13.2 File issues, corrupted data, formatting, and partitioning.
Problem: I want to clean up my Archos™ 104’s hard drive, but Windows
®
will not let me use the standard hard
drive cleaning tools.
Answer: This is because Windows
®
sees your Archos™ 104 as a Windows Device and not a hard drive (USB
Port is set to Windows Device in Setup > System ). Do not change back to hard drive and run a defragmenter
program. This will give unexpected results.
Problem: On the Archos™ 104, I nd new le names and folder names that I never created or they have strange
gibberish names.
Answer: (Hard Drive Mode) Most likely, the Archos™ 104’s File Allocation Table (FAT) has been corrupted.
This could have been due to a shut down while the Archos™ 104 was connected to your computer. To x a
corrupted FAT problem, you should use the Error Checking utility or the Check Disk utility explained at the end
of this section. Attention: Windows
®
and Macintosh
®
often write extra les to the hard drive such as nder.def or
System volume info . These are normal and will not harm the Archos™ 104.
Problem: Can I defragment the Archos™ 104’s hard drive?
Answer: (Windows Device Mode) The Archos™ 104 maintains an optimized le system and does not need to be
defragmented. Defragmenting will cause unexpected problems
Problem: I want to reformat the hard drive of the Archos™ 104.
Solution: You can do this, but it will erase ALL of the data on your Archos™ 104. First, as explained
above, you should run ScanDisk or the DOS chkdsk (Check Disk) program to try to x your problem.
These will solve your problems 99% of the time. Note that Windows
®
XP and 2000 will, by default,
format your Archos™ 104 hard drive in the NTFS le format. This will make the Archos™ 104 unusable.
Make sure you tell it to format the hard drive in FAT32 format .

ME Running Scan-Disk (Error Checking) - Hard Disk Mode only
Quit all running applications.
Properly connect the Archos™ 104 to your computer as explained in chapter 9.
Right click on the Archos™ 104 hard drive in Windows
®
Explorer and select Properties.
Select the Tools option and run the Error checking program.
Make sure you check the box to automatically x errors .
Be patient, this may take a while. Windows
®
may ask you to restart the computer to make certain Windows
®
les available. This is OK, click on Yes .

®
XP & 2000 Running Check Disk Utility (ChkDsk) - Hard Disk Mode only
If you still have problems with the le system on your Archos™ 104 you can try to x it using the DOS utility,
check disk (chkdsk). Simply running the Windows
®
program Error Checking may not completely x disk errors.
Do the following:
Quit all running applications.
Properly connect the Archos™ 104 to your computer as explained in chapter 9.
Wait patiently (up to 5 minutes) for Windows
®
XP to show the Archos™ 104 or local drive as mounted.
Using the Command Prompt utility program, open a DOS window.
Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt .
At the prompt, type chkdsk e: /f . Use e: or the drive letter representing your Archos™ 104.
Be patient, this may take a while.
When it is nished, exit the DOS Window and properly disconnect the Archos™ 104 from your computer.
