Overview

The Aprilaire Humidifier is a whole-house indoor air quality product designed to add moisture to the air in your home, operating on the evaporative principle to maintain optimum relative humidity (RH) during the heating season. This system is manufactured by Aprilaire, a recognized leader in the heating and air conditioning industry, and is available in various models including 350, 360, 400A, 500A, 500M, 600A, 600M, 700A, and 700M.

Function Description:

The core function of the Aprilaire Humidifier is to introduce moisture into the dry, hot air circulated by your furnace. Except for Models 350 and 360, the humidifier operates in conjunction with the furnace blower motor. When the humidifier control calls for humidity and the blower motor is running, water flows to a distribution tray at the top of the humidifier. This water is uniformly distributed across a scientifically designed system of outlets and flows by gravity over the Water Panel® evaporator. Dry, hot air from the furnace is then moved through this moisture-laden Water Panel, where natural evaporation takes place. The now-humidified air, carrying moisture in vapor form, is then circulated throughout your home.

Models 350 and 360 utilize service hot water (maximum 140°F) as a heat source to aid evaporation. While the water entering the humidifier is hot, the flushing water to the drain will be cold, as heat is extracted during the evaporation process. The correct water flow is regulated by an orifice, ensuring a small, steady stream of water to the drain. This flushing action helps remove most trouble-causing minerals, preventing their accumulation and eliminating problems associated with stagnant water. The Model 400A is designed for homes where drain facilities are not accessible or where water hardness is not an issue, as it does not require a drain.

The humidifier's operation is controlled by either an Automatic Digital Humidifier Control or a Manual Humidifier Control. The Automatic Digital Humidifier Control senses indoor RH and outdoor temperature, automatically adjusting the humidifier's operation time to provide the optimum humidity level. It displays the RH level in the cold air return duct and features indicator lights for "Call Dealer for Service" (red), "Change Water Panel" (yellow), and "Humidifier On" (green). The Manual Humidifier Control requires manual adjustment based on outdoor temperature to prevent excessive condensation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Humidifier Dimensions (Models 500M and 500A): Width (including solenoid valve): 15 5/8 inches; Height (including drain spud): 13 inches; Depth: 10 1/4 inches.
  • Bypass Duct Opening (Models 500M and 500A): 6-inch diameter.
  • Plenum Opening (Models 500M and 500A): 9 1/2 inches W x 9 1/2 inches H.
  • Water Feed Rate (Models 500M and 500A): 3 gallons per hour (gph).
  • Electrical Data (Models 500M and 500A): 24 VAC-60 Hz, 0.5 AMP.
  • Water Temperature: Hot supply water (140°F maximum) is recommended for drain-type humidifiers to increase capacity and is required for heat pump applications. Hot water is required for Models 350 and 360. Do not use hot water with Model 400A.
  • Water Pressure: Do not install humidifier where water pressure exceeds 125 psi.
  • Pressure Differential: Do not install humidifier on systems with greater than 0.4 in. wg pressure differential between supply and return plenums.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Mode (Models 400A, 500A, 600A & 700A): Automatically adjusts RH based on outdoor temperature, eliminating manual adjustments and protecting against excess condensation or low humidity. The control maintains RH between 10% and 45%.
  • Manual Mode (All Models with Automatic Digital Control, and Models 350, 360, 500M, 600M & 700M): Requires manual adjustment of the control setting based on outdoor temperature to prevent condensation. Recommended RH levels are provided in a guide (e.g., 45% RH at +40°F, 15% RH at -20°F).
  • Test/Reset Feature: Allows checking humidifier operation even without a call for humidity and resets the Water Panel change timer.
  • Summer Shutdown: For Models 400A, 500A, 500M, 600A, and 600M, close the bypass damper and shut off the water supply. For controls, set the knob to "OFF" (Manual Mode) or no adjustment is needed (Automatic Mode).
  • Water Characteristics: Designed to operate effectively with hot, cold, hard, or mechanically softened water. Drain-equipped models effectively flush away minerals.

Maintenance Features:

  • Water Panel® Evaporator Replacement: For best performance, replace the Water Panel evaporator at least annually. The Model 400A requires replacement twice per heating season. The "Change Water Panel" indicator light (Automatic Control only) will blink when replacement is due. Genuine Aprilaire Water Panels are recommended for peak performance.
  • Water Line Inspection and Service: Periodically inspect and clean the water feed tube, in-line water strainer, and orifice. Disconnect electrical power and water supply before servicing. Flush or replace the in-line strainer and ensure the orifice is unplugged.
  • Distribution Tray Cleaning: Lightly scrape or brush off mineral deposits from the distribution tray. Soaking in vinegar or a lime-removing agent can help with stubborn deposits.
  • Scale Control Insert Cleaning: Clean mineral deposits from the scale control insert.
  • Drain Line Inspection: Remove the drain line from the bottom of the humidifier and flex it to loosen mineral deposits. Flush with water under pressure. Replace if it does not clean properly. Ensure the drain line has a constant downward slope and is not flattened or blocked.
  • Float and Float Chamber Inspection (Model 400A): Remove the float cover and inspect floats and float chamber for mineral build-up. Remove deposits and wash parts with a disinfecting cleaner.
  • Motor Lubrication: The motor is permanently lubricated and does not require oiling.
  • Annual Inspection: Annual inspection and preventative maintenance of the entire heating system, including the humidifier, is important for efficient and safe operation. It is recommended to contact a qualified heating and air conditioning contractor for service.

Safety Information:

  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Disconnect electrical power to the furnace before servicing.
  • Sharp Edges Hazard: Use care when making plenum openings and handling ductwork to avoid cuts.
  • Risk of Scalding: Water temperature over 125°F can cause severe burns. Shut off hot water supply before disconnecting or tapping into any hot water supply line.
  • Property and Equipment Damage: Do not install where freezing temperatures can occur, on the furnace jacket, or on a plenum face where cooling coil ends restrict airflow. Do not set humidity levels above recommended if condensation exists. Do not connect the transformer to blower motor wiring. Do not install where water pressure exceeds 125 psi or on systems with pressure differential greater than 0.4 in. wg.
