Overview

The 3M™ Wireless Drive Thru System Model G5, also referred to as the G5 Basestation, is a wireless communication system designed for drive-thru operations, specifically for single-lane setups. This document outlines the upgrade process from the older XT-1 Basestation to the G5 Basestation, focusing on installation, wiring, configuration, and maintenance aspects.

Function Description:

The G5 Basestation serves as the central hub for wireless communication in a drive-thru system. It manages audio communication between staff headsets and customers at the order point, integrates with vehicle detection systems, handles greeter messages, and supports alert and reminder functionalities. The system is designed to enhance efficiency and customer experience in fast-food and similar drive-thru environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Vehicle Detector Boards: The G5 Basestation accommodates up to two internal vehicle detector boards, which must be connected to the Order Point induction loops. This allows for precise vehicle detection at the order point.
  • General Purpose Input/Outputs (GPIOs): The G5 Basestation provides 16 configurable logical Inputs and Outputs. These GPIOs are active low and are factory-set to specific signals, but can be reassigned via the Digital IO Setup in the System Menu. This flexibility allows for integration with various external devices and custom functionalities.
  • Power Input: The system operates on a 12V input, typically supplied via a power supply's barrel connector.
  • Antenna Support: The G5 Basestation supports external antennas (Omni-Directional or Patch Antenna) for extended range and improved signal quality.
  • Configuration Interface: Configuration can be performed manually via the basestation's front panel (keypad and LCD screen) or remotely through its Web Server.
  • Memory: The system includes an MMC/SD slot, likely for firmware updates, configuration backups, or data logging.

Usage Features:

  • Headset Registration: The G5 Basestation supports registration of both G5 and XT-1 headsets, allowing for a smooth transition during upgrades or mixed-system environments. Headsets are registered through the System Menu in Configuration Mode.
  • Order Taking Modes: The system can be configured for various order taking modes, including SPLIT/CROSS and DAY/NIGHT, which can be triggered by external buttons connected to specific GPIOs.
  • Greeter Functionality: Built into the G5 Basestation, the greeter functionality allows for playback of greet messages to customers at the Order Point and reminder messages at scheduled times.
  • Alert Messages: The system can be programmed to play alert messages in response to external events, such as a back door opening or a refrigerator door opening. Any of the 16 GPIOs can be configured as an ALERT Message Trigger Input. These alerts can be played on specific headsets.
  • Timer Greet Event: The Greet Event, typically for a timer, can be extracted from the G5 Basestation by connecting the timer system to GPIO11 and GND1.
  • Web Server Configuration: For advanced configuration and management, the G5 Basestation can be accessed via a web server, allowing for remote setup and monitoring.
  • User Passcodes: The system employs passcodes for accessing Configuration Mode, ensuring secure access to critical settings. Default installer and user passwords are provided.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Installation Checklist: A crucial step before upgrading is to interview the store manager to identify any existing drive-thru equipment issues and to capture all relevant information regarding store operation and greeter functionality using a pre-install checklist. This includes checking current XT-1 Basestation settings, inspecting connected peripherals (timers, greeters, vehicle detectors, pre-approach loops), and noting desired operational changes.
  • Cable Verification: Before installation, it's important to verify the condition of the cable to the outside Order Post and inspect the Order Post itself to ensure the speaker and microphone are properly positioned and treated with a 3M™ Acoustic Kit.
  • Wiring Management: The upgrade process emphasizes careful disconnection and labeling of wires from the XT-1 Basestation to ensure correct re-wiring to the G5 Basestation. Guidelines for properly terminating color-coded cables are provided.
  • Cable Splicing: In cases where existing cable lengths are insufficient, the document provides instructions for splicing in additional wire from 3M Cables, emphasizing proper insulation with electrical insulation tape or wire nuts to prevent accidental grounding.
  • Configuration Backup (Not Supported for XT-1 to G5): While the G5 Basestation allows saving its current settings, configuration files exported from the XT-1 Basestation cannot be imported or loaded onto the G5 Basestation, requiring manual configuration.
  • Troubleshooting: The pre-requisite to rectify any existing drive-thru equipment issues before upgrading highlights a proactive approach to maintenance, ensuring a stable foundation for the new system.
