Safety rules for chainsaws
Your Clothing
Wear close-fitting and protective clothing, including safety
helmet, goggles, safety shoes and gloves
We recommend strong gardening gloves and rubber footwear
for outdoor use
Your W ork Area
Don't use your chainsaw in damp or wet conditions
Keep children and all other onlookers at a safe distance from
your work area, or where you are felling a tree
Your Work
Use clamps or chocks to hold your work
Use wedges to help control felling, and to prevent trapping the
saw chain and guide bar in the cut See the page on 'How to use
your chainsaw for details
Your Chainsaw
Keep your chainsaw clean with a dry cloth - dont use any
solvents, or cleaning fluids.
Dont allow dirt, oil or sawdust to build up on your
chainsaw
Make sure that the air inlet and outlet slots remain clear at all
times - they must not become clogged
Keep the chain sharp and make sure that both the chain and its
guide bar are clean and well oiled. The chain must lit snugly
on the guide bar
Do not use a chainsaw which is damaged, not properly
adjusted, or not completely and securely assembled
Your Position
Be sure of youi footing and balance at all times
Do not over-reach
Pre-plan a safe exit from a falling tree or branches See the
page on 'How to use your chainsaw for details.
Be specially careful when using your chainsaw in a kneeling
position
Do not try to operate your chainsaw while in a tree or on
a ladder 01 on any other unstable surface.
These positions are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
Making Your Cut
Make sure the chain is not touching anything before you
switch on
Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands when the motor is
running, use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the
handles
Keep all parts of your body and clothing away from the chain
when it is running
Watch carefully what you cut
BEWARE OF KICKBACK!
Kickback is when the chainsaw jerks upwards or backwards
It can be caused by
hitting branches or other objects accidentally with the lip ot
the saw while the chain is moving;
- hitting metal, cement, or other hard materials near the wood,
or buried in the wood;
- a blunt or loose chain,
- cutting above shoulder height,
- lack of attention to holding or guiding the saw while cutting;
- overnalancing
Be very careful when cutting small size brush and saplings
because thin material may be caught in the chain and be
whipped towards you, or pull you off balance
Be alert for spring-back when cutting a branch under tension,
so that you will not be struck when the tension is released
Switching Off
Always rem em ber that the chain will continue
to run for a short time after the saw has
been switched oft.
Release the trigger-switch and wait for the chain to stop before
you put the saw down
Don't touch or try to stop the moving chain with your hand
Plug and Cable
Remove the plug from the mains before
- moving to work in a different place;
- adjusting the saw,
- cleaning the saw;
- if the cord gets tangled or damaged
Never jerk the cable to disconnect the plug from the socket
Dont abuse the cable, and check it frequently for damage
Keep the cable away from heat, oil, and sharp edges
Carrying and Storage
Carry your chainsaw with the mams supply disconnected
Carry your saw by the front handle with the chain pointing ;
behind you
Never carry your saw by the cable.
Store all parts of your chainsaw in a dry, secure place out ot
reach of children
If you're not going to use your saw foi some time, remove the,
chain and guide bar and keep them immersed in chain oil.
Safety features
Black & Decker has designed into your chainsaw the following
additional safety features
1 A LOCK OFF SWITCH to prevent accidental operation
2 A FLANGE AROUND THE SWITCH HANDLE to guard against
the unlikely occurrence of a broken chain
3 A FRONT HAND GUARD to protect your hand in the event of
kickback or branches springing back into the chain saw
4 A CHAIN CATCHER situated on the under part of the side frame
which is intended to reduce the possibility of a broken chain
being thrown out of the machine
5 A SHORT CABLE AND PLUG to allow quick and easy isolation
from the mains supply
Do not use your chainsaw if any of these features
become loose, damaged, or are missing
