Overview

This document describes the ATAGO PAL-10S Digital Hand-held "Pocket" Urine specific gravity Refractometer, model number 4410-E17.

Function Description

The PAL-10S is a compact, digital refractometer designed for measuring urine specific gravity. It features automatic temperature compensation (ATC) to ensure accurate readings regardless of prism temperature fluctuations. The device is equipped with an LCD that displays measurement results, prism temperature, and remaining battery charge. It has a START button (also serving as a power button) for taking measurements and turning the device on/off, and a ZERO button for zero-setting. The device also includes a lanyard hole for portability.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Measurement Range: Urine S.G. 1.0000 to 1.0600, and temperature 10.0 to 35.0°C.
  • Resolution: 0.0001 for Urine S.G. and 0.1°C for temperature.
  • Accuracy: ±0.001 for Urine S.G. and ±1°C for temperature.
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation Range: 10 to 35°C.
  • Ambient Temperature Range: 10 to 35°C.
  • Sample Volume: At least 0.3mL.
  • Measurement Time: Approximately 3 seconds.
  • Backlight: Stays on for 30 seconds after any button is pressed.
  • Data History: Stores a maximum of 100 data history entries.
  • Output: NFC Forum Type 4 Tag, ISO/IEC 14443 Type A. Output category includes Date Time, Urine S.G., and Temperature.
  • Power Supply: Two (2) AAA alkaline batteries.
  • Battery Life: Approximately 11,000 measurements (when using alkaline batteries).
  • International Protection Class: IP65 (water-resistant, not waterproof).
  • Dimensions and Weight: 55 (W) x 31 (D) x 109 (H)mm, 100g (main unit only).
  • Body Case Material: Resin (chemical resistance is limited; avoid water vapor and some solvents).

Usage Features

  • Zero-setting: This should be performed at the beginning of each day and after replacing batteries. Apply about 0.3mL of tap water to the prism, wait for it to acclimate to the instrument's temperature, then press the ZERO button. A "000" blinking twice indicates successful zero-setting. If "AAA" is displayed, clean the prism, apply water, and press ZERO again.
  • Measurement: After zero-setting, wipe the prism clean. Apply about 0.3mL of the sample to the prism. Press the START button. The measurement and prism temperature will be displayed. For hot or cold samples, wait approximately 20 seconds for the instrument to acclimate, or press the START button multiple times until stable readings are obtained. Avoid using metal tools on the prism.
  • LCD Auto Shut-off: The instrument automatically turns off after 2 minutes of inactivity. To manually turn it off, hold down the START button for more than 2 seconds.
  • Oily/Fatty Samples: For these types of samples, stirring the sample on the prism while measuring can improve repeatability.
  • Error Messages: The LCD displays various messages to indicate operational issues:
    • "Lo": Battery is low.
    • "LLLC" (below temperature): Prism temperature is below range.
    • "AAA": ZERO button pressed with nothing or something other than water on the prism.
    • "LLLC" (above temperature): Prism temperature is above range.
    • "LLL": START button pressed with nothing or insufficient sample.
    • "HHH": Sample measured outside the measurement range.
    • "EEE": Instrument is faulty (replace batteries; contact ATAGO if error persists).
    • "Too much light": If too much light enters the prism, shade the sample stage with your hand and re-measure.
  • Warranty: The standard warranty period is one year from the date of purchase. This can be extended to two years by registering customer information. Warranty is void if the instrument shows signs of unauthorized disassembly, misuse, operation outside environmental specifications, damage to the prism/sample stage, water damage, dropping, or leakage from non-included batteries.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: After use, wipe off the sample. Clean the prism and sample stage with a mild soap and thoroughly rinse with water, then dry with tissues. Do not scratch the prism.
  • Battery Replacement: When the battery icon indicates low power, replace both AAA alkaline batteries (1.5V) with new ones. To replace, insert a coin into the groove of the battery compartment cover, turn counterclockwise to remove. Insert batteries observing correct polarity, align the cover, push it down, and turn clockwise until it stops. Ensure the cover is fastened tightly to prevent water ingress. The O-ring on the cover should be clean and undamaged to maintain water resistance. Zero-set the instrument after battery replacement.
  • Storage: Store the instrument in a dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive dust/debris. Clean and dry the sample stage thoroughly. Store at a stable temperature with minimal fluctuations. Avoid rapid changes in ambient temperature, strong vibration, extreme cold, or placing heavy objects on the instrument. Loosen the battery compartment cover for air transportation.
  • Temperature Compensation: Readings are corrected based on prism temperature within the automatic temperature compensation range. Allow approximately 20 seconds for the instrument to acclimate to the sample temperature before pressing START, especially with hot or cold samples.
