Overview

The Yost ADI-6 Bench Vise is a robust clamping tool designed for securing workpieces during various tasks. Established in 1908, Yost Vises are known for their durability and functionality.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Yost ADI-6 Bench Vise is to firmly hold objects, allowing for hands-free operation during tasks such as cutting, drilling, filing, or assembly. It features a swivel base, enabling the vise to be rotated for optimal access to the workpiece from different angles. The vise consists of a stationary body and a movable jaw, which is operated by a spindle handle to clamp objects between serrated jaws. A pipe jaw is also included for securing round or irregularly shaped items.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: ADI-6
  • Item Number: 20006
  • Jaw Width: 6 inches
  • Jaw Opening: 7.8 inches
  • Pipe Capacity: 0.75 - 3.5 inches
  • Throat Depth: 3.7 inches
  • Weight: 42 lbs
  • Clamping Force: Jaws are designed to withstand a clamping force of 10,000 pounds without distortion of the vise or its components.
  • Torque Resistance: Capable of withstanding 240 Ft-Lb of torque without distortion.
  • Jaw Hardness: Hardened steel serrated jaws have a Rockwell C hardness of RC 52-58.
  • Mounting Hole Pattern: The base features a three-hole mounting pattern with a bolt circle diameter of 8.26 inches and a radius of 0.68 inches for each mounting tab. The mounting holes are spaced at 120-degree intervals.

Usage Features:

  • Secure Mounting: The vise must be securely mounted to a workbench using proper length and diameter bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and locking nuts. For added strength, a piece of wood (18" x 18" x 2") and a metal plate (18" x 18" x ¼”) should be placed underneath the workbench.
  • Swivel Base Operation: The swivel base allows the vise to be rotated. To adjust, loosen the lockdowns on both sides of the vise by approximately ¼ of a turn counterclockwise, swivel the vise to the desired position, and then tighten the lockdowns clockwise to secure it.
  • Clamping Operation: Objects are placed between the serrated jaws. The vise handle is turned clockwise to close and tighten the jaws until the item is snug and cannot move. Over-tightening should be avoided to prevent damage to the item or the vise. To release, the handle is turned counterclockwise.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always ensure bench tops are properly secured.
    • Use proper nuts, bolts, and lock washers for mounting.
    • Use a vise of appropriate size and capacity for the workpiece.
    • Wear eye, face, and ear protection when striking or using power tools with the vise.
    • Wear a dust mask or respirator when working with wood, metal, chemical dusts, or mists.
    • Wear restrictive hair covering and anti-slip footwear.
    • Hand-tighten lockdown handles for the swivel base.
    • Inspect the vise for stress fatigue or damage before use.
    • Never use a hammer, extension pipe, or cheater bar on the spindle handle.
    • Never unscrew the movable jaw beyond its maximum specified opening.
    • Never weld the base of the vise to any metal object.
    • Never use the vise to press an object into or out of another object.
    • Never use an extension pipe to tighten lockdown handles.
    • Never place pressurized containers or combustible materials in the vise.
    • Never wear loose clothing or jewelry while operating the vise.
    • Never apply extreme or prolonged heat to the vise, as it may alter structural properties.
    • Ensure the work area is dry, well-lit, clean, unobstructed, and the workbench is properly secured and capable of handling the vise and workload.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Greasing: The main screw should be greased regularly to ensure smooth operation and longevity.
  • Periodic Re-tightening: Periodically recheck and re-tighten the nuts securing the vise to the workbench to maintain stability.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the vise for any signs of stress fatigue or damage to ensure safe and effective operation.
