Overview

This document is a user manual for an Amana Electric Range, providing instructions for safe operation, feature usage, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Amana Electric Range is a cooking appliance designed for both cooktop and oven use. It features multiple surface cooking areas on the cooktop and a main oven cavity for baking, roasting, broiling, and warming. Some models include a self-cleaning cycle for the oven and a Sabbath Mode for religious observance. The range is equipped with electronic oven controls for precise temperature and time settings.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Oven Light: Standard 40 W appliance bulb.
  • Oven Temperature Adjustment: Can be adjusted in 5°F (3°C) increments, with a range of 30°F (18°C) to -30°F (-18°C) from the default setting.
  • Timer: Can be set for up to 9 hours and 59 minutes.
  • Self-Cleaning Cycle: Adjustable between 2 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes in 30-minute increments.
  • Cooktop Overhang: Cookware should not extend more than 1/2" (1.3 cm) outside the surface cooking area.
  • Oven Air Circulation: Requires 2" (5 cm) of space around bakeware and oven walls for even cooking.

Usage Features:

Cooktop Use:

  • Control Knobs: Can be set between HI and LO.
  • Ceramic Glass Cooktop (on some models): Surface cooking areas glow red when active and may cycle on and off to maintain temperature. Light-colored ceramic glass may change color when hot and return to original color when cool.
  • Coil Elements and Burner Bowls (on some models): Coil elements should be level. Burner bowls reflect heat and catch spills. Cookware should not extend more than 1/2" (1.3 cm) over the coil element.
  • Dual Zone Cooking Element (on some models): Offers flexibility for different cookware sizes, combining single and outer elements for larger pots.
  • Melt Cooking Element (on some models): Provides a range of settings from HI (for boiling small liquids) to Melt (for sauces or keeping foods warm).
  • Cookware: Flat-bottomed, straight-sided, well-fitting lid, medium-to-heavy thickness. Aluminum and copper bottoms may leave permanent marks. Cookware material affects heat transfer; aluminum heats quickly and evenly, cast iron heats slowly and evenly, ceramic/ceramic glass heats slowly but unevenly, copper heats very quickly and evenly, earthenware heats slowly, and stainless steel heats quickly but unevenly. Nonstick surfaces should not be used under the broiler.
  • Cooktop On Indicator Light: Illuminates when any cooktop element is active.

Oven Use:

  • Electronic Oven Controls:
    • Clock: 12-hour cycle, settable for hours and minutes.
    • Oven Light: Turns on/off with the OVEN LIGHT keypad when the door is closed, and automatically when the door is opened (except during self-cleaning).
    • Timer Set Off: Sets a countdown timer without affecting oven operation.
    • Start Keypad: Initiates any oven function.
    • Off/Cancel Keypad: Stops all oven functions except the timer and oven control lockout.
    • Temp/Time Up/Down Arrows: Adjust time and temperature settings.
    • Bake: For baking and roasting, temperature adjustable. Convection fan (if present) shuts off when the door is open too long.
    • Bake Assist Temps: Preset temperatures for baking.
    • Broil: For broiling, no preheating necessary. Close oven door during broiling. Temperature adjustable for more precise control. Use broiler pan and grid to drain juices and prevent spatter/smoke.
    • Warm: Keeps hot cooked foods at serving temperature for up to 1 hour. Food should be at serving temperature before placing in the oven. Cover food for best results.
    • Control Lock (Hold 3 Sec): Locks oven controls to prevent accidental use.
    • Tones: Audible signals for valid keypresses, preheating, function entry, reminders, invalid keypresses, and end of cycle. Keypress tones can be activated/deactivated.
    • Fahrenheit and Celsius: Temperature display can be switched between °F and °C.
    • Demo Mode: For sales floor demonstrations; heating elements do not turn on.
  • Sabbath Mode (on some models): Keeps the oven ON in a bake setting until turned off. Disables tones, temperature display, and Kitchen Timer. Oven Control Lockout is disabled. Oven light status (ON/OFF) is set upon entering the mode and remains fixed. Temperature can be adjusted in 25°F (14°C) increments during Sabbath Mode.
  • Aluminum Foil: Do not line the oven bottom with foil. Do not cover entire oven rack with foil to allow air circulation.
  • Positioning Racks and Bakeware: Position racks before turning on the oven. Do not place food or bakeware directly on the oven door or bottom. Allow 2" (5 cm) space around bakeware.
  • Oven Vent: Releases hot air and moisture. Do not block or cover.
  • Home Canning: Can be performed on ceramic glass or coil element cooktops. Alternate surface cooking areas for long periods of canning. Center canner on largest cooking area; should not extend more than 1/2" (1.3 cm) beyond the area. Use flat-bottomed canners on ceramic glass models.

Maintenance Features:

Range Care:

  • Self-Cleaning Cycle (on some models):
    • Preparation: Remove broiler pan, grid, cookware, bakeware, oven racks, aluminum foil, and temperature probe. Clean inside door edge and 11/2" (3.8 cm) around the oven cavity frame with a damp cloth. Remove plastic items from cooktop and all items from storage drawer.
    • Operation: Ensure door is completely closed. Ash should be removed with a damp cloth after cooling. Do not apply cool damp cloth to inner door glass while hot. The oven light will not function during the cycle.
    • Adjustable Clean Time: Time is adjustable between 2 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes in 30-minute increments.
  • General Cleaning:
    • Exterior Porcelain Enamel Surfaces: Clean food spills containing acids (vinegar, tomato) immediately after cooling. Use glass cleaner, mild liquid cleaner, nonabrasive scrubbing pad, or affresh® Kitchen and Appliance Cleaner.

    • Surface Under Cooktop (on some models): Lift cooktop from front corners to access. Clean with glass cleaner, mild liquid cleaner, nonabrasive scrubbing pad, or affresh® Kitchen and Appliance Cleaner.
    • Oven Racks: Clean with a steel-wool pad. Apply a light coating of vegetable oil to rack guides for easier sliding if discolored.
    • Storage Drawer (on some models): Clean with mild detergent.
    • Oven Cavity: Clean food spills when oven cools. Refer to "Self-Cleaning Cycle" section for cleaning.
  • Oven Light Replacement: Unplug range or disconnect power. Turn glass bulb cover counterclockwise to remove. Turn bulb counterclockwise to remove. Replace bulb and cover, then plug in range or reconnect power.
