The Yamaha YST-SW005 is a subwoofer system designed to enhance the low-frequency sound reproduction of an audio system, providing a more realistic, theater-in-the-home effect. It incorporates Yamaha's Advanced Active Servo Technology for high-quality super-bass sound.
Function Description:
The primary function of the YST-SW005 is to reproduce low-frequency sounds (bass) that main speakers might not fully capture. It can be easily integrated into existing audio systems, connecting either to the amplifier's speaker terminals or line output (pin jack) terminals. The subwoofer features a built-in power amplifier, which radiates heat from the rear panel, necessitating adequate space around the unit for ventilation.
The Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology employed in this subwoofer is based on two main factors: the Helmholtz resonator and negative-impedance drive. The system uses an "air woofer" (a port or opening in the speaker's cabinet) to reproduce bass frequencies. This design allows low-amplitude signals within the cabinet to be outputted as high-amplitude waves, provided the opening size and cabinet volume are correctly proportioned. The negative-impedance drive circuits enable the amplifier to generate precise, low-amplitude, low-frequency waves with superior damping characteristics, resulting in an extremely wide range of frequencies with amazing sound quality and less distortion. The Advanced Negative Impedance Converter (ANIC) circuits dynamically vary to select an optimum value for speaker impedance, providing more stable performance and improved sound pressure for natural and dynamic bass reproduction.
The YST-SW005 includes an automatic power-switching function (AUTO STANDBY) that allows the unit to enter standby mode after 7 to 8 minutes of no input signal, and automatically turn on when an audio signal is detected. This feature helps conserve power. The power indicator on the front panel lights green when the unit is on and red when in standby mode.

Usage Features:
- Placement: For optimal performance, the subwoofer should be placed on the outside of either the right or left main speaker. If using two subwoofers, placing them on the outside of each main speaker is recommended. To prevent bass cancellation due to "standing waves" between parallel walls, the subwoofer can be faced obliquely to the wall, or parallel surfaces can be broken up with bookshelves. Nonskid pads are provided to prevent movement due to vibrations.
- Connections: The subwoofer can be connected to an amplifier's line output (pin jack) terminals (INPUT2) or speaker output terminals (INPUT1). When connecting to line output, specific terminals on DSP amplifiers (SUBWOOFER or LOW PASS) or SPLIT SUBWOOFER terminals should be used. For speaker output connections, the amplifier's speaker terminals connect to the subwoofer's INPUT1, and the subwoofer's OUTPUT terminals connect to the main speakers. Correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) is crucial for proper sound.
- Controls:
- POWER switch: Turns the subwoofer on or off.
- VOLUME control: Adjusts the subwoofer's volume level.
- HIGH CUT switch (HIGH/LOW): Selects the high-frequency cut-off point, allowing adjustment of the tone balance between the subwoofer and main speakers. LOW is the normal setting, but HIGH can be used if needed based on room size or speaker distance.
- AUTO STANDBY switch (HIGH/LOW/OFF): Enables or disables the automatic power-switching function. HIGH position ensures the unit turns on even with low input signals, while LOW is the usual setting. OFF disables the function.
- VOLTAGE SELECTOR switch (China and General models only): Allows selection of the appropriate voltage range (110V-120V or 220V-240V) for the local AC main supply. This must be set correctly before plugging in the unit.
- Adjusting the Subwoofer: After connecting, the VOLUME control should be set to minimum, other components turned on, and the subwoofer powered on. Play a source with low-frequency components and adjust the amplifier's volume. Then, set the HIGH CUT switch to LOW or HIGH and gradually increase the subwoofer's VOLUME to achieve the desired bass effect and tone balance with the main speakers.
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning: Use a clean, dry cloth for cleaning. Avoid chemical solvents as they may damage the finish.
- Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings. Install the unit with sufficient space (at least 20 cm above, behind, and on both sides) to prevent heat buildup, which could lead to fire or damage. Do not cover the rear panel with newspapers, tablecloths, or curtains.
- Environmental Considerations: Install in a cool, dry, clean place away from heat sources, excessive vibration, dust, moisture, cold, and humming sources. Avoid exposing the unit to rain or moisture.
- Power Cord Protection: Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched.
- Lightning and Unuse: Unplug the apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods.
- Safety: Never open the cabinet due to high voltage. Do not use force on switches or connection wires. When moving, disconnect the power plug and all wires. Avoid placing small metallic objects, glass, china, burning candles, or vessels with water on the unit. Do not put hands or foreign objects into the YST port.
- Troubleshooting: A dedicated section in the manual provides solutions for common operating errors such as no power, no sound, low sound level, or issues with the automatic power-switching function. If problems persist, contact an authorized YAMAHA dealer.
- Magnetic Shielding: The unit features magnetic shielding, but placing it too close to a TV may still impair picture color, so it should be moved away if this occurs.
- Hearing Protection: Yamaha recommends avoiding prolonged exposure to excessive volume levels to protect sensitive hearing.
