Mac

the
Apple
or
the
Hayes 1200
baud
modem.
With
any
other
type
of
modem,
select Other.
Let's try
an
examp
le.
We will
assume
that
you
are
con-
tacting
th
e
com
put
er
installation
at
a local college.
Enter
the
number
into
the
Phone
Settings
window
and
select
OK.
Pull
down
th
e
Phone
menu
and
select
Dial.
The
speaker
on
th
e
Hay
es
modem
s
hould
become
active,
and
you
s
hould
be
able
to
hear
the
modem
dial
th
e
number
.
The
speaker
will
remain
active
while
the
telephone
ring
s.
Wh
en
the
phon
e is
picked
up
by
the
remote
computer,
you
will
hear
a
high
pitched
tone.
This
is
one
of
the
ton
es which
computers
use
to
id
entify
themselves
over
te
lephone
lines.
Then,
if all goes
well,
there
will
be
another
tone
.
The
speaker
should
become
inacti
ve
at
this
point
and
the
Mac
s
hould
display a mess
age
indicatin
g
that
it
ha
s
contacted
another
modem.
The
message
"Connect"
sho
uld
appear
on
the
d
ocu
ment.
The
last
me
ssage
was
sent
to
you
by
you
r
Ha
yes
modem
indicating
that
it h
ad
contacted
another
modem
and
is r
eady
to
relay
data.
What
you
have
contacted
at
thi
s
point
may
or
may
not
be
another
computer.
It
is
entirely
po
ssible
that
you
ha
ve only
co
ntact
ed a n
etwo
rk
relay
ce
nter
which
handles
several
compu-
ters.
Although
th
e
exact
entry
pr
oce
dur
es
may
vary
from
case
to
case,
you
will first have
to
e
nt
er
an
identifier for
the
spec
ific
co
mputer
which
you
wish
to
contact.
Then
you
will have
to
e
nt
er
an
ide
ntificati
on
code
into
the
computer
along
with a
password.
These
codes
are int
en
d
ed
to
protect
both
yo
ur
files
in
th
e
remote
com
put
er
and
that
compute
r
from
ill
ega
l
entry.
We
have
yet
to
discuss
the
remaining
two
items which
a
pp
ea
r in
the
Phon
e menu.
When
we ha
ve
co
mpl
eted
the
communications
session, we will select
Hang
Up.
The
Mac
will
instruct
the
modem
to
hang
up
the
phone
and
terminate
the
link.
