Why is the ice quality poor in my Welbilt Ice Maker?

  If your Welbilt Ice Maker produces ice that is soft or not clear, several factors could be the cause. It might be due to poor incoming water quality, in which case you should contact a qualified service company to test the water and recommend appropriate filters. Poor water filtration could also be the issue, so try replacing the filter. A dirty ice machine can also affect ice quality, so make sure to clean and sanitize it. Lastly, if you have a water softener, check to see if it is working correctly and repair it if necessary.

Ensure the ice machine is level. Also, if you have an air-cooled model, check that the air temperature around the machine is at least 40°F (4°C). For water-cooled models, a leaking water regulating valve in harvest mode could be the problem, and you may need to replace it.

  If your Welbilt Ice Maker produces shallow or incomplete cubes, or the ice fill pattern on the evaporator is incomplete, start by adjusting the ice thickness switch. Check that the water trough level is neither too high nor too low. Replace the water filter if water filtration is poor. Ensure that the incoming water is cold and that the water pressure is between 20 – 80 psi (137.9 – 551.5 kPa). Finally, make sure the ice machine is level.

  If your Welbilt Ice Maker does not operate, there might be a simple explanation. First, check if there is electrical power reaching the machine. Replace the fuse, reset the breaker, turn on the main switch, and ensure the power cord is plugged into the receptacle. Also, make sure the ice machine is turned on by pressing the On/Off button. Finally, check that the damper is in the upright position and can swing freely.

  If the ice sheet in your Welbilt Ice Maker is too thick, it could be due to a water trough level that is too high; in this case, adjust the ice thickness float. Another cause could be that the power button was turned off/on during the freeze cycle and ice remained on the evaporator. Allow the ice to thaw and release from the evaporator, then restart. Also, if the ice damper was opened then closed in the harvest cycle before the ice released, allow ice to thaw and release from evaporator, then restart. If you are experiencing long harvest cycles with repeated safety limit indication, call for service.

  If your Welbilt Ice Maker does not cycle into harvest mode, it could be due to several reasons. The six-minute freeze time lock-in might not have expired yet, so wait for it to expire. Also, the harvest float switch could be dirty, so clean and sanitize the ice machine. Check if the harvest float switch wire is disconnected and connect it if necessary. The harvest float switch might also be out of adjustment, so adjust it. Finally, uneven ice fill (thin at top of evaporator) may be the reason. See “Shallow or Incomplete Cubes”.
