Overview

The Aprilaire Model 8140 and 8140NC Fresh Air Ventilators are designed to introduce precisely controlled amounts of outdoor air into energy-efficient homes. These devices duct outdoor air into the HVAC system, providing mechanical ventilation that meets various building codes and standards, including Energy Star Certified Homes, EPA Indoor airPLUS, International Residential Code (IRC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and California Energy Commission Title 24.

Function Description:

The ventilator's primary function is to bring fresh outdoor air into the home while minimizing energy consumption. It achieves this by integrating with the existing HVAC system. The built-in control (for Model 8140) or an external control (for Model 8140NC) manages the ventilation schedule, automatically compensating for missed ventilation time during extreme outdoor temperatures by increasing airflow during milder periods. The control also ensures that ventilation occurs for at least one hour every four hours. The Model 8140NC, lacking an integrated control, requires wiring to various external controls such as Aprilaire IAQ Control Models (8910, 8910W, 8920W), Aprilaire Thermostat Models (8620, 8620W), or Model 8120A/8120X Digital Ventilation Controllers.

Important Technical Specifications:

The ventilator operates on 115 VAC, 1 phase, 60 Hz.

  • Airflow (CFM) vs. External Static Pressure ("w.c.):
    • 0.0 "w.c.: 285 CFM
    • 0.2 "w.c.: 250 CFM
    • 0.4 "w.c.: 195 CFM
    • 0.6 "w.c.: 130 CFM
    • 0.8 "w.c.: 25 CFM
  • Current (amps): Consistently 0.4 amps across all static pressures.
  • Power (watts): Ranges from 53 watts at 0.0 and 0.2 "w.c. down to 44 watts at 0.8 "w.c.
  • Efficacy (CFM/watt): Ranges from 5.39 CFM/watt at 0.0 "w.c. down to 0.52 CFM/watt at 0.8 "w.c.
  • Dimensions:
    • Length: 27.75 inches
    • Width: 17.15 inches
    • Height: 14.31 inches (ventilator body), 11.60 inches (control module for Model 8140)
  • Duct Connections:
    • Inlet: Round collar for 6" diameter duct
    • Outlet: Oval collar for 6" diameter duct
  • Weight: Approximately 25 pounds.

Usage Features:

  • Flexible Mounting: The ventilator can be mounted in any orientation (to joists, wall, or ceiling) using supplied brackets and screws. Clearances of 10 inches for filter access and 24 inches for motor access are recommended.
  • Ductwork Integration: Requires 6" diameter flexible, insulated ductwork from the intake hood to the unit's inlet and from the unit's oval outlet to the return side of the HVAC system. Proper sealing of insulation is crucial to prevent condensation.
  • Electrical Connection: Plugs into a standard NEMA 5-15 receptacle. The unit comes with a 6-foot, 3-prong power cord.
  • Model 8140 Control Features:
    • Display: Shows ventilation time setting (minutes/hr), mode of operation (Code or Comfort), and whether the HVAC fan is on.
    • Set Up Menu: Allows configuration of parameters such as HVAC system type (HP or HC), number of bedrooms, house square footage, measured outdoor airflow (CFM), high and low temperature limits for ventilation, HVAC fan operation mode (ON, bLnd, OFF), and control mode (code or cFrt) with optional RH limits.
    • Code Mode: Ventilation occurs with heating, cooling, or fan calls for a set duration. Compensates for missed ventilation due to temperature limits by adjusting cycle periods (1, 4, 8, 12, 24 hours) and increasing total ventilation time to meet ASHRAE 62.2-2010 requirements.
    • Comfort Mode: Ventilation occurs with heating, cooling, or fan calls if outdoor temperature and indoor RH are within set limits. Missed ventilation due to limits is not made up.
    • Test Mode: Allows verification of ventilator blower, damper operation, and HVAC blower activation.
    • Rater/Inspector Verification: Displays calculated Required Continuous CFM and Measured CFM to ensure compliance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Cleaning: The fresh air filter should be removed and cleaned every six months, with an initial check after three months to determine optimal cleaning frequency. The filter door is secured by two screws. The plastic filter retainer rotates to release the filter. The filter can be rinsed with water.
  • Intake Hood Screen Cleaning: The screen at the fresh air intake hood on the outside of the house should also be cleaned regularly, as a clogged screen is a common cause of reduced ventilation.
