Overview

The WEN 4-1/2" Angle Grinder (Model #94475) is a versatile power tool designed for grinding and sanding operations, engineered to WEN's high standards for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety. This manual emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding all safety warnings and instructions to ensure safe and reliable performance.

Function Description:

The WEN Angle Grinder is primarily intended for preparing surfaces for welding, grinding welds, grinding structural steel, and grinding stainless steel. It functions as both a grinder and a sander, making it suitable for a range of tasks requiring material removal or surface finishing. The tool is designed for home use, offering rugged, trouble-free performance when properly cared for and used for its intended purpose.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 94475
  • Motor: AC 120V, 60 Hz, 7.5A
  • Rated Speed: 11,000 RPM
  • Grinding Wheel Diameter: 4-1/2 inches (115 mm)
  • Grinding Wheel Arbor Size: 7/8 inches (22.2 mm)
  • Spindle Shaft Diameter: 5/8 inches - 11UMC
  • Power Cord Length: 6.5 ft.
  • Product Dimensions: 11 x 8.5 x 3.9 inches
  • Product Weight: 4 lbs
  • Double-Insulated: The tool features a double-insulated electrical system, eliminating the need for a three-wire grounded power cord and isolating exposed metal parts from internal motor components with protective insulation.
  • Replacement Parts: Replacement grinding wheels (Part No. 94475B), outer flanges (94475-001), inner flanges (94475-0013), and carbon brushes (94475-032) are available from wenproducts.com.

Usage Features:

  • Work Area Safety: Users are advised to keep the work area clean and well lit, avoid operating in explosive atmospheres, and keep children and bystanders away to prevent distractions.
  • Electrical Safety: The tool uses a polarized plug, and users are cautioned against modifying it. GFCI protection is recommended for circuits or outlets used with the tool. Guidelines for extension cords specify using a heavy enough cord (e.g., 18 gauge for 25 ft, 16 gauge for 50 ft, 14 gauge for 100 ft, 12 gauge for 150 ft at 7.5A) to prevent power loss and overheating.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear ANSI Z87.1-approved eye protection with side shields, hearing protection, and a dust mask. Loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair should be secured away from moving parts. Maintain proper footing and balance, and avoid operating the tool while tired or under the influence of substances.
  • Kickback Reduction: To minimize kickback, maintain a firm grip on the tool, always use the auxiliary handle, and avoid placing hands near rotating accessories. Special care should be taken when working corners or sharp edges to prevent snagging.
  • Vibration Safety: The manual acknowledges that the tool vibrates during use and advises users to take precautions to reduce the risk of vibration-related injuries, such as seeking medical advice if symptoms occur, avoiding smoking during use, wearing suitable gloves, taking vibration-free breaks, and maintaining the tool.
  • Side Handle: The reversible side handle can be threaded into mounting holes on either side of the tool, providing guidance and balance for safe operation. It is crucial to hold the tool with both hands during operation to prevent loss of control.
  • Wheel Guard: The wheel guard (Fig. 2 - 1) protects the operator from broken wheel fragments and accidental contact. It must be securely attached and positioned to expose the least amount of the wheel towards the operator. The guard's position can be adjusted by loosening a Phillips-head screw (Fig. 2 - 2) and rotating it. The guard opening should never be directed toward the user's body.
  • Grinding Wheel Selection: Grinding wheels must be suitable for the operation and material, have a safe operating speed equal to or higher than 11,000 RPM, an outer diameter of 4-1/2 inches, an arbor size of 7/8 inches, and a thickness not exceeding 1/4 inch.
  • Grinding Wheel Assembly: The process involves placing the inner flange (Fig. 4 - 2) onto the spindle, sliding the grinding wheel (Fig. 4 - 3) onto the spindle (matching direction arrows), screwing the outer flange (Fig. 4 - 4) into place, and tightening it with the supplied lock nut wrench (Fig. 4 - 5) while pressing the spindle lock (Fig. 4 - 1).
  • ON/OFF Switch: The ON/OFF switch (Fig. 6 - 1) is pushed forward to turn the tool ON and lock it. Pressing down on the outermost tip and sliding it back turns the tool OFF. Users are warned not to turn the grinder ON or OFF while under load to prolong tool life.
  • Operation Technique: Start the angle grinder before applying it to the workpiece, allowing the wheel to reach full speed. Lift the tool from the workpiece before turning it off. Efficient grinding is achieved by maintaining an angle of 15° to 30° between the wheel and the workpiece. Moving the grinder at a steady, consistent pace is recommended, avoiding excessive or sudden pressure. New wheels have sharp corners and should be used by pulling the tool backward until the edge becomes rounded.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the tool for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, damaged cord/electrical wiring, cracked or broken parts, and any other condition that might affect safe operation.
  • Cleaning: After every use, wipe the tool with a soft cloth, ensuring no water enters the tool. Keep ventilation openings free from dust and debris to prevent motor overheating. Avoid using commercial solvents like gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, or household detergents containing ammonia, as they can damage plastic parts.
  • Storage: Store the tool in a clean, dry place, out of reach of children.
  • Carbon Brush Replacement: Excessive sparking or the tool stopping indicates that carbon brushes may need replacement. Inspection and replacement should be performed by a qualified service technician using genuine WEN replacement brushes (Part No. 94475-032).
  • Product Disposal: Used power tools should not be disposed of with household waste. This product contains electronic components that should be recycled at a local recycling facility to minimize environmental impact.
  • Warranty: WEN Products offers a two-year limited warranty for home use, covering defects in material or workmanship. For professional use, the warranty is 90 days. The warranty requires proof of purchase from a direct vendor of Great Lakes Technologies, LLC. Repairs and replacements should only be performed by an authorized technician.
