Overview

This document describes the Alemite 8700 Series High-Pressure Hydraulic Pump, a device designed for dispensing lubricants.

Function Description

The Alemite 8700 Series High-Pressure Hydraulic Pump is engineered to deliver a range of light to heavy lubricants directly from their original containers. Its core function relies on a reciprocating hydraulic motor that drives a double-acting pump tube. This design allows for efficient and consistent dispensing of various lubricants, making it suitable for industrial and automotive applications where high-pressure lubrication is required. Each pump model within the series is specifically designed with a pump tube length tailored to accommodate different container sizes, ensuring versatility and ease of use with standard lubricant packaging.

Important Technical Specifications

The pump's performance is characterized by its hydraulic motor and pump tube specifications.

  • Hydraulic Motor:

    • Piston Diameter x Stroke: 1-5/16 inches x 1-5/8 inches (3.3 cm x 4.1 cm). This dimension is crucial for understanding the displacement and force generated by the motor.
    • Hydraulic Inlet: 1/4 inch NPTF (female). This specifies the connection type and size for the hydraulic power supply.
    • Max. Hydraulic Pressure: 600 psi (41.3 bars). This indicates the maximum operating pressure the hydraulic motor can withstand and generate. Further details on the air motor can be found in Service Guide SER 340952.
  • Pump Tube:

    • Material Outlet: 3/8 inch NPTF (female). This is the connection point for the lubricant dispensing hose or nozzle.
    • Max. Material Pressure: 7500 psi (517 bars). This is a critical specification, highlighting the high-pressure capability of the pump for dispensing viscous lubricants.
    • Max. Delivery/Minute (Approximate): 16 ounces (454 grams). This indicates the approximate flow rate of the pump, useful for estimating dispensing times.
    • Displacement per Cycle: 0.277 cubic inches (4.54 cubic cm). This value represents the volume of lubricant dispensed with each complete cycle of the pump.
  • Container Size Compatibility (by Model):

    • 8700-A: Designed for 35 lbs (20 kg) containers.
      • X dimension: 19 inches (48.3 cm)
      • Y dimension: 29-3/8 inches (74.6 cm)
    • 8700-B: Designed for 120 lbs (50 kg) containers.
      • X dimension: 27-3/4 inches (70.5 cm)
      • Y dimension: 38-1/8 inches (96.8 cm)
    • 8700-C: Designed for 400 lbs (180 kg) containers.
      • X dimension: 37 inches (94 cm)
      • Y dimension: 47-3/8 inches (120.3 cm) The X and Y dimensions refer to specific measurements of the pump assembly relative to the container, as illustrated in Figure 1.

Usage Features

The Alemite 8700 Series pumps are designed for straightforward operation and integration into various lubrication setups.

  • Container Compatibility: The availability of different pump tube lengths (Models A, B, C) ensures compatibility with common lubricant container sizes, from 35 lbs to 400 lbs. This eliminates the need for transferring lubricants to separate reservoirs, reducing mess and contamination risk.
  • High-Pressure Delivery: The pump's ability to generate up to 7500 psi (517 bars) of material pressure allows it to handle even very heavy and viscous lubricants, ensuring they can be dispensed effectively through long hoses or into tight fittings.
  • Direct-from-Container Dispensing: A key feature is the ability to draw lubricants directly from the original container, which simplifies the lubrication process and minimizes exposure of lubricants to contaminants.
  • Accessories: The manual lists several accessories that enhance the pump's utility, including followers (e.g., 337665, 338993, 338911), cover kits (e.g., 343081, 338371, 338163), collars (340090), bung adapters (326750), and handle kits (34082), allowing for customization and adaptation to specific application needs.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides comprehensive instructions for maintenance, focusing on disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and assembly, along with a troubleshooting chart to address common issues.

  • Overhaul Procedures: Detailed steps are provided for disassembling the pump, including the hydraulic motor and pump tube components. This allows for thorough inspection and replacement of worn parts.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes critical safety measures before any maintenance, such as releasing all pressure within the system and disconnecting the hydraulic supply line. A warning against using halogenated hydrocarbon solvents with aluminum/zinc-plated parts is highlighted due to explosion risk.
  • Cleaning and Inspection: Instructions for cleaning all metal parts with environmentally safe solvent and inspecting for wear or damage, particularly the piston for wire draw marks and mating surfaces for imperfections.
  • Repair Kits: Specific repair kits are available:
    • 393514: Major Repair Kit.
    • 393516: Conversion Kit (requires tube, see page 4).
    • 393530-9: Seal Kit (includes five of item 19).
    • 393530-10: Seal Kit (includes five of item 24). These kits simplify the process of obtaining necessary replacement parts for common repairs.
  • Lubrication during Assembly: A table (Table 4) specifies components that require lubrication with clean oil prior to assembly, ensuring smooth operation and longevity.
  • Loctite Application: The use of Loctite 242® and Loctite® 222™ is specified for certain threaded connections to ensure secure assembly and prevent loosening, with notes on primer use to reduce curing time.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: A detailed chart helps diagnose common pump issues based on symptoms (e.g., "Pump does not cycle," "Pump will not prime," "Pump cycles rapidly," "Pump cycles continuously") and provides possible causes and solutions, categorized into "External Leaks" and "Internal Leaks." This is an invaluable tool for quick problem resolution.
  • Service Hints: Practical advice is given, such as replacing the hydraulic motor packing group at pump overhaul, ensuring the adapter is flush with the hydraulic motor base, applying Loctite to the ball stop, checking ball seat proper seating, ensuring ball movement, and proper O-ring installation. These hints aim to prevent common operational issues and ensure correct assembly.
  • Cautionary Notes: Warnings are included, such as installing outer components carefully to avoid damage to seals and not overtightening nuts to prevent damage to pins.

Overall, the Alemite 8700 Series High-Pressure Hydraulic Pump is a robust and versatile solution for high-pressure lubricant dispensing, supported by clear technical specifications and comprehensive maintenance guidelines.
