Overview

The Wenglor P1KHxxx series comprises reflex sensors with background suppression, designed for reliable object detection across various industrial applications. These sensors operate on the principle of angular measurement, which minimizes the influence of an object's color, shape, and surface characteristics on the detection range. This allows for the dependable detection of even dark objects against bright backgrounds. The output of the sensor switches as soon as an object enters the selected detection range.

Function Description:

The P1KHxxx reflex sensors utilize a light emitter and receiver to detect objects by analyzing the reflected light. The background suppression feature ensures that only objects within a specified adjustable range are detected, effectively ignoring any background elements beyond this range. This is achieved through an angular measurement principle, where the angle of the reflected light determines whether an object is within the set switching distance.

For object detection directly in front of a background or undersurface, the sensor should be securely mounted such that the light spot strikes the object at a right angle. The potentiometer should be turned all the way to the right. After removing the object, the potentiometer is slowly turned back until the output switches, thereby suppressing the background or undersurface. The object is then reintroduced to verify activation.

For detecting objects without an interfering background, the sensor is mounted with the spot striking the object at a right angle. The potentiometer is turned all the way to the left, then slowly turned up until activation occurs. For increased switching reliability, it can be turned up a bit further.

The sensors are equipped with status indicators: a switching status indicator/contamination warning (LED 30) and a supply power indicator (LED 68). These LEDs provide visual feedback on the sensor's operational status and potential issues.

Important Technical Specifications:

The P1KHxxx series offers various models with different ranges and adjustable ranges.

  • Ranges: 150 mm (adjustable from 30-150 mm) and 300 mm (adjustable from 30-300 mm). Some models also offer 120 mm (adjustable from 30-120 mm).
  • Light Source: Red Light or Blue Light, with some models featuring Laser (red).
  • Laser Class: Class 1 or Class 2 (EN 60825-1:2014), depending on the model. For Class 2 lasers, enclosed laser warning labels must be attached and visible.
  • Spot Diameter: Varies by model and range, e.g., 5 mm at 50 mm, 7 mm at 100 mm, 10 mm at 150 mm for 150 mm range sensors; 8 mm at 30 mm, 7 mm at 130 mm, 18 mm at 300 mm for 300 mm range sensors.
  • Switching Hysteresis: Typically <10% or <5%, depending on the model.
  • Current Consumption: Generally <20 mA or <15 mA.
  • Switching Frequency: 1000 Hz (0.5 ms response time) in standard mode, and 500 Hz (1 ms response time) in interference-free mode.
  • Supply Power: 10-30 V DC (IO-Link supply voltage 18-30 V DC).
  • Temperature Range: -40 to 60 °C.
  • Temperature Drift: Typically <5%, but can be up to <13% depending on the ambient temperature for specific models (P1KH010-P1KH012).
  • Output Function: Available with PNP or NPN outputs, and options for NC, NO antivalent, NO, or NC.
  • Interface: IO-Link (version 1.1) is available on some models, allowing for advanced settings and diagnostics via software like wTeach2.
  • Protection Class: III.
  • Degree of Protection: IP67/IP68, ensuring resistance to dust and water ingress.
  • Housing Material: Plastic.
  • Lens Cover: PMMA.
  • Service Life: 100,000 hours at +25 °C ambient temperature.
  • Max. Permissible Ambient Light: 10,000 Lux.

Usage Features:

The P1KHxxx sensors are versatile and suitable for a wide range of industrial sectors, including:

  • Special machinery manufacturing
  • Consumer goods industry
  • Heavy machinery manufacturing
  • Paper industry
  • Logistics
  • Electronics industry
  • Automotive industry
  • Glass industry
  • Food industry
  • Steel industry
  • Packaging industry
  • Aviation industry
  • Pharmaceuticals industry
  • Chemicals industry
  • Plastics industry
  • Alternative energy
  • Woodworking industry
  • Raw materials extraction

The sensors are not safety components according to 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive) and are not suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. They should only be used with accessories supplied or approved by Wenglor.

Control Panel:

The sensors feature a potentiometer (05) for adjusting the switching distance. LEDs indicate the switching status/contamination warning (30) and supply power (68).

Diagnostics:

The sensor provides diagnostic feedback through the blinking patterns of its LEDs.

  • Continuous blinking at approx. 2.5 Hz: Indicates contamination, an aged emitter diode, or an unreliable working range.
    • Contamination can be resolved by cleaning the optic cover.
    • An aged emitter diode requires sensor replacement.
    • An unreliable working range can be addressed by increasing the sensor's switching distance or reducing the distance between the sensor and the object.
  • Continuous blinking at approx. 5 Hz: Indicates a short-circuit, over-temperature, or a hardware error.
    • A short-circuit requires checking and eliminating the electrical wiring issue.
    • Over-temperature requires disconnecting the sensor from power and allowing it to cool.
    • A hardware error requires sensor replacement.

In case of fault, the machine should be shut down, the cause of error analyzed and eliminated. If the error persists or cannot be unequivocally clarified, Wenglor's support department should be contacted.

Maintenance Features:

The Wenglor P1KHxxx sensor is generally maintenance-free. However, the following points are advisable:

  • Regular cleaning and inspection of plug connections.
  • Do not clean the sensor with solvents or cleansers that could damage the product.
  • Protect the product from contamination during initial start-up.

Proper disposal of unusable or irreparable products must comply with national waste disposal regulations. Wenglor sensoric GmbH does not accept returns of such products.
