Overview

The Aspire Active Air Acute 8 is an electrically operated alternating mattress replacement system designed for the prevention and relief of pressure injuries in patients at high to very high risk. It is suitable for use in various environments, including home care, aged care, and hospitals, under the instruction of a carer or health professional.

Function Description

The primary function of the Aspire Active Air Acute 8 is to provide effective pressure redistribution and wound management through alternating therapy, while optimizing patient comfort. The system utilizes a pump with digital pressure adjustment, multiple mode selections, and audiovisual alarms to ensure optimal care. The mattress itself features 20 alternating air cells and 4 static head cells, all encased in a multi-stretch PU coated fabric cover with high MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) to reduce friction and shear, and optimize skin microclimate. A rapid release twist CPR valve is integrated for emergency situations, allowing for quick deflation.

The system incorporates several intelligent features to enhance patient safety and comfort. The AutoDetect function automatically sets the appropriate pressure output based on the patient's weight and size, ensuring optimal care. The AutoProtect feature automatically increases air pressure in the pelvic region when the head of the bed is raised (by +10mmHg at 25° or more, and +15mmHg at 45° or more) to prevent bottoming out, also known as the Fowler Function. The AutoLock function automatically locks the control panel after 30 seconds of inactivity to prevent accidental changes to modes and settings.

The turnassist function is a key feature designed to reduce the WHS (Work Health and Safety) impact on care workers by facilitating safe movement and repositioning of a user. This is achieved through integrated air cells that engage lateral turning, allowing the mattress to turn up to 40 degrees. The system also offers 24 Hour Transport capability, meaning patients can remain on the inflated surface for up to 24 hours in the event of a power failure.

Usage Features

The Aspire Active Air Acute 8 is designed for ease of use with an intuitive control panel and clear LCD screen. The pump offers various operating modes to cater to different patient needs and comfort levels.

Power On/Ready for Use: The system is activated by turning on the power switch on the side of the pump and then pressing the ON/OFF button on the control panel. The 'POWER' LED will illuminate, and the mattress will inflate to normal pressure within approximately 20 minutes.

Auto Firm: This feature allows the mattress to inflate to maximum pressure automatically, which is particularly useful for patient ingress, egress, and meal times. It can also be used to fully inflate the mattress. Once activated, the 'AUTO FIRM' LED will flash and then illuminate steadily when maximum pressure is reached. After 20 minutes, the pump automatically reverts to the previously selected mode and comfort level.

Pressure Mode Adjustment:

  • Static Mode: This mode stops the mattress from alternating and maintains a set pressure level for 20 minutes before automatically returning to the previously selected alternating mode. It is activated by pressing the 'MODE' button until the 'STATIC' LED light is illuminated. This function only works when "Auto Firm" is off.
  • Alternating Mode: This is the default mode where mattress cells alternate at specified time intervals. It is activated by pressing the 'MODE' button until the 'ALTERNATING' LED light is illuminated. Users can toggle between cycle times of 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 minutes by pressing the 'Cycle' button, with the selected time displayed on the LCD screen.
  • Constant Low Pressure (CLP) Mode: This mode provides an immersion low-pressure surface, operating between 15mmHg and 29mmHg, depending on the chosen comfort settings. It is activated by pressing the 'MODE' button until the 'CLP' LED light is illuminated.

Comfort (Pressure) Adjustment: The pressure level can be manually adjusted to increase or decrease comfort by pressing the 'FIRM' or 'SOFT' buttons, respectively. The system also includes an Auto Adjust feature, which automatically sets correct pressure levels based on patient weight. For patients with unusual body shapes, manual adjustment may be required.

Mute Function: An alarm mute button is available to temporarily silence any alarms from the pump. However, if the issue is not resolved, the mute function will automatically disable, and the alarm will reactivate as a safety measure.

General Operation (CPR): In an emergency, the rapid release CPR valve, located at the head end of the bed, can be opened by pulling and twisting the cylinder to the RIGHT to quickly deflate the mattress. The pump hose should also be disconnected from the pump.

turnassist: This function is initiated by pressing the 'Auto Firm' button on the pump, then pulling and twisting the yellow valve on the desired side of the bed. The patient will begin to turn laterally in the chosen direction. The turning process takes between 30 seconds to 1 minute, depending on patient weight. Patients are encouraged to hold onto the side rail if fitted to the bed. After repositioning, the turnassist valve should be closed to return the mattress to a flat position.

Maintenance Features

The Aspire Active Air Acute 8 is designed for easy maintenance and cleaning to ensure longevity and adherence to infection control protocols.

Cleaning:

  • Pump: The pump should be wiped with a damp cloth pre-soaked with a mild detergent and kept free of dust. It must never be immersed or soaked in water.
  • Mattress Cover: Small spills or stains can be wiped with a damp cloth pre-soaked with a mild detergent or single-use disinfectant wipe. For larger spills or stains, the top cover can be completely removed by unzipping all four sides. It can be prewashed and main washed at up to 95°C for 15 minutes each. The cover should be dried by hanging on a line/air dryer or on a low heat setting (tumble dried for up to 90 minutes) before reattaching. Phenol-based products should not be used, and the cover should not be dried in direct sunlight.

Fuse Replacement: In case of a blown fuse, the mains power should be disconnected. The cover on the side casing of the pump can be removed to access and replace the fuse. Only fuses supplied by an Aspire Dealer with the correct rating and specification should be used.

Air Filter Replacement: The air filter is located on the rear casing of the pump. The cover can be removed to replace the old filter with a new one. If the filter does not require replacement, it can be gently washed with a mild detergent and warm water, ensuring it is dry before reinstallation.

Storage: To store the mattress, all air should be released by opening the CPR valve and disconnecting the mattress hose from the pump. The mattress should then be laid flat and rolled from the head end towards the foot end. Mattress straps can be tightened into clamps to prevent unrolling, and a packing strap can be stretched around the rolled mattress for secure storage.

Troubleshooting: The device includes an intuitive troubleshooting sticker on the base of the pump casing for quick reference to common issues such as pump not connecting, low pressure, power failure, or noisy operation. For persistent issues or service requirements, users are directed to contact their Aspire dealer or Aidacare Customer Service. The modular pump design also ensures hassle-free maintenance, allowing pumps to be serviced and returned to use quickly, minimizing downtime.
