Overview

This document outlines the operation and maintenance of Alliance Laundry Systems Washer-Extractors, specifically Barrier Washer models. It provides essential information for safe and efficient use, covering everything from initial setup to daily operation and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Washer-Extractor is designed for industrial laundry applications, capable of washing and extracting water from various textile types. It functions as a barrier washer, implying a design that separates clean and dirty laundry areas, crucial for hygiene-sensitive environments. The machine operates by filling with water, adding detergents, agitating laundry, draining water, and then spinning at high speeds to extract excess water. Its control system allows for the selection of various wash programs tailored to different fabric types and soil levels, including intensive, economy, and specialized programs for woollens, sportwear, mops, horse blankets, and jeans. The machine is equipped with safety features such as door interlocks and emergency stop buttons to ensure operator safety during operation. It also includes a soap dispenser with compartments for prewash, main wash (liquid or powder), liquid bleach, and liquid fabric softener or starch, allowing for automated dispensing of cleaning agents during the wash cycle.

Usage Features

Before operating the machine, users are instructed to sort laundry by temperature and fabric type, and to check for any foreign objects that could damage the machine or linen. Sleeves of shirts and blouses should be turned inside out, and fabrics should be unfolded and mixed to ensure optimal washing results. The machine's loading capacity is determined by the loading ratio (kg/lb linen: l/gal drum volume), with cotton textiles typically requiring a full drum load (1:10-1:13 ratio) and synthetics or blended fabrics requiring a half drum load (1:18-1:20 ratio).

To start a wash cycle, the main switch must be turned ON, and any activated emergency stop buttons released. The display will then show the start screen, prompting the user to press "I'm Ready to Wash" to view available programs. The loading door (outer door) is opened using the door handle. The inner drum door is then opened by applying pressure to the yellow lever handle and turning it clockwise to release the locking tab. After loading laundry and taring the weighing system (if equipped), the inner drum door is closed by reversing the opening procedure, ensuring the lever is in the "locked" position and cannot be turned further counter-clockwise. The outer loading door is then closed.

Detergents are added to the soap dispenser according to the chosen program. The manual advises using only low-sudsing, non-foaming detergents and to follow the dosage instructions on the detergent packaging to avoid poor wash results, suds, and overflows. Gel detergents are not recommended. Once the laundry is loaded and detergents are added, the desired wash program is selected on the display, and the START button is pressed to begin the cycle.

During the wash cycle, a visual indication light on the clean side of the machine will be on. The machine provides end-of-cycle indications through acoustic and visual signals, referred to as "traffic lights." A green light indicates the machine is in operation, an orange light signifies that operation will terminate within 4-5 minutes, and a red light indicates that the machine has finished operation and laundry can be removed (from the clean side) or loaded (on the dirty side).

In the event of a power failure, if the machine is idle, it will remain in idle condition. If a power failure occurs during a wash process, a short failure will allow the cycle to resume automatically. For a long failure, the message "RESUME - CYCLE PAUSED" will appear, and the program will continue from the interrupted step once the "Resume" button on the touchscreen is pressed.

Maintenance Features

The manual emphasizes several critical safety and maintenance precautions. Before any inspection, maintenance, or servicing, the power supply must be turned OFF, and the servicer must wait at least ten minutes for the inverter to discharge to below 30 VDC to prevent electrical shock. The machine must be connected to a grounded, permanent wiring system.

Installations must comply with minimum specifications in the Installation Manual, municipal building codes, water supply regulations, and electrical wiring regulations. Installation, adjustment, troubleshooting, and servicing should only be performed by qualified maintenance technicians familiar with local codes and the machinery's operation. The machine must be installed on a level floor of sufficient strength, with recommended clearances for inspection and maintenance. It should be secured to an uncovered, unobstructed concrete floor. Anchoring bolts should be tightened with a torque wrench only after the concrete base has completely hardened.

Users are warned not to operate the machine with guards, panels, or parts removed or broken, and not to bypass safety devices or tamper with controls. Safety decals must be maintained legible. Only authorized spare parts should be used for repairs. Damaged supply cords must be replaced by a qualified technician. Internal or external steam pipes, connections, or components can become extremely hot, and steam supply must be turned off and allowed to cool before touching. Hot inlet water temperatures higher than 125°F (51°C) and hot surfaces should be avoided.

To prevent fire and explosion, the area around the machine must be kept free from flammable and combustible products. Substances like gasoline, kerosene, waxes, cooking oils, and dry-cleaning solvents should not be added to the wash water or textiles, as their vapors can ignite or explode. Hydrogen gas, which can accumulate in hot water systems unused for two weeks or more, is explosive; hot water faucets should be run for several minutes to release any accumulated gas before using the washing machine.

The manual also highlights that the machine is not designed for use by children under 8 years old or by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities unless supervised. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the machine, and cleaning and maintenance should not be performed by children.

The machine is provided with air vents that must not be connected or covered. Automatic door-lock unlocking devices should not be used or installed on machines with a drain pump or reverse function drain valve. New hose sets supplied with the appliance must be used, and old hose sets should not be reused. The machine must be hard-wired using copper conductors only. Equipotential bonding should be made between all appliances with exposed conductive parts. An individual branch circuit is required for each machine.

To avoid machine corrosion and component failure, corrosive chemicals, especially hypochlorite, should not be used in the machine. Any problems or conditions not understood should be reported to the dealer, distributor, service agent, or manufacturer.
