Overview

The Z Grills MINI Wood Pellet Smoker Grill is a compact and versatile outdoor cooking appliance designed for smoking and grilling food using wood pellets. This owner's manual provides comprehensive instructions for assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring a safe and enjoyable cooking experience.

Function Description

The Z Grills MINI operates as a wood pellet smoker and grill, utilizing a digital PID controller to monitor the internal temperature and regulate the delivery of wood pellets to the fire-pot. This precise control allows for consistent temperatures, ideal for both low-and-slow smoking and high-temperature grilling. The grill's core components include a hopper for storing wood pellets, an auger feed system to transport pellets to the fire-pot, an ignition rod to light the pellets, and a fan to maintain combustion and circulate heat. The internal temperature sensor provides real-time feedback to the controller, which then adjusts the auger motor's operation to maintain the desired cooking temperature. An optional BBQ hotplate accessory can be used for direct heat cooking, expanding the grill's functionality beyond traditional smoking and grilling.

Usage Features

The Z Grills MINI is designed for outdoor use only, emphasizing safety and proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. It requires an earthed 240V AC power supply with safety switch protection.

  • Initial Startup and Burn-in: Before first use, or after the grill runs out of pellets, an initial startup procedure is required to prime the auger feed tube and establish a fire. This involves removing the grill rack and grease tray, checking the hopper for foreign objects, plugging in the power cord, setting the dial to SMOKE, confirming auger rotation and fan operation, adding pellets, and then setting the dial to the highest temperature (232°C) to feed pellets into the fire-pot. Once pellets begin to drop, the dial is returned to OFF and then SMOKE to initiate the startup cycle. After the fire is roaring, the grease tray and grill racks are reinserted. A 45-minute high-temperature burn-in is crucial for new grills to burn off manufacturing oils, ensuring food safety and optimal performance.
  • Normal Operation: To start cooking, the grill lid is opened, and the controller is set to SMOKE. The lid remains open until smoke clears and a "roaring" fire sound is heard. The lid is then shut, and the temperature dial is set to the desired temperature. Food is placed in the grill after about 10 minutes or once the target temperature is reached.
  • Temperature Control: The digital PID controller allows users to set precise temperatures ranging from 82°C to 232°C, as well as a SMOKE setting for maximum smoky flavor. The controller displays both the grill's internal temperature and the temperature from an optional food probe. Temperature adjustments are made by turning the control dial. The grill will slowly adjust to new temperature targets, with small temperature swings being normal.
  • Food Temperature Probe: The included food temperature probe plugs into the controller, allowing users to monitor the internal temperature of their food. The cable is designed to withstand high temperatures and can remain in the grill with the lid closed during operation.
  • Shutdown Procedure: After cooking, the controller dial should always be turned to "Shut Down." If cooking at 162°C or higher, it's recommended to first turn to the SMOKE setting for at least 10 minutes to allow the fire to die down before turning to Shut Down. The fan will continue to run for approximately 10 minutes to burn out any remaining pellets in the fire-pot. The grill should not be unplugged until the fan has stopped.
  • Power Cut Recovery: In case of a power cut, if power returns immediately, the dial should be turned to OFF, then to the desired temperature to resume operation. If power is off for more than 30 seconds, the grill lid should be opened, the dial turned to OFF then SMOKE, and once the roaring fire sound is heard, the lid can be closed, and the desired temperature set.
  • BBQ Hotplate Use: The optional cast iron BBQ hotplate is placed directly over the fire-pot, replacing the grill rack and grease tray. It requires time to heat up and should be seasoned and cared for like any cast iron cookware. Rapid cooling with cold liquids should be avoided to prevent cracking.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and proper storage are essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Z Grills MINI.

  • Grease Tray & Bucket: After each use, the foil from the grease tray should be removed, and any surface grease wiped off. The grease bucket should be emptied and washed with warm soapy water. Lining the bucket with foil is recommended for easier cleaning.
  • Grill Rack: The ceramic-coated grill rack should be cleaned with a wet cloth, BBQ wipes, or a Koala Claw wood scraper to remove large chunks. Stainless steel wire brushes or strong chemical cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage to the ceramic coating.
  • Fire-pot: Ash accumulation in the fire-pot and surrounding area needs to be vacuumed out after each long cook or every 3-4kg of wood pellet usage. This should only be done when the grill is cold, switched OFF, and unplugged. Any grease that has dribbled into the fire-pot area should be cleaned with BBQ cleaning wipes.
  • Vents: After approximately 50+ hours of use, soot around the air vents on the rear of the lid should be cleaned with an old toothbrush and wiped clean with BBQ wipes.
  • Grill Surfaces: The inside and outside of the grill should be wiped down with BBQ cleaning wipes or warm soapy water and a moist cloth. If stored outdoors, the grill should be covered with a protective cover to prevent exposure to rain.
  • Temperature Sensor: The temperature sensor inside the grill should be gently cleaned with wire wool to ensure accurate temperature readings.
  • Food Temperature Probe: Food probes must be thoroughly scrubbed with hot soapy water after each use to prevent contamination. The entire probe or cable should not be immersed in water, and twisting or kinking the cable should be avoided.
  • Pellet Storage: Wood pellets should always be stored in a dry location, away from heat or ignition sources, preferably in airtight containers. Moist pellets can expand, break apart, and jam the auger feed system. Only the required amount of pellets should be poured into the hopper for each cook.
  • Pellet Cleaning (Long-term Storage): If the grill will not be used for several weeks or longer, especially in humid climates, it's advisable to clear out pellets. This involves scooping out pellets from the hopper, removing the hopper top to access remaining pellets, and then running the grill at a high temperature until all pellets are used up. After cooling, the hopper and fire-pot should be vacuumed. The Initial Startup Process must be completed before the next use.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues like the grill not turning on, error codes (Er1, Er2, LEr, HEr), and temperature inconsistencies. It also includes instructions for DIY repair of key components, with estimated times, difficulty levels, required parts, and tools. Users are advised to unplug the grill from power before any repairs and to contact customer support for assistance or replacement parts.
