Overview

The AprilAire Model 8145A Fresh Air Ventilator is designed to introduce precisely controlled amounts of outdoor air into efficiently designed homes, ensuring optimal indoor air quality. This device is engineered to meet mechanical ventilation requirements for Energy Star Certified Homes, EPA Indoor airPLUS, 2012-2018 International Residential Code (IRC), 2012-2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), California Energy Commission Title 24, and ASHRAE Standards 62.2-2010, 62.2-2013, and 62.2-2016.

Function Description

The ventilator operates by ducting its inlet to an outdoor air intake and its discharge to the HVAC system. It is simply plugged in, and users can set the desired ventilation amount and temperature limits. The control system allows for programmed ventilation during specific times, with the ability to prevent ventilation during extreme outdoor temperatures (hottest or coldest periods of the day). If the outdoor temperature exceeds a high limit or falls below a low limit, ventilation will stop and additional ventilation will be brought in at a later time. The system automatically adjusts its cycle period from one hour to four, eight, twelve, and eventually twenty-four hours if the air temperature remains outside the set range, ensuring that ventilation requirements are met even under challenging conditions. The ventilator can also be wired to turn on the HVAC system blower as needed to distribute fresh air throughout the home.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Voltage: 120 VAC, 1 phase, 60 Hz.
  • Airflow (CFM) and Efficacy (CFM/watt) at various External Static Pressures ("w.c.):
    • 0.0 "w.c.: 210 CFM, 5.2 CFM/watt
    • 0.2 "w.c.: 180 CFM, 4.4 CFM/watt
    • 0.4 "w.c.: 150 CFM, 3.5 CFM/watt
    • 0.6 "w.c.: 120 CFM, 2.8 CFM/watt
  • Dimensions:
    • Overall Length: 23.41 inches
    • Main Body Length: 19.66 inches
    • Height: 11.85 inches
    • Width: 12.25 inches
    • Inlet Collar (Round): 6-inch diameter
    • Outlet Collar (Oval): 6-inch diameter
  • Weight: Approximately 15 pounds.
  • Power Cord: 6-foot power cord with a standard 3-prong plug (NEMA 5-15 receptacle required).
  • Temperature Limits: Adjustable high and low temperature limits (e.g., 105°F high/20°F low, 100°F high/30°F low, 95°F high/40°F low, or no limit).

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: The ventilator can be mounted in any orientation, including between joists, hanging from joists/rafters, or surface-mounted to a flat wall or ceiling. Mounting brackets are provided for various configurations.
  • Ductwork: Requires 6-inch diameter flexible, insulated ductwork for both the inlet (to an outdoor intake hood) and the outlet (to the return side of the HVAC system).
  • Control Knob: A single control knob is used to set the ventilation time (in minutes per hour) and to access a Test/Reset function. The knob can be set in 5-minute increments.
  • Temperature Limit Adjustment: High and low temperature limits are set using a potentiometer accessible after removing the control knob and cover, allowing the user to prevent ventilation during extreme outdoor conditions.
  • Airflow Measurement: The device includes inlet and outlet pressure ports for measuring delivered airflow using a pressure gauge, allowing for precise calibration and verification of ventilation rates. A conversion table is provided to translate pressure readings into CFM.
  • Ventilation Time Calculation: The manual provides clear instructions and tables (ASHRAE 62.2-2010 based) to calculate the minimum required airflow (CFM) based on house square footage and number of bedrooms, and then to determine the appropriate ventilation time setting (minutes per hour) based on the delivered airflow.
  • HVAC System Integration: The ventilator can be wired to either turn on the HVAC system blower as needed for air distribution or operate independently without activating the HVAC blower.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Cleaning: The fresh air filter should be removed and cleaned every six months, or more frequently depending on conditions. The filter door is designed for easy removal by flexing its outside edges. The filter can be rinsed with water.
  • Intake Hood Screen Cleaning: In addition to the internal filter, the screen at the fresh air intake hood on the outside of the house should also be cleaned regularly, as a clogged intake hood is a common cause of reduced ventilation.
  • Condensation Prevention: Important notes emphasize sealing the end of the insulation and taping zip-ties used to secure insulation to the hood collar to prevent condensation problems.
  • Warranty: The AprilAire Fresh Air Ventilator comes with a five-year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship from the date of installation. Warranty registration is available online.
