Overview

This document is an instruction manual for an advanced FLOW engineering (aFe) power intake system designed for specific Ford F-150 models. The manual provides detailed steps for the removal of the original equipment (OE) intake system and the installation of the aFe power intake system, including a bill of materials, illustrative figures, and important notes regarding installation and maintenance.

Function Description:

The aFe power intake system is designed to replace the factory air intake system in Ford F-150 trucks, specifically models equipped with V6-2.7L (tt) EcoBoost engines from 2015-2021 and V6-3.5L (tt) EcoBoost engines from 2015-2016. The primary function of this aftermarket intake system is to improve airflow to the engine, which can lead to increased horsepower, torque, and potentially better fuel efficiency. By utilizing larger, less restrictive intake tubes and high-flow air filters, the system aims to reduce intake restriction and optimize engine performance. The system includes a custom-designed housing to protect the filters and direct airflow, as well as specialized couplings and clamps to ensure a secure and leak-free installation. For V6-3.5L (tt) EcoBoost models, a vent insert is included to manage specific engine ventilation requirements.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Part Numbers: The instruction manual covers two main part numbers: 51-22642-B and 54-22642-B, indicating variations likely related to the air filter type (Pro DRY S or Pro 5R).
  • Compatibility:
    • Make: Ford
    • Model: F-150
    • Years: 2015-2021 (for V6-2.7L (tt) EcoBoost engine)
    • Years: 2015-2016 (for V6-3.5L (tt) EcoBoost engine)
  • Components (Bill of Materials):
    • Air Filters: Two air filters are included, either Pro DRY S (P/N: 21-30003) or Pro 5R (P/N: 24-30003). The choice between these likely depends on the specific kit purchased, with Pro DRY S being a dry, oil-free filter and Pro 5R being an oiled, washable filter.
    • Intake Tubes: Two intake tubes, labeled "Tube #1 of 2" (P/N: 05-22642B1) and "Tube #2 of 2" (P/N: 05-22642B2), are part of the system.
    • Housing: A custom-designed housing (P/N: 05-12972B3) encloses the air filters and connects to the intake tubes.
    • Couplings: Two silicone elbow couplings (P/N: 05-01445 and P/N: 05-01446) are used to connect the intake tubes to other components.
    • Clamps: Various clamps are provided for securing connections:
      • Three #044 clamps (P/N: 03-50019)
      • Two Mini #010 clamps (P/N: 03-50078)
      • One #064 clamp (P/N: 03-50006)
    • Vent Insert: One vent insert (P/N: 05-01405) is specifically for V6-3.5L (tt) models only, indicating a specialized component for certain engine configurations.
    • Hose: A 5/8" ID fuel hose, 2" long (P/N: 05-00069), is included.
    • Trim Seal: A 7/16" trim seal, 26" long (P/N: 05-00072), is used for sealing the housing.
  • Required Tools for Installation: 8mm Nut Driver, Flat Head Screwdriver.

Usage Features:

  • Enhanced Airflow: The core feature is improved engine breathing, which typically translates to better throttle response and increased power output.
  • Direct Replacement: The system is designed as a direct replacement for the OE intake, ensuring a relatively straightforward installation process for those with basic mechanical skills.
  • Sensor Integration: The design accommodates the factory temperature sensor, ensuring proper engine management system function after installation.
  • Model-Specific Components: The inclusion of a vent insert specifically for V6-3.5L (tt) models highlights the system's tailored design for different engine variants, ensuring proper function and compatibility.
  • Visual Appeal: The black powder-coated intake tubes and custom housing contribute to an enhanced aesthetic under the hood.
  • Installation Instructions: The manual provides clear, step-by-step instructions with corresponding figures to guide the user through the installation process, from removing OE parts to securing the new system.
  • Warranty Information: Warranty details are available online at https://afepower.com/contact#warranty.
  • California Emission Regulations Note: The device is legal in California for use on race vehicles only, and its use on public streets is strictly prohibited in California and other states with similar emission regulations. This is a crucial legal disclaimer for users.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Options: The availability of both Pro DRY S (dry, oil-free) and Pro 5R (oiled, washable) air filters offers users a choice based on their preference for maintenance. Pro 5R filters are typically reusable and require cleaning and re-oiling, while Pro DRY S filters are often disposable or require a different cleaning procedure.
  • Retain Factory Parts: The manual explicitly advises users to "Retain factory parts for future use," which is important for potential reinstallation of the OE system or for vehicle resale.
  • Post-Installation Check: Users are instructed to "Check all bolts, clamps, and connectors after 100-200 miles" to ensure everything remains tight and secure, preventing potential issues from vibrations or settling.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual mentions that any engine codes can be cleared with a code reader or by disconnecting the battery, which is a standard troubleshooting step for engine modifications.
  • Vent Insert Removal (V6-3.5L (tt) only): For models using the vent insert, the manual provides a specific note on how to remove it if necessary, using internal snap ring pliers, indicating a design that allows for serviceability.
