REMOVING OLD THERMOSTAT
To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment dam-
age, disconnectelectricpower to systemat main fuse
or circuit breaker box until installation is complete.
Before removing wires from old thermostat's switching sub-
base, label each wire with the terminal designation it was
removed from.
1. Shut off electricity at the main fuse box until installation is
complete. Ensure that electrical power is disconnected.
2. Remove Old Thermostat: A standard heat/cool
thermostat consists of three basic parts:
a. The cover, which may be either a snap-on or
hinge type.
b. The base, which is removed by loosening all
captive screws.
c. The switching subbase, which is removed by
unscrewing the mounting screws that hold it on
the wall or adaptor plate.
3. Remove the front cover of the old thermostat. With
wires still attached, remove wall plate from the wall. If
the old thermostat has a wall mounting plate, remove the
thermostat and the wall mounting plate as an assembly.
4. Identify each wire attached to the old thermostat.
5. Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat one at a
time. DO NOT LET WIRES FALL BACK INTO THE
WALL.
6. Install new thermostat using the following procedures.

What to do if my White Rodgers 1F85-277 Thermostat has no heat?
    • N
      Nancy Black DVMAug 12, 2025
If your White Rodgers thermostat isn't producing heat, there are several potential causes: 1. The pilot light may not be lit. If this is the case, relight the pilot. 2. The SYSTEM button might not be set to HEAT. Correct this by pressing the SYSTEM button to HEAT and raising the setpoint above room temperature. 3. There may be a loose connection to the thermostat or system. Ensure that all thermostat and system wires are securely attached. 4. It's possible that the furnace is in a Lock-Out Condition. If the heat works intermittently, you should contact the furnace manufacturer or a local service person for assistance. 5. The heating system may require service, or the thermostat may need replacement. Contact a local service person for assistance.

Why does my White Rodgers 1F85-277 Thermostat heat, cool, or fan run constantly?
    • J
      Jason BowenAug 31, 2025
If your White Rodgers thermostat's heat, cool, or fan runs constantly, consider the following: 1. There might be a short in the wiring. Check each wire connection to ensure they are not shorted or touching. 2. There could be a short in the thermostat itself. Try resetting the thermostat. 3. It's also possible there's a short in the heat/cool/fan system. A system manufacturer or service person can instruct you on how to test the Heat/Cool system for correct operation. 4. The FAN switch may be set to Fan On. If so, switch to Auto mode.

What to do if my White Rodgers 1F85-277 cool setpoint will not respond to the temperature down key?
    • R
      Rebecca MccoySep 4, 2025
If the cool setpoint on your White Rodgers thermostat doesn't respond to the temperature down key, it's likely that the desired setpoint conflicts with the HEAT mode's setpoint. To fix this, change the system mode to HEAT, lower the Heat setpoint, and then return to COOL mode to set your desired temperature.
  • P
    Patricia GregorySep 7, 2025
Why does my White Rodgers 1F85-277 furnace (air conditioner) cycles too fast or too slow (narrow or wide temperature swing)?
    • M
      Mark RandallSep 7, 2025
The cycle rate of your White Rodgers thermostat may be influenced by its location and/or the size of the heating system. If an acceptable cycle rate is not achieved as received or by choosing slow cycle, contact a local service person for additional suggestions.
