78 On th e road
- You can apply the parking brake at any
time - even w ith the ignition swit ched
off . The ignit ion must be on and the
brake pedal must be pressed in order to
release the parking brake.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are norma l
and are not a cause for concern .
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at
regular intervals. Any associated noises
are normal.
Parking
Press the brake pedal to stop the vehicle .
Pull t he swit ch(®) t o set t he parking brake.
Move the selecto r lever to P.
Turn the engine off ~ &, .
"' When on incl ines or declines, turn the steer-
ing wheel so that your vehicle will roll into
the curb if it begins to move.
A WARNING
- When you leave your vehicle - even if on-
ly briefly - always take the ignition key
with you. This applies partic ularly when
children remain in the vehicle. Otherw ise
t he child ren could start t he engine, re-
lease the parking brake or operate elec-
t rical equipment (e.g. power windows).
There is the risk of an accident .
- When the vehicle is locked, no one - par-
t icularly not children should remain in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in-
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
star ting.
Stopping and applying parking brake
"' Pull t he switch(®) to apply the parking
brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
"' When you start to drive as usual, the park-
ing brake is automat ically released and your
vehicle begins t o move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping
in city t raffic, the parking brake can be ap-
plied . The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbra ke. The parking brake elimi-
nates the tende ncy to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged . As soon as you drive off as usual,
the parking brake is released automatically
and the vehicle st arts to move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines , t he star t ing assist
prevents the vehicle from unintent ionally roll -
ing back. The braking force of the parki ng
brake is not released unti l suff icient driving
fo rce has been built up at the w heels.
(D Tips
For safet y reasons, the parking brake is re-
leased automatically only when t he driv-
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
"' Keep the switch(®) pulled and depress the
accelerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicl e from roll ing back-
ward.
"' You can release t he swit ch(®) once you are
sure t hat you are developing enoug h for -
ward momentum at the wheels as you de-
press the accelerator .
Depending on t he weight of the rig (vehicle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, you
may roll backwards as you start . You can pre-
vent rolling backwards by holding the park ing
brake switch ) pulled out and accelerating -
just as you would when starting on a hill with
a conventiona l hand brake.
