Tempest™
G.
Game Operation
With this
manual
you received
three large
sheets
that
contain the wiring
and schematic
diagrams
for
the Tempest™
game.
Sheet
1,
Side A,
includes
infor-
mation
that shows
the arrangement
of
these dia-
grams.
These
diagrams explain
the
functions of
the
circuits and
define inputs
and
outputs.
In
addition,
you
received
the
Tempest
Trouble-
shooting Guide,
which includes
information
on
sig-
nature
analysis, CAT
Box tests and
the
memory map.
Atari’s
Tempest is
a
microprocessor-controlled
game. The microprocessor
is
contained
on
the
game PCB. The
game PCB
receives
switch
inputs
from
the control
panel and coin
door. These
inputs
are
processed
by the
game PCBs
and
output
to the
monitor,
Regulator/Audio
II
PCB,
and
control
panel.
The color
X-Y
monitor
receives
signals
for
the X
and Y axes
and
three
color intensity
signals
(red,
green
and
blue). Since
the
location
of
the beam
in
the
monitor is
controlled
by the X-
and
Y-axis
out-
puts of
the game PCB,
the game PCB
does not
con-
tain
a standard
sync
circuit. The
X-and
Y-axis
inputs
to the monitor
step in
increments
of
approximately
760
steps for
the X
(horizontal)
axis,
and
approx-
imately
1000
steps for
the Y (vertical)
axis.
The
three
intensity
signals
control
the
brightness
of the
three
electron
guns (red,
green
and blue).
