Overview

The WEN DW1085 Handheld Drywall Sander is a power tool designed for sanding drywall for home use. It offers dependable, easy operation and operator safety, with a focus on providing years of rugged, trouble-free performance when properly cared for and used for its intended purpose.

Function Description:

The primary function of this tool is to sand drywall surfaces. It is equipped with a rotating base pad and various grit sanding discs to achieve different finishes, from coarse sanding to fine smoothing. The integrated dust extraction system, which can be connected to a dust bag or an external dust extractor, helps manage the debris produced during operation, reducing dust-related hazards and maintaining a cleaner work environment. The tool is designed for handheld use, providing control and maneuverability for various sanding tasks.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: DW1085

  • Variable Speed: 1500 to 2300 RPM
  • Base Pad Diameter: 8.5 Inches
  • Sanding Disc Diameter: 9 Inches

  • Power Cord Length: 13.5 Feet
  • Product Dimensions: 11-7/8 in. x 8-1/2 in. x 9-3/4 in.
  • Product Weight: 6.6 Pounds
  • Double-Insulated: The tool features a double-insulated electrical system, eliminating the need for a three-wire grounded power cord.

Usage Features:

  • Variable Speed Control: A variable speed dial allows users to adjust the base pad's rotating speed between 1500 and 2300 RPM. Lower speeds are recommended for coarse sanding or cleaning plastic and water stains, while higher speeds are suitable for fine sanding to achieve a smooth finish.
  • Dust Extraction Dial: This dial enables users to adjust the suction power for the dust extraction system. Turning it clockwise increases suction, and counterclockwise decreases it.
  • Auxiliary Handle: The sander comes with an auxiliary handle that can be installed on either side of the tool, depending on user preference, to ensure a firm grip and prevent loss of control during operation.
  • Sanding Disc Attachment: Sanding discs attach to the hook and loop base pad. The tool includes 150, 180, 240, and 400 grit sanding discs to accommodate different sanding requirements. The holes in the sanding disc must align with the dust extraction hole in the base pad for effective dust collection.
  • Dust Collection System: The sander can be connected to an included dust bag via a 7.5-foot dust hose for dust collection. Alternatively, it can be connected to a dust extractor using one of the three provided adapters (1-1/2", 1-7/8", or 2-1/4").
  • Power Trigger and Safety Lock Button: The tool is switched ON by pressing the trigger lock button and then the trigger. The trigger lock button can be pressed again to lock the trigger ON for continuous use. To turn OFF, release the trigger or, if locked ON, press the lock button and trigger to release them.
  • Shoulder Strap: A shoulder strap is included for added convenience and to help manage the tool's weight during extended use.
  • Ergonomic Design: The design emphasizes ease of operation and control, with clear instructions on how to hold the tool firmly with both hands to resist kickback.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Inspection: Before each use, users should inspect the tool for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, damaged cord/electrical wiring, cracked or broken parts, and any other condition that might affect safe operation.
  • Cleaning: After every use, the tool should be wiped clean with a soft cloth, ensuring no water gets into the tool. It's important to avoid commercial solvents or cleaning products that could damage plastic parts.
  • Ventilation: Keep ventilation openings free from dust and debris to prevent motor overheating.
  • Storage: Store the tool in a clean, dry place out of reach of children.
  • Carbon Brush Replacement: The carbon brushes should be inspected if excessive sparks are observed during operation or if the tool stops working. If worn to under 1/8 inch in length, both carbon brushes should be replaced simultaneously with genuine WEN replacement brushes (Part No. 6362-040). This involves opening the carbon brush covers with a flat-head screwdriver.
  • Dust Bag Emptying: It is recommended to empty the dust bag after every sanding operation. This involves removing the dust hose and dust bag from the sander's dust port, holding the dust bag over a trash can, removing the clasp, emptying the bag, and then reattaching the clasp, dust hose, and dust bag.
  • Static Mitigation: To address static shocks, especially in dry, dusty environments, several measures are suggested: wearing rubber gloves, using a humidifier in the work area, increasing ventilation, purchasing an anti-static hose for the dust collector, or using anti-static tinsel or a bare wire wrapped around the dust hose attached to a ground point.
  • Professional Servicing: Any servicing or repairs, particularly for double-insulated products, must be performed by a qualified service technician using identical replacement parts to ensure safety and maintain the tool's integrity.
  • Product Disposal: Used power tools, especially those containing electronic components, should be recycled at a local recycling facility to minimize environmental impact and should not be disposed of with household waste.
