The 3M™ 8511/8511P Particulate Respirator with 3M™ Multi Use Duct Tape is a personal protective device designed to help protect against certain airborne contaminants, with an added feature for source control. This respirator is approved by NIOSH for use with the specified 3M™ Particulate Respirators and any color of 3M™ Multi Use Duct Tape (1.88 inch [48mm]). The duct tape component is available in various colors, including Black (3920-BK, 3960-BK), Red (3920-RD, 3960-RD), White (3920-WH, 3960-WH), Blue (3920-BL), Brown (3920-BR), Green (3920-GR), Orange (3920-OR), and Yellow (3920-YL).
The primary function of the 3M™ 8511/8511P Particulate Respirator is to filter airborne particulates, thereby reducing the wearer's exposure to certain contaminants. When combined with the 3M™ Multi Use Duct Tape, the device gains an additional function: source control. Source control is achieved by covering the exhalation valve of the respirator with the duct tape. This modification helps to contain exhaled air, preventing the spread of particles from the wearer into the surrounding environment. This feature is particularly useful in situations where it is important to minimize the transmission of respiratory droplets from the wearer. The respirator itself is designed for comfortable wear, featuring a valved design that facilitates easier breathing by allowing exhaled air to escape, which can reduce heat and moisture buildup inside the respirator. However, for source control purposes, this valve is intentionally covered.
The installation of the 3M™ Multi Use Duct Tape is a straightforward process. Before installation, it is crucial to ensure that the inside of the respirator's exhalation valve is clean and undamaged. The valve is located on the inside of the respirator. The user then cuts a piece of the 3M™ Multi Use Duct Tape to the appropriate length, which is approximately 41 mm, to completely cover the exhalation valve. This piece of tape is then attached to the inside of the exhalation valve, ensuring full coverage.
After the tape is installed, it is essential to perform seal checks to ensure a proper fit and effective function. Two types of seal checks are recommended:
Negative Pressure Seal Check: To perform this check, the wearer places both hands completely over the respirator and inhales sharply. A proper seal is indicated by a negative pressure sensation inside the respirator. If air leaks are detected around the nose or the edges of the respirator, the nosepiece and straps should be readjusted. This process is repeated until a tight faceseal is achieved.
Positive Pressure Seal Check: For this check, the wearer places both hands completely over the respirator and exhales sharply. If air leaks are felt around the nose or the edges of the respirator, the nosepiece and straps need to be readjusted. This step is also repeated until a tight faceseal is obtained.
It is critical that if a proper seal cannot be achieved after these adjustments, the wearer should not enter the contaminated area and should consult their supervisor. This emphasizes the importance of a secure fit for the device's effectiveness.
The product is designed without components made from natural rubber latex, making it suitable for individuals with latex sensitivities.
The 3M™ 8511/8511P Particulate Respirator and the 3M™ Multi Use Duct Tape are designed for single use and do not feature replaceable components. Therefore, maintenance primarily involves pre-use inspection and proper disposal.
Inspection: Before each use, both the valved respirator and the tape must be inspected.
Time Use Limitations and Disposal: The device has specific time use limitations. If the respirator or the tape becomes damaged, soiled, or if breathing becomes difficult, the wearer must immediately leave the contaminated area and replace both products. Similarly, if the tape delaminates or no longer adheres properly, the entire respirator should be disposed of. Disposal of the used product must always be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations, ensuring environmental responsibility and adherence to safety standards.
