REMOVING OLD THERMOSTAT
Before removing wires from old thermostat’s switching subbase,
label each wire with the terminal designation it was removed from.
1. Remove Old Thermostat: A standard heat/cool thermostat
consists of three basic parts:
a. The cover, which may be either a snap-on or hinge type.
b. The base, which is removed by loosening all captive screws.
c. The switching subbase, which is removed by unscrewing
the mounting screws that hold it on the wall or adaptor plate.
2. Shut off electricity at the main fuse box until installation is
complete. Ensure that electrical power is disconnected.
3. Remove the front cover of the old thermostat. With wires still
attached, remove wall plate from the wall. If the old thermostat
has a wall mounting plate, remove the thermostat and the wall
mounting plate as an assembly.
4. Identify each wire attached to the old thermostat using the
labels enclosed with the new thermostat.
5. Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat one at a time. DO
NOT LET WIRES FALL BACK INTO THE WALL.
6. Install new thermostat using the following procedures.
To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment damage,
disconnect electrical power to the system at the main
fuse or circuit breaker until installation is complete.

    • B
      blakemarioAug 2, 2025
If your White Rodgers Thermostat isn't heating, cooling, or running the fan, here's what to check: * A blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker could be the culprit. Replace the fuse or reset the breaker. * Make sure the furnace power switch is turned to the 'ON' position. * Ensure the furnace blower compartment door or panel is correctly installed, engaging the safety interlock or door switch.

What to do if my White Rodgers IF78 isn't cooling?
    • B
      bergnicoleAug 11, 2025
If your White Rodgers Thermostat isn't cooling, make sure the System Switch is set to 'Cool' and the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. Also, verify that the thermostat and system wires are securely attached. If the issue persists, it may require professional service or thermostat replacement, following the same diagnostic procedure as for a 'No Heat' condition but ensuring the thermostat is set to 'Cool' and the setpoint is below room temperature.

      Sherri MartinezAug 22, 2025
If your White Rodgers Thermostat isn't heating, check the following: 1. Ensure the pilot light is lit. 2. Verify the System Switch is set to 'Heat' and the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. 3. Confirm that all connections to the thermostat and system are secure. 4. If the heat works intermittently, this could indicate a furnace lock-out condition, and you should contact the furnace manufacturer or a local service person for assistance. 5.
