Overview

The WEN 18-Gauge 1/4" Narrow Crown Stapler, Model 61711, is a pneumatic tool designed for various fastening tasks, including installing trim and building birdhouses. It operates on compressed air and is engineered for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety.

Function Description:

This narrow crown stapler is used to drive 18-gauge, 1/4" narrow-crown staples ranging from 3/8" to 1" in length into workpieces. It utilizes compressed air to actuate a piston assembly, which in turn drives the staple. The tool features a magazine for holding staples, a trigger for firing, a contact tip for placement, and a jam-clearing latch for easy maintenance. It is designed for household use and is not intended for industrial or professional applications.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 61711
  • Operating Pressure Range: 60 - 100 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch)
  • Air Inlet: 1/4" NPT (National Pipe Taper)
  • Staple Length: 3/8" - 1"
  • Staple Width: 1/4" Crown
  • Staple Size: 18-Gauge
  • Magazine Capacity: 100 Staples
  • Weight: 2.8 lbs

Usage Features:

  • Loading Fasteners: Staples are loaded into the magazine by pressing a lock, pulling the movable magazine out, inserting up to 100 staples, and then pushing the magazine forward until it clicks shut. The tool is designed to work with 18-gauge 1/4” narrow-crown staples.
  • Connecting to Air Supply: The stapler connects to a properly installed compressed air supply. The air compressor's working pressure must be regulated to fit the stapler's operating pressure (60 – 100 PSI). Recommended accessories for connection include a quick connector, quick coupler, regulator, lubricator, and filter.
  • Firing Fasteners: To fire a fastener, the stapler is held upright on the workpiece with the contact tip positioned where the fastener will be driven. The trigger is then pulled to drive the fastener. The trigger must be released, and the tool lifted and repositioned for subsequent fasteners. The contact trip mechanism means a staple will fire each time the trigger is pressed as long as the contact trip remains activated, which could lead to inadvertent actuation if not handled carefully.
  • Jam Clearing: In the event of a staple jam in the nosepiece, the tool must first be disconnected from the air supply, and all other fasteners removed from the magazine. The jam-clearing latch is then opened to access the front plate, allowing removal of the jammed fastener. If the piston assembly is in the down position, it can be pushed back into position with a screwdriver or rod. After clearing, the front plate is closed, and the tool is tested with scrap wood.
  • Pressure Adjustment: The tool pressure regulator on the air compressor can be adjusted to control the firing depth, fastener length, and accommodate different workpiece hardness levels.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes several safety rules, including keeping the work area clean, avoiding explosive atmospheres, keeping children and bystanders away, using personal protective equipment (especially eye protection), preventing unintentional starting, and maintaining proper footing and balance. Specific warnings for the crown stapler include inspecting the tool before use, gripping it firmly with both hands, keeping face and body parts away from the tool cap, not discharging fasteners into open air or hard materials, avoiding driving fasteners near the edge of the workpiece or onto other fasteners, being aware of material thickness, and removing the finger from the trigger when not driving fasteners. It also warns against removing, tampering with, or altering the tool's trigger or safety bracket.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lubrication: Routine lubrication is crucial for performance. If an inline oiler is not used, 4-5 drops of pneumatic tool oil (non-detergent) should be placed into the air inlet at the beginning of each workday. After lubrication, the tool should be connected to the air supply, and fired 3-4 times into scrap wood to lubricate internal parts.
  • Compressor Maintenance: The air compressor's air filter should be checked, and the tank drained at least weekly, as per the compressor's owner's manual. This prevents water and contaminants from entering the stapler.
  • Cleaning: The tool should be kept clean for better and safer performance. It can be wiped with a damp towel and mild soap, blown clean with compressed air, and its exterior wiped with non-flammable cleaning solutions. Soaking the tool in cleaning solutions is not recommended as it can damage internal parts.
  • Inspection: Regular inspection of the trigger system is necessary to ensure it is complete and functional, with no loose, missing, binding, or sticking parts. Any damaged or leaking parts must be repaired or replaced. All screws should be kept tight.
  • Storage: The unit and its accessories should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free, and well-ventilated place, out of reach of children. The ideal storage temperature is between 50 to 86 °F (10 and 30 °C).
  • Product Disposal: Used pneumatic tools contain recyclable materials and should be taken to a local recycling facility for responsible disposal, rather than being disposed of with household waste.
