Overview

This document describes the Arcan Model HJ3000A, a 3 Ton Aluminum-Steel Hybrid Jack, providing comprehensive instructions for its safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. It emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding the entire manual before use to prevent serious injury or property damage.

Function Description

The Arcan HJ3000A is a portable automotive lifting device designed to lift motor vehicles and their components. It is explicitly stated that this is a lifting device only and, immediately after lifting, the vehicle must be supported with jack stands capable of sustaining the load before any work is performed. The jack is not designed to sustain a partial vehicular load for extended periods. Its primary function is to elevate a load to a desired work height, allowing for the placement of supporting jack stands. The hybrid construction, combining aluminum and steel, suggests a design aimed at balancing strength and portability.

Usage Features

The manual outlines a clear and detailed procedure for operating the jack, focusing on safety at every step.

Setup:

Before initial use, the handle needs to be properly assembled by inserting the upper handle into the lower handle and securing the handle yoke. A crucial setup step involves purging air from the hydraulic system, which can become trapped during shipping and handling. This is indicated by symptoms such as partial incremental pump stroke, inability to lift a load, failure to sustain a load, or a spongy pumping feel. The purging process involves closing and partially opening the release valve, then pumping the jack multiple times. This ensures optimal hydraulic performance. The manual also cautions against using inappropriate fluids like alcohol, hydraulic brake fluid, or transmission oil in the jack, recommending specific hydraulic jack oils to prevent seal damage and jack failure. Users are advised to consult the vehicle's service manual for recommended lifting surfaces before attempting to raise any vehicle.

Operation:

To raise a load, the vehicle must first be secured by placing the transmission in park or gear and applying the emergency brake. The handle is turned clockwise to close the release valve, and the jack is positioned under the load. Pumping the handle raises the lift arm. As the saddle approaches the load, the jack should be repositioned to ensure the saddle contacts the load firmly and is centered. Once the load is at the desired work height, jack stands of appropriate capacity must be placed at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended support areas. The manual explicitly warns against crawling under the vehicle while lifting or placing/removing jack stands. After placing jack stands, the jack handle is turned slowly counterclockwise to lower the load onto the stands, and the setup is inspected for stability.

To lower a load, the process is reversed. The load is first raised off the jack stands, which are then removed from under the vehicle. The handle is turned very slowly counterclockwise to completely lower the load to the ground. Once the jack's lifting saddle clears the load, the jack is removed. A critical safety warning advises keeping hands and feet away from the hinge mechanism of the jack during lowering operations.

Safety Warnings:

The manual extensively covers hazardous situations and methods to avoid them. It uses the safety alert symbol to highlight potential personal injury hazards. Key warnings include:

  • Read and understand all instructions: Emphasizes that failure to do so can lead to serious injury or death.
  • Inspect before each use: Do not use if damaged, altered, modified, leaking fluid, or unstable.
  • Lift only on specified areas: Adhere to vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Wear eye protection: Users and bystanders must wear eye protection meeting ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA standards.
  • Do not exceed rated capacity: Avoid overloading and shock loading.
  • Use jack stands: The jack is a lifting device only; support the vehicle with jack stands immediately after lifting.
  • Use on hard, level surface: Ensure the jack can reposition freely during lifting/lowering.
  • Center load on saddle: Ensure stable setup.
  • Do not move vehicle on jack: The jack is not designed for vehicle transport.
  • No risers/spacers/extenders: Do not use materials between the saddle and the load.
  • No unauthorized adaptors: Only use adaptors approved or supplied by the manufacturer.
  • No unauthorized modifications: Do not use or modify the product for purposes other than its design without consulting the manufacturer.
  • Lower slowly and carefully: Control the lowering process.
  • California Proposition 65 Warning: Notes that the product may expose users to chemicals like nickel, known to cause cancer and birth defects.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides detailed instructions for preventative maintenance to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the jack.

Regular Maintenance (Monthly or as necessary):

  • Lubrication: All linkages and pivot points, the handle receptacle, handle end, rear caster bearings, and front wheels must be lubricated with white lithium spray grease. This prevents premature wear of parts.
  • Cleaning: The jack should be stored in a well-protected area, away from inclement weather, corrosive vapors, abrasive dust, and other harmful elements. It must be cleaned of water, snow, sand, grit, oil, grease, or other foreign matter before use. External surfaces can be cleaned with a mild soap solution, avoiding moving hydraulic components.
  • Inspection: Before each use, the jack must be inspected for cracks, breaks, bends, signs of damage, hydraulic fluid leaks, loose or missing hardware, or unauthorized modifications. Any issues must be corrected before using the jack again.
  • Label Readability: The owner is responsible for keeping all jack labels clean and readable.

Troubleshooting:

A troubleshooting guide is included to address common operational issues:

  • Unit will not lift rated load: Purge air from the hydraulic system.
  • Unit will not sustain rated load or feels "spongy": Purge air from the hydraulic system.
  • Unit will not lift to full height: Purge air from the hydraulic system.
  • Unit will not lower completely: Check oil level and ensure the hydraulic system is not overfilled. Rapidly pump the handle several times to push oil past ball valves.
  • Handle tends to raise up while unit is under rated load: Purge air from the hydraulic system.
  • Unit still does not operate: Contact customer service.

The manual clarifies that a slight lowering of the load (within specific ASME-PASE Load Sustaining Test limits) is considered normal operation and not a warrantable defect.

Storage:

It is recommended to store the jack in a dry location with all wheels touching the ground on a relatively level surface.

Warranty:

The product comes with a ONE-YEAR limited warranty covering defects in workmanship and materials. It explicitly states that the warranty does not cover damage from alteration, abuse, misuse, or repairs made by unauthorized parties.
