Overview

The Yost ADI-8 Bench Vise is a robust and versatile tool designed for securely clamping workpieces during various tasks. Manufactured by Yost Vises, established in 1908, this model is built to provide reliable performance and durability for both professional and DIY applications.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Yost ADI-8 Bench Vise is to hold objects firmly in place, allowing the user to perform operations such as cutting, drilling, filing, or assembly with both hands free. Its design incorporates a swivel base, which enables the vise to be rotated to different positions, offering flexibility and improved access to the workpiece from various angles. The vise is designed to be mounted securely to a workbench, ensuring stability during use.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: ADI-8
  • Item Number: 20007
  • Jaw Width: 8 inches
  • Jaw Opening: 9.5 inches
  • Pipe Capacity: 0.5 inches to 4.0 inches
  • Throat Depth: 4.5 inches
  • Weight: 57 pounds
  • Clamping Force: Jaws are capable of withstanding a clamping force of 11,000 pounds without distortion of the vise or its components.
  • Torque Resistance: Can withstand a torque of 260 Ft-Lb without distortion.
  • Jaw Hardness: Hardened steel serrated jaws have a Rockwell C hardness of RC 52-58, ensuring excellent grip and wear resistance.
  • Mounting Dimensions: The base plate features a circular design with a diameter of 8.35 inches and mounting tabs spaced at 120-degree intervals, with a radius of 0.72 inches from the center to the mounting holes.

Usage Features:

The Yost ADI-8 Bench Vise is designed for ease of use and adaptability.

  • Secure Mounting: The vise requires secure mounting to a workbench. It is recommended to use proper length and diameter bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and locking nuts. For added strength, a piece of wood (18" x 18" x 2") or a metal plate (18" x 18" x ¼”) should be placed underneath the workbench where the vise is mounted. The mounting holes should be drilled using the swivel base as a template.
  • Vise Operation: To open the vise, turn the handle counterclockwise. To close and tighten, turn clockwise. It is crucial not to over-tighten the screw handle beyond what is necessary to secure the item, as this can damage the item or the vise. The vise should not be opened beyond its rated jaw capacity.
  • Swivel Base Operation: The swivel base allows the vise to be rotated for optimal access to the workpiece. To adjust the position, slowly loosen the two lockdowns located on either side of the vise by about ¼ of a turn counterclockwise. Once the desired position is achieved, tighten the lockdowns clockwise to secure the vise to the base. It is important not to over-loosen or remove the lockdowns entirely, as this could cause the vise to tip over.
  • Pipe Jaws: The vise includes pipe jaws, allowing it to securely hold round objects with a capacity ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 inches.
  • Safety Instructions: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions, including always wearing eye, face, and ear protection; using proper nuts, bolts, and lock washers for mounting; ensuring the workbench is properly secured; and never using a hammer, extension pipe, or cheater bar on the spindle handle. It also warns against unscrewing the movable jaw beyond its maximum opening, welding the base, or using the vise to press objects.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the Yost ADI-8 Bench Vise.

  • Regular Greasing: The main screw should be greased regularly to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear.
  • Inspection: Users should always inspect the vise for stress fatigue or damage before each use. Any signs of damage should be addressed immediately.
  • Re-tightening: Periodically recheck and re-tighten the mounting nuts that secure the vise to the workbench to maintain stability.
  • Cleaning: The work area should be kept clean and unobstructed, and the vise itself should be free from debris that could impede its function.

The Yost ADI-8 Bench Vise is a reliable and durable tool, provided it is used and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions. Its robust construction and thoughtful design make it a valuable asset for any workshop.
