FCC PART 95 Warning
This device operates on GMRS (General
Mobile Radio Service) frequencies, which
require an FCC (Federal Communications
Commission) license. You must be
licensed prior to transmitting on these
frequencies. Serious penalties could
result for unlicensed use of GMRS
frequencies in violation of FCC rules, as
stipulated in the Communications Act’s
Sections 501 and 502 (amended). You
will be issued a call sign by the FCC,
which should be used for station
identification when operating the radio
on GMRS frequencies. You should also
cooperate by engaging in permissible
transmissions only, avoiding channel
interference with other GMRS users,
and being prudent with the length of
your transmission time. To obtain a
license or ask questions about the
license application, contact the FCC at
1-888-CALL-FCC or go to the FCC's
website: https://www.fcc.gov and
request form 605.!

Overview

The Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO GMRS Two-Way Radio Transceiver & Scanner is an advanced communication device designed for personal business, recreational, emergency, and SHTF (Survival, Hunker Down, Tactical, and Family) communications, as well as scanning. It builds upon the trusted performance and design of previous Wouxun amateur radios, modified to comply with FCC GMRS specifications and regulations.

Function Description:

The KG-UV9G operates on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies, requiring an FCC license for transmission. It functions as both a two-way radio transceiver and a scanner. The device supports single and dual receiver modes, allowing users to monitor two frequencies simultaneously. It offers various scanning modes, including SE (Scan Exit), TO (Time Operation), and CO (Carrier Operation), to suit different monitoring needs. The radio also integrates a commercial FM radio feature, tuning from 76 to 108 MHz, which can be monitored while simultaneously "watching" for active signals on the main and sub-band receivers.

Usage Features:

Basic Operation:

  • Power and Volume: The radio is turned on by rotating the On/Off/Volume Knob clockwise. This knob also adjusts the audio volume.
  • Channel/Frequency Selection: Channels or frequencies can be selected using the Channel Knob, the up/down arrow keys, or by directly entering numbers via the 1-9 keypad.
  • Main/Sub-Band Selection: The BAND key toggles the active MAIN receiver. The TDR-V/M (True Dual Receive) key switches between single and dual receive modes.
  • Transmitting: To transmit, select a channel or frequency, short-press PF3 to confirm it's clear, then again to mute. Hold the radio upright, press and hold the PTT key, speak clearly, and release PTT to stop.
  • Function Menu: The MENU key accesses the function menu. Users navigate with the Channel Knob or 1-9 keys, press MENU to edit, select a value, and press MENU again to save changes. EXIT or MENU can be pressed to abort without saving.
  • Keypad Shortcuts: The keypad offers numerous shortcuts for quick access to functions like frequency/channel entry, FM radio memory, main receiver toggle, dual receive mode, VFO/frequency/channel name modes, menu access, scan, lock, channel/function/value navigation, and VHF/UHF toggle.

Scanning Features:

  • Scan Modes:
    • SE Scan Mode: Scans until a signal breaks squelch, then stops scanning and remains on that channel/frequency.
    • TO Scan Mode: Scans, pauses for 5 seconds upon signal reception, then resumes.
    • CO Scan Mode: Scans, pauses until the signal ceases, then resumes if no signal returns after 3 seconds.
  • Scan Group Selection: Users can assign a specific scan group (01-10) to each receiver independently via MENU 49_SCN-GP.
  • Initiating Scan: Long-press the *-SCAN key to start scanning channels or frequencies on the current MAIN band. To scan on the other receiver, make it the MAIN receiver first, then long-press *-SCAN.
  • Stopping Scan: Switch to the desired receiver using the BAND key, then press any key other than BAND, EXIT, or *-SCAN.
  • Scanning Advance: While in TO or CO Scan Modes, rotating the Channel Knob immediately advances or resumes scanning past an unwanted signal.

FM Radio Features:

  • Access: Short-press PF2 to enter/exit the FM Radio feature.
  • Modes: Toggle between IN FRQ (In Frequency) VFO Mode, Memory Save, and Memory Call modes using a short-press of the #-LOCK key.
  • Scanning: Press the *-SCAN key to scan for an active FM Radio station.
  • Selection: Use 1-9 keys or the Channel Knob to select a frequency or memory channel.

Channel Management:

  • Adding New Channels: Users can add new simplex GMRS Tx/Rx or other Scanner Rx-Only channels via the keypad in VFO/FREQ Mode. Repeater channels can be added via software.
  • Saving Channels: Enter the desired Rx frequency in VFO/FREQ Mode, then use MENU 30_MEM-CH to write it to an unused memory channel (displayed in red).
  • Channel Parameters: In Channel Mode, use the Function Menu to set parameters like W/N (Wide/Narrow bandwidth), TXP (Transmit Power), BCL (Busy Channel Lockout), Rx-CTC/DCS (Receive CTCSS/DCS), TX-CTC/DCS (Transmit CTCSS/DCS), CH-NAME (Channel Name), SCAN-ADD (Add to Scan List), and SCAN-GP (Scan Group).

Programmable Function Keys (PF Keys):

  • PF1 (momentary): Sub-Band Receiver TX.
  • PTT (momentary): MAIN Receiver TX.
  • PF2 (short-press): Broadcast FM Radio (On/Off).
  • PF2 (long-press): Flashlight/Torch (On/Off).
  • PF3 (short-press): Monitor (Open/Close Squelch).
  • PF3 (long-press): Stopwatch (Start/Stop/Off-Reset).
  • Side-Keys: PF2 and PF3 side-keys allow short and long presses for primary and secondary functions.

Station ID:

  • GMRS station call signs must be transmitted via voice in English or Intl. Morse Code telegraphy.
  • Transmission timing: After a single transmission or series, after 15 minutes, and at least once every 15 minutes thereafter during transmissions lasting over 15 minutes.
  • Unit numbers and names can also be used for identification.

Maintenance Features:

  • Reset Function: The device includes a RESET ALL function (MENU 61_RESET | ALL) to restore factory/default channels and settings.
  • Software Programming: The radio supports free programming software, allowing users to customize settings, add repeater channels, and even change the "BetterSafeRadio" display message to their own call sign (up to 16 characters). This also allows for programming positive shift direction for GMRS repeater pairs.

Safety and Compliance:

  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with FCC PART 15B rules for scanning receivers and PART 95E for GMRS operation.
  • Transmission Safety: Do not transmit without an antenna attached, with a damaged antenna, while touching the antenna, around explosives, or while refueling a vehicle. Use only batteries and chargers designed for the radio.
  • Radiation Exposure: Maintain a minimum distance of 2.5 cm between the radiator and your body during operation. The antenna must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter.
