hz / 4.3A
  • Motor No Load Speed: 12,000 RPM
  • Max. Accessory Diameter (sold separately): 4-1/2" (115 mm)
  • Max. Accessory Thickness: 1/4"
  • Arbor Hole Diameter: 7/8"
  • Spindle Thread: 5/8" x 11 TPI

Usage Features:

The angle grinder is designed for ease of use with several features:

  • Auxiliary Handle: Can be installed in one of two positions (either side of the Gear Housing) to provide maximum control and resist kickback forces. It must be securely tightened before use.
  • Wheel Guard: Adjustable and securely attached to the power tool, positioned for maximum safety to expose the least amount of the wheel towards the operator. It protects against broken wheel fragments and accidental contact.
  • Spindle Lock Button: Used to prevent the spindle from turning during accessory installation or removal.
  • Switch: A slide switch with a safety release mechanism. The user presses down to release the safety, then slides the switch up to start the tool. To stop, the user presses down on the back of the switch and releases it.
  • Accessory Compatibility: Supports non-threaded grinding wheels (rated to at least 12,000 RPM, no larger than 4-1/2" in diameter, 7/8" arbor hole, 1/4" thick or less, suitable for surface grinding, dry, clean, and undamaged) and threaded accessories (rated to at least 12,000 RPM, no larger than 4-1/2" in diameter, 5/8" x 11 TPI threaded opening, undamaged, such as sanding discs with backing pads, sanding flap discs, wire wheels, or wire cup brushes).
  • Outer Flange: Features a step for improved stability with thick accessories (step on the inside) and can be flipped for thin accessories (step on the outside) to ensure proper clamping.
  • Operating Angle: For grinding, the wheel should be applied to the work material at a 10°-15° angle, allowing the tool to operate at full speed. Lighter pressure should be used if the tool bogs down.
  • Work Area Setup: Requires a clean, well-lit work area free of children, pets, hazardous objects, and utility lines. The power cord should be routed safely to prevent tripping hazards. Workpieces must be secured with clamps or a vise.

Safety Features:

The manual emphasizes numerous safety warnings and precautions:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Users must wear ANSI-approved eye protection (safety goggles with side shields or face shield), NIOSH-approved breathing protection (dust mask/respirator), hearing protectors, gloves, and a workshop apron. Leather leggings and fire-resistant footwear are recommended for grinding operations.
  • Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) in damp locations. Do not abuse the power cord. Use appropriate extension cords (refer to Table A for minimum wire gauge based on amperes and length).
  • Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip, use the auxiliary handle, keep hands away from rotating accessories, and position the body to resist kickback forces. Avoid working corners, sharp edges, or bouncing, as these can cause snagging and kickback. Do not attach saw chain woodcarving blades or toothed saw blades.
  • Accessory Safety: Only use accessories specifically designed and recommended by the manufacturer, with a rated speed equal to or greater than the tool's maximum speed. Accessory diameter and thickness must be within the tool's capacity. Arbor holes must properly fit the spindle. Inspect accessories for damage before each use and run the tool at maximum no-load speed for one minute after installation. Do not use worn or damaged wheels. Do not grind with the side of the wheel.
  • Vibration Safety: This tool vibrates during use. Prolonged exposure can cause temporary or permanent physical injury. Recommendations include medical check-ups for regular users, avoiding use by pregnant women or individuals with impaired blood circulation/nervous system disorders, wearing suitable gloves, using tools with lowest vibration, including vibration-free periods, and gripping lightly.
  • General Power Tool Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate in explosive atmospheres. Keep children and bystanders away. Stay alert and use common sense. Prevent unintentional starting by ensuring the switch is off before connecting to power. Remove adjusting keys/wrenches before turning on. Do not overreach. Dress properly, keeping loose clothing and jewelry away from moving parts. Use dust extraction facilities if provided. Store idle power tools out of reach of children.
  • Pacemaker Safety: Individuals with pacemakers should consult their physician before use, avoid operating alone, avoid using with the power switch locked on, properly maintain and inspect the tool, and properly ground the power cord (GFCI recommended).

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the tool for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, or any other condition affecting safe operation.
  • Post-Use Cleaning: After use, wipe external surfaces of the tool with a clean cloth.
  • Motor Vent Cleaning: Periodically blow dust and grit out of the motor vents using dry compressed air while wearing ANSI-approved safety goggles and NIOSH-approved breathing protection.
  • Carbon Brush Maintenance: Carbon brushes may require maintenance if motor performance decreases or stops. This should be performed by a qualified service technician.
  • Cord Replacement: If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified service technician.
  • Accessory Storage: Handle accessories carefully to prevent dropping or bumping. Store accessories in shelves, racks, boxes, or drawers in a dry area, above freezing. Grinding wheels exposed to humidity or freezing temperatures must not be used.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided for common issues such as the tool not starting, operating slowly, decreased performance, excessive noise/rattling, overheating, or ineffective grinding/sanding/brushing. Solutions range from checking connections and circuit breakers to having the tool serviced by a qualified technician.
  • General Maintenance: All repairs and parts replacements should be undertaken by certified and licensed technicians. The buyer assumes all risk and liability for repairs or replacement parts.

The manual also includes a detailed parts list and assembly diagram for reference, though individual replacement parts may not be available for all listed components. It emphasizes saving the manual and receipt for future reference and contacting Harbor Freight Tools for technical support or replacement parts.
